Out of the countless games I'm sure you have played, which one boasted the most unbearably stupid or unintentionally hilarious freindly AI behavior?

Right now I'm playing Dead Rising 2, and the survivors you escort back to the safehouse are amazingly thick, getting stuck and doing circles on bits of scenery, unable to think for themselves that instead of repelling the endless flesh ocean of zombies away with feeble girly slaps they should pick up the f*cking sledgehammer thats lying right next to them and wail away. But no, you have to get directly infront of them and hand it to them yourself.

Anyway, thats just my most recent aggrivating experience. What are yours? Squad mates strafing infront of your crosshairs? Having to rely on an AI controlled character to perform a certain action that just doesent want to happen? Have a gripe!

I'm just going to point out that Capcom is not known for intelligent friendly AI. Not that I didn't like RE5 or anything.

but back to topic:

Fallout 3. The moment I lose sight of them. [xxxx has died]

That stupid *****... she made the long fight on the elevator an absolute nightmare.

Skip to 5.20: that's when the player starts to get pissed off :D

I think Left 4 Dead is a strong candidate. On any other difficulty than expert, the bots could still be tolerated and sometimes even useful. But when you hit expert, they just tend to get themselves incapacitated and consume every bit of found equipment in a nanosecond. Also they are quite fond of healing themselves when there's really no need to (i.e. when they have about half of their health bar left).

But then again Resident Evil 5 may just win this one. For obvious reasons.
me and my friend play left for dead 2 regularly, and have decided that we would rather auto-shotty the bots to death then let them use that health pack that we don't even need XD..its just the gesture that gives us bloodlust. Rochelle in particular seems to just vacuum those fuckin things down.

And stupid bots are one thing, but theres alot of stupid players out there too, and they assume that since the bots heal at 60% health with zero downs, that's what they should do too XD. True story, we gunned a guy playing rochelle down once for healing at like 70%, (I know right?) and then started unloading on his body until we suddenly noticed that the bot was cussing us out over game chat <.<..

The rebels from Half-Life 2. They can move just as fast as you as far as I know, but as soon as you enter a narrow hallway and have to exit it the same way, it takes them a half hour to actually get out of your way so you can save the world, or dick around, or whatever it is Gordon Freeman does in his spare time these days. I like to think it involves Lego.

Vanilla WoW escorts were bad before they changed the AI. Often they'd take stupidly long routes (meaning if you failed at the end you'd have to wait for the respawn and then spend aaages following a slow NPC) and engage endless numbers of mobs before either one or both of you died.

Fortunately they made some changes to the AI so that escorts will actually stop if an enemy engages you, and not go on the hunt for more enemies. Also the newer escorts tend to have more abilities to fight and heal so you don't end up escorting a person who's as deadly and strong as a piece of paper.

At least they couldn't kill you directly I suppose :p

Terminator salvation looking back I have no idea why I played it other than to shut my friend up. The AI does nothing absolutely nothing.

'Come on ***** get in the car!'
'Fuck!'
'5 minutes later Kat gets in Warthog, gets out again and stands next to it.

Fable II. Dear lord Fable II.

Oh hey looks like a cutscene. I'll just sit back, relax and OH COME ON, YOU CAN'T EVEN WALK A STRAIGHT LINE THROUGH A DOOR?! COME ON, I WANNA START THIS CUT SCENE ALREADY!

Seriously. What is it with Fable II NPC's and doorways? Do they all have some sort on instinctual fear of doorways? Did a door kill their parents? COME ON!

I gotta say, Emile and Jun from Halo: Reach. The former spent the whole time using a shotgun at long range, and the latter always ran into enemy bases with a sniper rifle, then proceeded to NOT SHOOT at anything, despite the usual small army blasting his chattering ass.

Though a big runner up was the friendlies from Mass Effect 1. I can't count the amount of times Wrex ran his fat ass in front of me when I'm shooting at the enemy, only to move aside when the big missiles come in, hitting me instead. I thank whichever deities involved for fixing that in ME2

The guerrillas in Haze when you switch sides about 1/4 of the way through the game. Those idiots will not shut up! All they do is yell things like "Promesa!" and "Vaya con dios!". Not only that, but they are horrible shots and horrible drivers. Aye. I can still hear those assholes shouting the same phrases in my dreams.

I think most if not all friendly A.I is bad. I think it's something we haven't quite got a grasp of as of yet. I can't really think of many games where the A.I as been good at all. I think it's mostly because we expect too much of them. We don't tend to realise that it's a machine reading code and not a real thinking human, so they don't tend to have too much initiative or common sense. What to us may be a smart decision that makes all the sense in the world, may read to the computer as insane.

Though if I was to go with the A.I that ruined it the most for me then I'll go with the popular choice on here. Dragon Rising... That game annoys me with it's painful A.I along with a list of other bugs. Now to be fair, the friendly A.I is no worse then I've seen in most shooters. However this game sets it up to be an extremely realistic vision of war, bullets are affected by wind and drop... One hit can do you for good, maps are massive and you can take which ever route is to your preference and it's sets it self up as an extremely intense and impressive game.

However all this work goes to waste and the immersion snaps when I have to deal with the A.I. They'll ignore your commands, make poor decisions and walk straight in front of your gun when your about to shoot then blame you. The enemy A.I seems a whole lot better. Not the best out there but they at least look like they are trying to use some sort of strategy against me.

See what set the bad A.I out here was mainly because everything else was working well and was starting to feel like a realistic combat experience but the A.I made it all feel like I was just playing a game.

I agree. She died too easily and never ran from epically huge boss monsters that repeatedly insta-killed her. More of a pain-in-the-ass than a help at all. I spent more Sand Tanks saving her than doing anything for myself.
