Guilty of buying mounts for WoW (I have a mount collection addiction) and DLC for Mass Effect 2 and 3.

I bought the alternative squadmate character skins in Mass Effect 2.

Without seeing them first.

Then ended up not liking any of them.

The stupid thing is, some of them were good, except the designers then went and forgot their Character Design 101 and covered up the character's eyes. Jack for example gets a cool looking leather vest thing, but then they also added this retarded reflective metallic band over her eyes. Grunt's suit has a projected HUD thing covering his eyes. Miranda's has a visor. The list goes on.

I learned my lesson though. For ME3 I hunted down some proper screenshots before buying anything.

I've also bought some DLC and then never got around to playing it. For example, the Knife of Dunwall or whatever it's called for Dishonored. But that's just down to time and interest rather than shameful purchases. For all I know the actual content is solid gold and worth every penny. Or not. I may never find out.

I bought that Kingdoms of Amalur pre-purchase to get some special set of armour in Mass Effect, or something. Bought KoA on the PC, refused to sync it with an Origin account and then grabbed ME on a console anyway. Pretty clever there indeed.

Didn't play KoA for about 3 years after that. Didn't get a prepurchase code. Never got my armour.

F knows, guys. I have no excuses.

Eh. I don't know.

I've seen free-to-play games do some crazy stuff with what they choose to charge money for.

Personally, I've spent a small fortune on Train Simulator DLC (yes, THAT train simulator).

But I can't say I've really regretted any of it... People look at that 'game' on Steam and see that all it's DLC combined adds up to something like $2000, and freak out, but they're just missing the point of how simulators and extra content tends to work.

There's nothing new about this. Look up Flight Simulator X and try getting a few scenery packs and extra aircraft... But because it's on steam, and you can see it all as one lump sum, it confuses people.

In reality it's similar to having a model train set. Nobody complains that your starter train set didn't include all the extra track for free, nor extra trains... It's just how it works...

Anyway, that's kind of off-topic really, but I bring it up because I've probably spent several hundred on 'DLC' for it... So... Yeah... >_>

Honestly? None... I've never bought DLC without it coming attached to a game somehow (think GOTY editions and the like) or it being a full-blown expansion pack.

Any game that advertises itself as a free to play game, but then hides content behind a paywall that is either actually necessary to play the rest of the game, or so significant that you might as well not play at all.

I understand free to play games need an income, and I don't mind microtransactions overall. But I think there's definitely a difference between doing them right, and doing them wrong.

An example of a game I've played where I feel they do it right is Warframe. Anything in the game can be unlocked for free by playing the game. Granted, a lot of weapons have time walls for crafting and such, but you can still achieve it from just playing the game.
You can then purchase an in-game currency with which you can purchase weapons and a bunch of other stuff. It makes it convenient to pay, not necessary.
Additionally, you can actually trade this in-game currency between players, so if you find something awesome you could get lucky and earn some of said currency by trading it to another player.

*sigh* I bought like 10 booster packs for Mass Effect 3 multiplayer. I just wanted to complete my Selarian and get his colors and I was getting impatient. In the end...so not WORTH IT! I mean what the hell were those skin variant colors?! They didn't change a damn thing!

On the plus side I unlocked a good amount of new characters.

But yeah, I caved to microtransactions... :(

Probably some of the cosmetic armours for Tera; I'm a weak, weak man who it comes to scantily clad Elven women; and whatever the hell the Castanic are.

Honestly the purchase that I feel the most shameful about isn't DLC, but a full blown game. I was frustrated with all the issues around Oblivion/Fallout 3/Fallout: New Vegas that I swore I wouldn't buy Skyrim. I eventually caved and had the exact same problems I did with those other games.

I bought the "Time Saver" DLC for Assassins Creed 4, which removed the need to grind for resources in order to upgrade my ship. Paying extra for not playing the game sounds pretty awful, but at the time the grinding was becoming quite bothersome.

The one I'm not proud of is when I've bought alternate costume packs for Street Fighter IV because Chun-li looked so hot in that black and gold evening dress alt. I never really played as her until I bought that alt outfit.
I'm sure it made my Blanka jealous for a time when I was ignoring him.

That and the Arkham alt Batman costumes. Don't regret them, but objectively, I'm sure I only played in those alt costumes a few times. But still, I can't NOT kick a little ass as TAS Batman given a chance.

I would mention horse armor but there are others as well.

I bought several cosmetic items for CK2 at full price. I was surprised how "refreshing" it makes the game, seeing more variety in the portraits and units, until I realized I could just wait for a sale or get mods. Those Iberian packs, though, look tempting.

I also got the season pass for the Mortal Kombat DLC characters on Xbox. I loved Rain and Kenshi but hated the others for the way they handled. This is especially shameful since I got MK9 Komplete on Steam for 5 bucks.

Certainly the worst was with the Spiderman 3 movie game New Goblin character. Pay five bucks for use of some dude on a glider I'd get bored with after a while? Sure.

My most shameful purchase (not really ingame but whatever) was a paid maphack for a certain RTS because it felt like everyone else was using one and nobody got punished.

Shortly after this, my account was permabanned.

Ah well, lessons and all that.

You might never play it but I actually thought the Two Part Daud DLC was better than the base game. Daud is a more interesting player character, not surprising seeing as he was already the best character in Dishonoured and I liked the story more than the one present in the base game. Also it makes some improvements to gameplay, especially non-lethal play. You can carry more stun darts and get non-lethal mines and grenades.

I thought charging for Catwoman in Arkham City and Javik in Mass Effect 3 were both pretty scummy. That didn't stop me buying them though.

I bought the infamous Horse Armor the day that it came out. All I remember thinking was "WTF? Is that it?"

The worst DLC that I ever bought was every DLC for Just Cause 2. When I bought them, I didn't realize that every single item that you paid REAL money for was prohibitively expensive in in-game money. To make matters worse, you had to re-buy items every time you wanted them. I purchased the boat as soon as I had enough money to do so, accidentally fumbled my controller, and the boat backed on to land and exploded. I never even got to use it. When I called for another boat, I rudely found out that I needed to pay for it AGAIN, only now I didn't have the money to do so and wouldn't earn that much money for quite some time.

In the end, I wound up never using a single item that I bought as DLC because it was all too expensive for one-time uses.

personally spending real $ on virtual vehicles in world of tanks and star trek online

Citadel.

Some advice: If you enjoyed the series at all, play Citadel. It's solid gold. A bit cloying with the fanservice and in-jokes perhaps, but gold nonetheless.
