...ok so it's not a bad formula, but it is overused.

Hero A spends the whole game working for organization B thinking they are doing good, only to find out organization B is evil, so they are forced to turn on their employer in the end and try to un-do all the stuff they spent the whole game doing.

So you want more games to act like a weekly episode of CSI? Lost planet isn't Post-Apocalyptic btw... Also i'm pretty sure GoW isn't also... It's not like nukes went off or something. Calling it that would be like calling ww2 post-apocalyptic.

Yeah pretty much anything along the Military Industrial Complex line. There were some awesome movies in the 80's about that stuff, e.g. Robocop, Bladerunner, Alien etc, but now its a bit overworn. Do arms manufacturers and biotech firms run the world? Maybe, but Ridley Scott stopped me from caring.

Hero A saves Girl B and probably puts his Hero B in her Girl A.

I'm tired of the whole "Hero of the story is an extremely lazy kid who woke up late to do his chores (just to happens to involved sword training). Being late to do his chores means that he wasn't present when evil dudes showed up and destroyed his village, leaving him a destitute and lonely child. Child protective services seem to overlook child as he goes off and begins slaying anything mean looking for the next 10-14 year, then finding out mommy and daddy were not who they said they were and he has the hidden potential to destroy gods!"

GASP! ZOMBIES! While the fully trained-in-firearms cops die horrible deaths at the zombie hands, you pick up a stick of bubblegun and a pistol and begin laying waste in a fashion that would make Arnold Schwarzenegger's (sp?) muscles implode. as you pick up more powerful objects you single handedly kick ass and take names.

50's-style dystopias are starting to wear on me, though I wouldn't call them overused. I'd like to see less "You're saving the world as a military soldier from the Russians."

You start out as a normal boy in a normal town and suddenly, HOLY CRAP everything changes forever! You are the only one who can save the world, even though there are others much more qualified than you. Basically, as someone said before, all JRPGs.

That and, "Gotta catch 'em all!" Please just let it die.

On the other hand, one of the most original (and disturbing) plots I've seen was in The Path.

'Object X if Action Y will destroy Universe Z unless Hero A can stop it with Object B'.

I.e that some great thing when activated will destroy all the universe unless the hero can use something to stop it. This is the backbone for a lot of plots for epic scale action stories and to it's credit it usually works. Some examples of games that did it quite well are Halo (in which object X is the Halo ring itself which has the potential to wipe out all life in the galaxy unless it can be stopped) or Mass Effect (in which case Object X is the Reapers and they intend to wipe out all life in the galaxy and must be stopped). Also in the Elder Scrolls Oblivon object X was in fact the world of Oblivion that threatened to consume Tamriel and, must be stopped.

It is the basic plot outline for a lot of games that help add the sense of urgency that stories require and sometimes work as the framing device for great epic tales with rich interesting characters but that doesn't change the fact that it's a formula plot device.
One which works but an over used plot nonetheless.

A bunch of scientists with no will to live and who wouldn't pass any kind of animal health inspections kidnap a powerful creature and try to use his/her/its powers for their own ends. Said creature then breaks loose and goes on an all out killing spree.
