Tolkien fans. Any change whatsoever from the original texts is apocalyptic, even though, if movies were made that were completely true to the books, they would consist of 25% singing, 15% eating, 75% panning over scenery while someone narrates, and 10% action.

I am a huge Tolkien fan(I have read The Silmarillion seven times), but I realize that things need to be edited or changed when translating something into a new medium. A lot of things that work in books just don't translate well into other mediums.

That said, ELVES AT HELM'S DEEP WHAT THE HELL

Any fanbase because it's nearly impossible to create something that everyone will enjoy.

Humans vs Zombies players on a large campus... I'm part of the moderator team now, and even though we've gone to extreme lengths to prepare and communicate for the last few months and during the game itself, dozens of players are still accusing us on the forums of wanting one side to lose, being inconsistent, and being douchebags. It's literally 1000 times better than the last game (which had a mostly different mod team) and we try to reason with players to ridiculous extents, but it's still impossible to avoid mass trolling and QQing.
If anyone knows the game I'm talking about then you're probably a player, please calm the hell down and just enjoy the game.

Sonic
"They changed his eye colour and/or running speed slightly! It's ruined"

Dragon Age
"They made it easy for those damn casual gamers. It's ruined"

Halo
"They changed some part of the story nobody gives a shit about anyway that isn't even in the games. It's ruined"

Final Fantasy
"Changing the gameplay? It's ruined"

Doctor Who
"X episode is shit because of some tiny detail from a 30 year old episode. It's ruined"

Star Trek
"Why do the Klingons look different since the original series? It's ruined"

Firefly

Resident Evil

I do not know how Duke Nukem can possible impress its fans enough to justify the 10 year delay. I mean, nothing short of this game elevating games to a recognized artistic medium, its writers earning noble prizes in literature, while it still is as violent and agressive and non-cover based shooter as possible, all the while keeping true to the previous installments.

It will still be good, but it will inevitably fall short
That's the thing. If you don't expect too much of something, especially Duke, then there is very little bitching and complaints. But there's always those people that expect the world and throw a ***** fit when their perfect vision isn't met EXACTLY.

Considering I have heard many Sonic fans defend Sonic 06 into the ground, I have to disagree.
The sonic fanbase is also has one of the worst broken bases [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/BrokenBase] So they jjust can't be pleased as one side will praise any game, and another will trash it saying it isn't what they wanted.

Sonic the Hedgehog is a great example of a terrible fanbase.

"We want a Sonic game about SPEED!"
Sonic Unleashed comes out.
"No we want a CLASSIC Sonic game!"
Sonic 4 comes out.
"No! Sonic isn't supposed to have GREEN EYES! WHY ARE THEY USING THE MODERN DESIGN!?! AAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!"
"WE WANT NEW VOICE ACTORS!!!"
Sonic Colors comes out with professional voice actors who've been in the business for years. Some for decades.
"NO WE HATE THEM!!! BRING BACK THE OLDER CAST!!! I'M LEAVING THE FANBASE FOR FIVE MINUTES! BE BACK IN A FEW!!!"

The sad thing is that SEGA is really trying to please the fans but they are never satisfied with anything they say. My interest in Sonic declined with Sonic Adventure 2 where I returned it to the store and said to the clerk, "Sorry I asked for Sonic Adventure 2 I got 'Tail's and Knuckles' Stupid Adventure" Sorry I just really am annoyed with that fanbase. Search up that video on Youtube where they show off the new voice cast and half the comments are people complaining about it.
This is a good example of what I'm talking about, except the sonic adventure 2 part. I liked that game.

Every fanbase.
Even keeping the game exactly the same is going to piss off a section of the fanbase.

A lot of fans are self entitled, whiney bitches, and are only ever satisfied if a sequal ends up being exactly like it's predecessor. Just looks at the whole DA2 mess.

The game is more streamlined.

"Nuhuh! It's dumbed down for the console tards!"

Character archetypes are not as important, so it's not as necessary to always have a 2 mage 1 tank set up, the same level of tactics is still required at higher levels.

"Nuhuh! It's just easier!"

The dialogue wheel streamlines conversation, making a more fun engaging conversation system.

"WAAAAAAAAAAAAH! DRAGON EFFECT 2! WAAAAAAAAH!"

I could do this all day...
Agreed, except for the fact that if it is exactly like the predecessor, they'll complain it's too similar and just a cash-in.

Pokemon...many people are not happy with the current gen, i personally love it.

COD is another one...but to be fair it is the Devs fault... (looks over at Activision with an evil look)
It's been my experience that most of the bitching to be found for a Pokemon game actually comes from the people who don't actually play the games to begin with.

