Most likable/unlikable protagonists?

I have played a lot of games where the main character is unlikable. Even if the game is fun, some appeal is lost. A few games that I find suffer from annoying or uninteresting protagonists include: Condemned, Half life, Dead Rising.

Games that include interesting protagonists include:
GTA 4, Blazblue (Ragna), Oddworld Munchs Odyssey, Kingdom under fire: Crusaders (Gerald for intense taunts.

I found Niko Bellic in GTA4 and Altair in Assassin's Creed pretty unlikeable tbh

The character you play as in Saints Row 2 has to be one of my favourites, he/she had so much character behind them. My least favourite being the guy from Legendary, i wanted him to die so much i just ran into the enemies!

Desmond "Beige" Miles, from the Assassin's Creed games.

John Marston, conversely, I found interesting, though some may dislike the accent.

Tidus (FFX) would be my choice for the most unlikeable protagonist of all time.

I agree with this for most unlikeable. Most likeable would probably be Sora.

the guy in necrovision everytime he speaks i want to turn off the game because it reminds me of the cheapest game ever made when he utters a word it looks like he's retarded he sees giant vampire beasts with flails,undead rising from theyre graves,dragons,demons in world war 1 and everytime he sees them he reacts like he has seen them before a hundred times when he sees the undead he says that he has never seen any thing like them but doesnt get scared or anything he continues on his way now another one would be the guy from bishock 1 i just dont like him thats all , the guy from just cause 1 and the main two not so protagonists but my most hated characters of all time are the good and evil consiousnes things from black and white 1 theyre are the most hated because they explain every little thing i already know about the game in conversations with themselves oh no there can't be an effin square at the corner of the screen where everything is ritten how to play instead you have to listen 2 hours of them talking one to another that's why i quit and unninstalled the game before i got past the learning parts and crap oh and the worst part you can't do anything in-game until they are done talking theyre gibberish.

My first thought on seeing this thread was Niko Bellic, his world wearyness and general cynicism managed to make him likeable whilst justifying the multiple psychotic outbursts.

Never had a problem with Freeman though, I think Valve manage to get enough of the character across with reactions etc.

Second this guy! Vaan could have been replaced by a carrot and it would have had the same effect. then again I'm still having sleepless nights about that game. Dreams infested by rabbit women in bondage gear and gambit systems. and unless summons. and pointless story lines. and Penelo...

best character- 50 Cent, Ok let me explain. Yes blood in the sand is a dodgy game but at least he was honest. None of this crap about saving the world or save some girl.

I agree with you on Tidus but, Sora? From Kingdom Hearts? That kid who has the intelligence of a light bulb? It's your opinion, anyway.

It's hard for me because I always play RPG's. I'll come up with something.

EDIT: Okay, most unlikable being any protagonist from the FF series and most likable being Niko Bellic.

I like Ezio from AS2. Desmond, well, not the worst, but I'm just saying I'm glad most of the game followed Ezio.

Did not like Vaan from FF XII though. Wanted him to fuck off so much.

Serious Niko Belic? He was so much more human than the previous GTA games

I hated almost every single character in FF XIII, every single one was either; heartless, uninteresting, annoying, whiny or a prick

Raiden, from metal gear solid 2 was my least favourite character ever. Most irritating twats usually have something endearing about them, but not this guy. Knowing you were playing him instead of snake didn't help his chances either.

Most likeable protagonist: Link, John Marston, Mario, nearly any character that doesn't speak to be honest.

Least likeable: James Earl Cash (I think that's his name, from the Manhunt series). Seriously, why the hell would someone inflict that type of torture upon human beings, no matter how innocent they are?

Yes Sora. He's not all dark scarred and deep like some game heroes, but he's easily understandable and never gives up. Thats enough for me.
