Gotta say Mario. Not that it's milking has necessarily been the most grating but the amount of Mario products inside and outside of video games is kind of ridiculous.

To be fair, games like Counterstrike and... Wait, that's about it... Have since become a standalone game with an independent playerbase. And you can't really call any game using the Source engine a "mod" of HL2. Even if it uses a modified EXE. So that counts TF2, DoD, L4D, and Portal out, among other things.

Definitely Mario , Nintendo really needs to stop making new Mario games or remaking them (for a while at least)

Legend of Zelda! Since the 3-d era it's pretty much been the exact same game over and over.
At least Mario mixes it up by going in to space of using a vacuum every now and then.

Mario, Zelda, COD, AC, Final Fantasy, Street Fighter & Marvel VS Capcom. MVC is just getting started. All sports games.

Mario, Star Wars, Call of Duty, Halo, Final Fantasy.
I'd say Zelda too, but at least the mechanics and art style change enough to call them different games, whereas in Mario, the 3D ones are like 64, 2D ones like the original. Call of Duty, I genuinely can't tell the difference between them. Halo, some neat new mechanics but very similar in gameplay.

I've got to agree with all the people saying Mario, COD etc. because of the sheer number of games - and Pokémon obviously, because they just invent fifty-some new creatures and put out a new game every once in a while.
But I'd still have to say that Final Fantasy appears to me as the most milked franchise in the way that it has gotten more and more bland and horrible over the past several years.

Look no further than Nintendo. They have been milking their franchises like it's been going out of style almost since their inception.

Final Fantasy has to be the reigning champ though. Not only do they have more than enough sequels, they have just as many shameless spin offs. It wouldn't be so bad if the games didn't plummet in quality with the latest instalments. It's a series that really needs to die, or at least consider a name change/relaunch.

I know many of these francises have been milked more than the francise I had in mind.

But I think Lemmings deserves mention for being milked to death.

There have afew sequels, many MANY ports, and a few spin-offs.

I don't know of a game that's had as many ports as Lemmings

its becasue it's probbly one of the better abandonware games out there
but im inclined to agree it was milked to death when theres a spinoff that involves paintball and the game is now dead

I for one am fed up to the back teeth of Mario - for crying out loud, come up with some new IP, please. Not just making a thing and then sticking that bloody plumber on the front. Same thing goes for Zelda really... Give the public new characters and stories. Though I think the industry today is more geared towards rehashing existing IP than creating new ones - new stuff is riskier and likely to be less profitable...

EA's continuous release of sports games, which are effectively the same thing with a new number tacked on the end. Release updated teams as DLC instead of charging fifty quid again. But of course, where's the profit in that? Silly me.

At least Final Fantasy gives you (with a couple of exceptions) a new world, character set, storyline and gameplay mechanic each time.