To be fair, have you PLAYED a sonic game lately?
As a matter of fact I have, both Sonic 4 episode 1 and Sonic colours, both seem like perfectly fine games to me.
Heh, touche. I was mostly referring to sonic 06 and unleashed though, which is the ones most people complain about and completely deserve it. Ironically enough I'm the one who hasn't played 4 ep 1 or colours. :p I stopped playing after the travesty that was (sonic) unleashed.

(I actually like '06 though, despite all it's faults, but i'm just weird)

All of them.

Everyone wants a game made to their standards. Everyone doesn't get a game to their standards. People ***** about it on the Interwebz, the circle of life and all.

Every large group of people.

You can't really expect a big group to have consensus on a topic that is mostly based on personal taste.

The Elder Scrolls fanbase have had a history of begging for something (in case of Morrowind, unique hand-made content), have it delivered, only to complain that its not the same as the previous game which they complained about.

After Morrowind, everyone wanted a "not-broken-as-fuck" combat system and a magic system that actually worked, plus UI that didn't suck stilt. In oblivion, they delivered on that, giving a game that was actually playable, BUT OH NO! its no longer Morrowind! its no longer broken as fuuuuuck and has a decent combat system!

The same thing will probably happen when Skyrim gets here, people will ***** and moan, just as always.

Superman has no faults, consequently he's uninteresting.
I think thou hast not read All-Star Superman vol. 1 and 2 (by Grant Morrison) or For the Man who has it All (by Alan Moore).
Which is pretty pointless seeing as how you can just download a mod to fix whatever you don't like.

Hey, can I say something for being a player of Duke Nukem games? I really don't care about the wait. It's not something that I've been waking up every morning to see if it's ready yet or not. There isn't a statute of limitations here. When it comes, I'll buy it. Until then, I've got a whole mess of things to kill in some other game.

OT: Now then... Impossible fanbase? Three words: No Mutants Allowed. I've heard stories. They're not pleasant. Kinda' sad to a Fallout vet like me.

Superman fans are impossible to please. Everyone has their own very unique interpretation of who or what Superman is and means.
I'd say he's the easiest to figure out in that respect. The conundrum, if one existed for the character, is if he is still relevant in today's world.

GTA. With GTAIV they released the most culturally significant game yet created. And yet people complained about all sorts of things that are either completely unfair or are even more valid towards every other game. You never seeing people criticise nintendo or valve games for being shallow and gimmicky (gimmick isn't an insult before you get mad, it's just clear valve games have gimmicks like gravity gun, portal gun, zombie AI director). It's sending out a horrible message. Don't try to create a deep meaningful game because people will spend all their time trying to pick flaws in it. Instead create a game with next to no narrative or character development, and a fun gameplay gimmick, and pretentious simpletons will rave about how perfect it is with it's minamlistic approach. They're the equivalent of silent movies, and the fans are like Charlie Chaplin, moaning that "[talkies] are defeating the meaning of the screen.".

I've never seen as much hate towards a good game as with GTAIV. It's mind boggling to me that people could possibly think saints row or just cause 2 etc. are better. If they're more to your taste, that's fine. But it'd be like saying that Citizen Kane sucks and transformers revenge of the fallen is awesome. You come across as a moron. Considering the game cost $100m already, the complaints it didn't have plane travel or a big enough map are just facepalm enducing. It was a deliberate artistic choice to set it in new york, to make it more serious and to have meaningful themes. Yes this means Nico hypocritically complains about killing people or that you can't run gangs and buy properties. But those are unavoidable.

If you want to cry that GTAIV didn't let you do much with your money, please tell what other game does? Did mass effect let you buy houses? Did fallout? Most games don't give you much to spend money on. The game was deliberately more serious because of the new engine and to try something different and fresh. It was an unbelievable success and should have been the most important game ever, that ushered in a new generation of culturally significant games and for the industry to mature and produce more ambitious and deep experiences. Instead there's a huge backlash and people just want to play shallow mindless fun comic book games. Instead we've got intellectually vapid trash like Minecraft, Angry Birds and Farmville wasting the spare time of a generation. It's one of my biggest worries that GTAV will take a different direction to try and appease the asshole fans who want to destroy the series. It happened with Final Fantasy. After XII which was a great game with some flaws, the fans moaned until they created the horrendously awful XIII which completely destroyed everything redeemable about the series.

EverQuest players. That is all.

Read their forums sometime, it's an enlightening experience. Because the SOE Devs, just like an Englishman at a tennis tournament, just can't win.
