Basically a thread to say which obscure books/films/games etc. you love and why.

Book:

Tales From The Wyrd Museum

A series of books that borrow heavily from Norse mythology. So Woden, Norns, Yggdrasil. But the museum collects all the weird stuff of other legends over the years.

Outlaws of the Marsh (Water Margin)

This is the title of my translation, the one in brackets is the japanese title. Classical eastern novel, although not really obscure in China, Japan etc. it is quite obscure to the western culture.
About a group of outlaws, many who have been wronged by corrupt officials, banding together to destroy them and to reestablish power to the Emperor.

That'll do for now. I'll post more later on as well.

T.V:

The Twilight Zone

Not really obscure, but it is certainly an unknown to everyone I try to talk about it. It's basically a T.V show of short weird stories. My favourite so far being "Mr. Bemis on Doomsday".

How Not To Live Your Life

What I liked about this series was the unlikeable main character and the Gag humor. e.g. 5 dance moves that won't impress girls.

It would be a bit ironic if this thread went into obscurity.

I like a lot of obscure music kinda as I go through related videos on Youtube and find relatively unknown bands. I'll put just a few examples in this spoiler here:
Deathcore/Dubstep hybrid between the singer of Suicide Silence and Big Chocolate. They're both pretty big names on their own, but a lot of people I know haven't heard Commissioner.

Between my dubstep friends who all listen to Deadmau5 I was the one who found Ephixa and they love me for it because dubstep remixes of Legend of Zelda songs are awesome.

Pretty good alternative band that isn't really popular yet. Their music is featured in Black Box TV videos a lot.

Greek metal band that uses and entire orchestra in their songs. Not sure of their popularity in Greece, but in America people shit themselves when I have them listen to this cover of Michael Jackson's "Beat It"

They're an independent comedy metal band who have gotten pretty popular due to the Beer! song, but a lot of people don't know anything else by them. Saw them at Warped a few weeks ago too.

Whispered is a Norwegian band that plays Japanese Samurai themed songs and uses traditional Japanese instruments in several of their songs.

Not too obscure since they played Warped Tour and they've been in a bunch of magazines, but it seems that NO ONE I talk to knows who they are so I share them a lot.

So yeah, those are just a few notable "obscure" bands that I have. I don't really have any obscure things other than music.

Obscure book would have to be The Sight by David Clement-davies.

Obscure movie is Pan's LAbrynth, even if it is in the top 250 of IMDB.

Obscure game is the .//Hack and .//Hack G.U. series for the PS2.

I once read a book about a man who fades from reality and enters a sort of limbo where everything is grey and he can't interact with it, but is himself still very much real.

I read it when I was younger and thought it was totally awesome, but I've never been able to remember the title or find it on the internet, and not knowing haunts me.

So... it's so obscure I can't remember it. How's that for obscurity.

Pan's Labrynth is not an obscure movie it is insanely popular and made tons of money.

I know. At first I was going to post that it isn't, but since I am the only person I have ever met in person to ever having heard of the movie. You are right though, it isn't that obscure.

One word... which I've pasted about the place, but few really know it:

'Copenhagen'

Favourite thing that involves Daniel Craig.

I read this comic once called The Goon, and found it to be hilarious. I haven't met anyone else who has ever heard of it, though.

The only obscure things I commonly interact with are books.

So on that note...

Right now I've just picked up Mary Renault's Alexander trilogy and am quite enjoying that.

And I'm slowly but surely making my way through Romance of the Three Kingdoms, a ridiculously old and long Chinese novel.

It's is such a refreshing show seeing it is made by the French. I'm pretty sure that outside of France it's obscure since Youtube take down any episodes of it. Maybe it will get popular once the game is official release in the US soon.

They're hardly obscure now. Not the most popular band in the world, granted, but not unknown.

OP: I'd tell you but you've probably never heard of them. Bit of a cop out I know but no one seems to actually pay attention to replies in these threads, rather they just attempt to out-hipster one another.

I'm pretty content with liking things other people like, makes for more interesting conversation.

Hmm. I listen to obscure, foreign artists for music. One example is Himekami, a Japanese new age artist. His music is both calming, and heart-pounding depending on the song. It grabs hold and keeps you begging for more!

Most obscure book I've read was the Diaries of the Family Dracul. There isn't a single person I know who has ever even heard of this series; much less read it! Same for every site I've ever visited.

As for movies? Again, I watch foreign films alongside American ones. Namely, I watch horror. Most obscure being a french film from 1975 about two young girls. I'm trying to remember what it was called, but am having a hard time recalling the name.

Oh right, media.

I dunno, I'm pretty boring with my media intake.

I play games that are neither old nor new (eg. Games that are about a year or two old, but not really new releases) with a few notable exeptions (DA2, Fable 3, pretty much any sequel to a game I've finished and loved all tend to be release day purchases/plays.).

I read Penguin Classics books (Arabian Nights at the moment) which pretty much everyone has read.

I listen to the radio and songs that I liked as a rebellious teen (Slipknot, Blink 182 etc).

I watch movies that are either or TV or that I see on the 360 dashboard when I feel like splashing out.

I don't read any super cool comics (I read my girlfriends comics).

I don't collect anything weird either (I collect collectors editions of games and buttons).

I am a pretty regular, every day, normal guy. (I got $600 in the bank mothafuckah!)

Enter Shikari was in a major music magazine in Australia in 2008. I remember because my ex (who wasn't my ex yet at the time) got super hipster-pissy about that as she'd been a fan since before they were signed.

It was required reading viewing at my high school in year 12. It was a Blockbuster.

Anyway, I haven't seen Inception so I can't pretend to be some sort of movie expert.

For cliffnotes of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms play Dynasty Warriors. I think you need to play as Shu to achieve the actual story. I don't remember though.

I wish I had played ps2 horror game "obscure" then I could say "the most obscure thing I like is obscure...HA!" but I haven't, so I can't.

I love old school horror B-movies (whether actually old like creepshow, or newer ones done in that kind of vein, like planet terror, eight legged freaks, and slither) and earth defence force.

Coming to think of it, those two might just be linked. If I make it as a director, one of my aims is in fact to revive the giant bug sub genre.
