Basically, who is the strongest individual game character you get to control directly and in real time? This should be based on the close-to-endgame character.

Rule out all strategy games as in some you effectively play god. Turn-bases RPG characters can't really be compared to a real-time controlled character either.

So, here's my nominees:

- Ryu Hayabusa: Can block or outright dodge gunfire and anything short of a giant energy beam will have a very hard time hitting him as he is extremely agile. He can also fire back with explosive arrows. Up close his attacks are brutal and extremely fast. He also has magic. He can run or jump up walls. In Ninja Gaiden 1, he can even enchant a rock to fly him around.

- Dark Jedi of various descritions: Slightly slower and less agile than Ryu, but they have the force... not sure if Ryu could withstand a chokehold, otherwise I'd hand it to him on pure speed.

- My winner: Alucard. Yup, he's very old and not that fast. But, he can instantly turn himself into poison gas or teleport avoiding any incoming fire or damage. He has a huge arsenal of very damaging magic too and can steal his opponent's health. Coupled to special moves for his strongest weapons that allow him to instantly appear behind an enemy and stab them, I think he's got this. In fact towards the end of his game, he pretty much is invincible.

Any others spring to mind?

My third character in fallout 3. He's a scientist who also specializes in stealth and energy weapons, and he kicks ass.

Edit: That doesn't count. Who then...who....Mattias Nilsson from mercs, simply due to the sheer amount of firepower he has backing him up.

Link.

Think about it. He can harm pretty much anything with his sword, has tons of magic, and the most powerful attack does maybe three hearts of damage to him when he's fully upgraded. And he can carry resurrection fairies for those times.

Kratos refuses to ever die and seems to brutally decapitate everything he's ever encountered that's looked at him funny so far. Despite some pitfalls he's had I'd have to argue he's at least a contender, especially if you consider his revolving-door relationship to death/Hades and his Rage of the Titans, among other things.

Also, he has a cod costume, with hooks. Yikes.

Honorary mention goes to The Arbiter, this shouldn't come to any surprise but in my own personal opinion he's good with a sword and can turn invisible at the drop of a hat. Even though you only ever directly take control of him in one game I still felt the urge to mention him. However he loses some points for only being playable for half of one game and only in co-op in another.

So other than that I got three:

3: Raikou from Otogi: Myth of Demons. He can fly, glide, teleport and send enemies flying back for miles with a single swing of his sword. Truly a badass warrior, made all the better by never saying any stupid catchphrases.

2: Jack from Bioshock, having all the weapons and plasmids you can think of as well as an abundance of other skills, it's not hard to see why ol' Jackie boy gets a mention here. Seriously, nothing else in Rapture even had a chance.

1: Alex Mercer, while a nilhilistic and somewhat unlikeable guy he can shapeshift any part of his body into any number of various weapons and can run on buildings and fly. He can also destroy choppers by kicking them and he can eat the entire physical being of a living creature.

Well, Ratchet is a pretty strong contender, though sadly not a winner (because of all those demigod cheaters like Kratos and Alex Mercer). Not that he has any supernatural powers or some shit, but he packs so much firepower that he makes Gork and Mork look inadequate.

What game is this? I may wish to get it.

Kratos: Agree he is one fearless, complete and total badass, will go head to head with anything up close, but he can still get hit fairly easily with long range attacks.

Ezio/Altair: They are both pretty good, but not super-human level fast or strong. Staying hidden, maybe. In a straight up fight, there are stronger characters. (...and yes, I'm pretty sure they can't just counter everything)

Alex Mercer: Hmmm, haven't played that game enough, can he dodge bullets/explosives?

Reklore: Alucard is from Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, PS one game, bit of a collectable these days. Alucard is a vampire, the son of Dracula.

Samus. Try stopping her with a fully upgraded power suit.
Samus Aran was my choice too, great minds think alike it seems :)

My runner up would be Kain from the Legacy of Kain series, after all, anyone who can have their heart ripped out and it doesn't kill them certainly makes them powerful.

Their entire game design is built around breaking the world down into chunky lumps. They've destroyed all life on Mars. They fight the army, the planet and one another and at the end of it all... they do it all over again.
Rrrrrrampage!

(Or possibly Tim from Braid. He might be built like a garden gnome but he wields absolute control over the time stream and he can't die.)

gotta say... Gordon Freeman

seriously, he first takes on the US army with a crowbar, then he goes to the alien world and kicks ass with a crowbar, then he takes on the combine with a crowbar.

Oh, and he's an MIT graduate, no combat experience, just a rogue physicist with a stubble and a power suit
