My Media teacher taught us about the Hillsborough Disaster, using the Sun and the police reports as the major sources.
For those who don't know, the Hillsborough Disaster happened when Liverpool played Notts Forest a while ago, there were too many people in the stadium and more outside trying to get in. The police were told to allow the people outside to come in, creating a crushing effect in one of the "pens" (high-walled fences stopping the fans getting onto the pitch), and when they tried to climb the fence to get out, they where beaten down by coppers. The Sun reported a police-skewed version of it, suggesting that it was entirely the fans fault. 97 Liverpool fans died that day, and the police chief has since been prosecuted for gross negligence. I called my teacher out on this, because the way that she told it the Liverpool fans were a bunch of animals who were the sole cause of the disaster. My mum would have been a 17 year old girl in those stalls, but she had her ticket nicked whilst she was on the train down there.
