I searched and a thread like this hadn't been posted since 2009 so here it goes.

Whats the most over rated game around today?

For me its got to be CoD. The entire francise.

Minecraft, I'm still playing the game, but I don't think it's as great as everyone makes it out to be. Sure you can build a house, but what do you do after that?

Most over-rated? That's hard for me to answer but I would have to say... wait, hmm... (This is where I paused to think for 10 minutes) Grand Theft Auto, the entire series. I was never able to get into it and I just don't see how anyone can.

Either that or minecraft like the post above. Without multiplayer its pointless, and even then its kinda difficult to keep yourself entertained.

I'm voting HALO. At least from the second one onward, while the original still wasn't amazing it did at least add something to the genre.

Oh gee. It's this topic again. It always ends up being so positive.

On-topic: I have to be honest, I really don't understand why people say the Mass Effect series are great RPG's. I feel like they are overrated in that aspect. Sure, I think they are great games (Okay, I think ME1 had a great story but terrible gameplay) but I feel the actual RPG aspect of the games aren't very compelling. I suppose I look past it because I do think that BioWare did a great job on the characters and their loyalty missions, even if the actual main story got stupid at points. Don't have high hopes for ME3 though.

I'm having a hard time thinking back at the moment, but I'll say Crysis 2 for now since it's fresh in my mind. It was like the first game (the first half of which was fantastic), with all the best aspects removed. Somehow it still managed to get a lot of good reviews.

Half-life 2, dragon age, mass effect. Take your pick.

They all just had loads of words and dialogue while the gameplay was repetitive and ass. Well mass effect can be forgiven as it was a halo school console game.

I would still say halo and kotor is easily better then mass effect. But i guess you guys are talking about sequels above. I just played halo 1 fnarr fnarr.

I'm not exactly a fan of throwing around the term, "overrated". Really, it just seems like an excuse for people to ***** about popular games that they don't like.

Anyway, I'm going to have to say both Ocarina of Time and Final Fantasy 7. For the amount of praise they get, I just didn't enjoy them very much. I didn't really see why either is so popular/revered.

Ever have lego as a kid? It's like that.

After you build one thing, you build a more different thing. And after building that more different thing, you build something else. You just keep building & digging & crafting & going. That's the real deal. It's E-legos.

For me? A tie between FF7 and Morrowind. I will never understand how either of those developed a fanbase.

Portal. Seriously, it was not handed down by God himself to be the salvation of mankind. Sorry to disappoint that cult that seems to be forming.

I don't think you can really call CoD overrated any more. The only things I ever hear about it are how it's absolute trash and it's destroying the gaming industry.

I do not thik CoD is overrated, it is a good game and can back most arguments it makes. You may personally think "Too mainstream", but in all honesty if CoD had died after the 3rd FPS today would be lacking ALOT of what CoD has brought to the genre. Thats just my two cents feel free to disagree.

OT: Final Fantasy, I don't see much point in saying anything about this. I just don't think it truly deserves the amount of love/fans it has had for the past few years.

I think OoT gets the praise it does because it is the first Zelda game in 3D and I think its the first Zelda game for a console since the CD-i Trilogy.

Speaking of the CD-i Trilogy for Zelda do those fit in the timeline somewhere. I am going to laugh if they do.

I say borderlands.
Played it for about 4 grueling hours, telling myself "it must get better, it must get better...", inviting a friend for the 4th hour because the coop was oh-so-popular.

I can't believe people grind this thing. It was neither funny, nor witty nor challenging nor anything - just bland desert with bland enemies beeing killed by bland guns.

I usually LOVE Diablo styled hack&slash games with slow character progression, but there was NOTHING in this game keeping me awake. No cool moves, skills or weapons I WANTED to use. No story that kept me going. Even the visuals felt like a sweaty sock in my face. I can only take "bland orangy desert" for so much. Worst of all: the interface. On Pc, you play against your interface, not against those mutant-hobos or whatever.

Then you build a castle out of diamond.

The thing is, Minecraft isnt so must a game as a box of legos with skeletons
