The Final Fantasy series have tend to have awesome and unique stories
I would agree, but most of them (I haven't played all of them) end up with the player saving the world.

Anyway to answer I think that Dead Space was a massive rip off of Solaris and Alien.
You have me curious now. I haven't played Dead Space, but I am most intrigued - what did it borrow from Solaris?
The whole spaceship that went to investigate a planet, brings something back from the planet, the crew starts hallucinating, they all kill themselfs and then the Alien part kicks in when..the Alien rip offs get in scene.
not really hallucinating as much as turning into crazy monsters and eating eachother
The Alien mosnter only infected the dead. The crew killed it self from mass hysteria and hallucinations.

It's true. But what games don't? Other than Harvest Moon, naturally.

It seems to me like a lot of stories are pretty predictable. One thing though, I love the first KOTOR and I liked the story in that game, then I played Mass Effect thought it was good and then I realized that Mass Effect's basic plot is completely ripped-off of KOTOR. I know that they were both made by the same company but I didn't think the people at Bioware were actually so lazy they would reuse the same storyline. Hopefully Mass Effect 2 will surprise me.

GTA doesn't involve saving the world.

Ah... This is gonna get me flamed, but Eternal Sonata. Sure, the game itself wasn't that good, but the plotline was original: A musical world that exists inside the head of a composer in a coma, and the entire game has a musical overtone to it? Very interesting idea, if I do say so myself (though it was executed poorly)

I forgot about GTA. But can GTA realy be considered to have any story at all?
I never thought so.

Well for ORIGINAL story (not necessarily the best though) I'd have to say Killer7.
I have to agree 100% here. Killer7's story was easily the greatest draw for the game, in my opinion, the fantastic voice talent being second-greatest.
Even after finishing the game... I don't know how many times now, I still continue to discover more about the story and the characters. Aside from having one of my favorite stories in a video game, I consider it to be my favorite game of all time.

I tend not to notice if a story rips off of another, so I can't really comment there... >_<

Ar Tonelico 2
Disgaea
Okami
Trauma Center
Baroque

I'd go on, but this just reveals just how much of a weeaboo fag I am and not particularly proud of it.

I'm going to agree with alot of people and say Killer 7, Okami and Psychonauts. Deus Ex had a fantastic story and dialogue, though i don't know if it's counts as original seeming as it incorporates many sci-fi elements. Dreamfall: The longest journey had a pretty good story too, not mindblowing, but more well executed. Shin Megami Tensei series (which i haven't played all the editions of) are pretty good too.
