What sequel or expansion pack do you believe made a change for the best in a series. This can range anywhere (but not limited to) being able to run in pokemon, streamlined interfaces, and better questing in WOW.

Assassin's Creed -> Assassin's Creed 2.

Hands-down.

It improved on everything: the pace of the game, the story, the characters, the combat, the running, the flow of the game, the graphics, the music.

AC1 was pretty much them taking a brand-new idea and testing it out. It worked, so they took that idea and made it better in every way, and that's why AC2 is my second-favourite game of all time.

Team Fortress to Team Fortress 2. The original was a good enough game, but it was bland, boring and lacked any kind of style. Team Fortress 2, on the other hand, has style and panache for days.

I was going to say Assassin's Creed 2, but that has been taken.

I think Gears of War 2 was a huge improvement over the first.

Fallout New Vegas.
It's the same treatment with fallout 1 --> fallout 2, barely any graphics changed but the tone, atmosphere, controls and gameplay have changed considerably.

Left 4 dead 2 [hahahaha no]

Ask this again when Skyrim comes out and you'll have your answer, but currently I'm gonna say that Mount and blade Warband greatly improved the original.

Took the words right out of my mouth, though i was going to focus more on Fallout 1 --> Fallout 2. I actually liked the atmosphere and story slightly better in 1 than 2, but the gameplay was so thoroughly improved in 2 that it more than made up for its very slight deficiencies in the atmosphere department.

I felt that way at one point. But the more i play 2, the more i can't imagine playing L4D without Ellis. That damn redneck is just too damn hilarious. His stories more than make up for the balance problems of 2.

Uncharted -> Uncharted 2.

The first one bored me out of my mind. It was a stock-standard cover based shooter (CBS?) with stock-standard weapons and only two enemy types (man with gun, crawling zombie). Oh, and there were 100% linear platforming sections. Yay.

Second one was much better. More enemies, slightly more varied weapons, waaaay better level design, less linear platforming.

The story, characters and dialogue can still all go jump off a damn cliff though.

Age of Empires 2: The Conquerors Expansion. A glorious, shining example of an expansion, and pushed the series wayyy forward.

AAAND then Microsoft killed Ensemble.

FIFA 10 ---> FIFA 11

The improved goalkeepers, the improved 11v11 online pro clubs, the improved passing and so much more. Hopefully FIFA 12 can up the game even more!

StarCraft < Brood War
I was going to say this. It also applies to the StarCraft boardgame.

Other than that, I think King's Quest 3 was a big improvement over the first two. The graphics were much better (no more yellow people), there were more objects to interact with and the spellcasting, while being kind of a pain because you had to do it exactly as described in the manual or you'd die, was still really interesting.

People argue that Halo 3: ODST wasn't worth the full game price, and that it was nothing more than an expansion, but I personally enjoy it more than Halo 3. The fact is, it used a similar gameplay style to the main series in the linear levels, while adding a stealthy, open-world approach as The Rookie, which was a great balance and melding of gameplay styles. The time of the game wasn't anywhere near as short as people claimed as well, and the multiplayer map packs for Halo 3 were more than acceptable to help build up the worth of the pack. Overall, one of my favourite Halo games, from a series that I feel was already amazing anyway before ODST came along...

Baldur's Gate 2

First game sucked. Combat is completely frustrating, cheap tactics rule supreme, the story is pretty weak (avenge my murdered father? Like I give a shit, I've known him for three lines of dialogue) and the supporting characters are underdeveloped. There are a lot of them, but they only get like a paragraph or two when you recruit them, they have very limited banter and that's it.

Baldur's Gate 2 fixed pretty much everything wrong with the first game. Most importantly it gave the supporting characters a much bigger part, with more inter-party banter and comments about current quests. Most even get their own story arcs and side quests. Combat was better too - your characters were all higher levels so you didn't die every time you entered melee range, and more spells allowed for a much greater variety of tactics, none of which were as cheap as the first game. Also, the story was way better aswell.
