Let me explain. I was sitting in my home today playing Guitar Hero 5, and I had to play "Do You Feel Like We Do?" by Peter Frampton. I went in, completely unaware that the song is approximately 14 minutes long. So I'm playing the song, and it's going well.

Until I reached the outro.

The game then decided to throw a ridiculous amount of notes at me, and before I know it, I had failed. Now here's where the story gets good. As I was alleviating my anger on a nearby pillow, I heard a noise and looked up at the screen. I had received the achievement, "Did You Finish the Way We Did?", a secret achievement awarded to people who fail in the last 5% of the song, just to rub it in our faces a little harder.

So Escapists, have there been any achievements in your lives that invoke anger? Tears? Ensuing nightmares?

I'm not even sure if there's an achievement for it, but trying to get every star in Braid is sure to evoke some nightmares and suicide attempts with mouse cords.

This. How could anyone possibly have the patience to find all those flags without a guide? Even if you did have a guide, it would still take forever.

Killing yourself 5 times in F.E.A.R. It ticked me off that they were mocking me for being my own worst enemy, and I was playing it at my friend's house so when he saw it he kept making fun of me about it for the rest of the day. And it gives you 0 gamerscore too! That was the worst part.

i wouldnt say they infuriate me but those achievements that are for opening a bank, making a character, selling an item (i.e the "starter" achievements). They always seem like a big condescending "pat on the head"

I have two.

ANY Achievement that is worth 0G. Thanks developer, I'd like to use bragging rights with NO weight to them.

And the Orb Collections Achievements in Crackdown, which I bet will be there again in Crackdown 2.

Well I found all the ones in Masyaf without a guide but I can't be arsed trying to find the flags in all the other places. Masyaf was quite frustrating enough, thank you.

Long before achievements, long before the Internet exploded, when dinosaurs roamed the Earth and everything was in black-and-white, there was Goldeneye for the N64. In order to unlock cheats, you had to complete certain levels while fulfilling a time requirement. The best one, Invincibility, required you to finish the Facility level on 00 Agent mode (the hardest difficulty level) within 2:05.

What made this so difficult? The level required you to find a certain NPC named Dr. Doak, and of the five places he could randomly spawn, all but one were so far from the exit that you would have no chance of making it out under the time limit. If he didn't happen to spawn in that lucky spot, you could basically forget about unlocking the cheat, no matter how well you ran through the level.

For some reason, I'm having a really hard time getting "Flawless Freeflow Fighter" in Batman: Arkham Asylum. You have to complete a combat challenge map without taking damage. It doesn't sound all that tough, but since I'm also in need of "Freeflow Combo 40", I have a bad habit of trying to finish combat challenge maps with one giant combo.

Inevitably, I mess up and lose my shot at both achievements. Frustrating.

Beating WaW in veteran mode. It would be easy if it weren't for the insanely-cheap-no-fuse-insta-kill grenades *EVERY* enemy throws at you.

But I digress.

Hacking 50 terminals in Fallout 3. It wouldn't be nearly so hard if I didn't have to get a frakkin' pen and paper out just to work out the arcane formulas that you need to work out just to get the terminal hacked. And you have to do this fifty times!

Brass Balls in Bioshock. Forget about the fact that you have to beat the game on Hard mode- I've done it before and it's doable, even if you save all the Little Sisters, which is what I did on that playthrough- but the fact that you cannot ever use ANY vita-chambers, EVER, makes it quite challenging.

Beating the bonus mission in Call of Duty 4 on Veteran. Seriously, just don't even try.

And finally, killing General RAAM in the original Gears of War on any difficulty other than Easy should be an achievement in and of itself. Unfortunately, you have to beat him on HARDCORE difficulty to get the achievement I'm thinking of, not even counting the achievement(s) you get for beating the whole game.

As far as straight-up achievement difficulty goes, nothing begins to compare to Japanese shmups. "Clear the game without continuing" achievement is a given, and then you have the *really* hard ones...

Vidmaster: Annual in Halo 3 was pretty bad; 2 of the three other guys i was playing with were drunk off their asses, and the other couldn't drive a Ghost to save his life. And it doesn't help that they auto-steer toward hostile targets. Of which there are a billion. And the mission is timed. And the ground is falling from underneath your feet the whole way. And if anyone dies, you get to START OVER.

It wasn't that bad.
what's worse is getting him there in PS3 version, there's no reward, not one measly trophy.

I didn't know this and did it anyway.

BUT AAAAAAAAAAANNNNNNNNYWAY, I'm going with pretty much any achievement in Sonic the Hedgehog... er... something or other... ya know, the one with the "were hog" in it.
Because you'll want to quit.
