Correct me if i'm wrong, but i found Bioshock to be quite original... The idea of this underwater city for the brilliant minds of the world. The story line was uncommon for its genre and some of its features i had never seen before in any previous game.

Defines gaming?
I'd say Diablo 2. It's almost like an old arcade game in its addictiveness. It's nothing but gaming.
Most orignal?
Still is and always will be Sacrifice.

HOMM 3-5. the battle system was unique, the races were unique, and the design was unique.

obviosuly. You play as a sackboy for christ sakes, jumping around a platformer collecting balls of points and the checkpoint is a fucking GONG. Lol, the most original (and best, imo) game of 2008.

Guitar Hero. I know they have been around awhile, but the original concept was new.
Also, LAIR on PS3, yeah it sucked, but it was original

Pong obviously.

It was the first game to be made mainstream in arcade and later have a port to home computers. Pong's success is more or less the reason we even have a game industry.
Also space invaders.

i would have to say either portal or half life 2 and all its various expansions/episodes

The technology in those games was completely new at the time, with graphics and effects being leaps and bounds above other games. They were at the time, and still are, awesome games

No. It wasn't. [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guitar_Freaks] Nor was the rockband drumkit, [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drummania] or the incoming DJ games [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beatmania].

A game that defines gaming? Tetris. Its a very simple idea that is incredibly playable and highly enjoyable. Just as games should be.

GTA: The whole idea of intentionally killing cities populations is one of the most original ideas for that time. All shooters were showing was you killing monsters and other creatures that were able to harm you. Killing off thousands of innocent citizens was a fresh new idea.

Stubbs the Zombie in Reble without a pulse: Reversed the roles of every horror game made till then by making you play as the zombie in a comically plotted stroyline.

Beyond Good and Evil The main idea is to take photos of creatures for scientific research, but you're thrown into a weird situation and you must be the world's eye, by taking the role of a photojurnalist in order to expose a powerful leading faction.
