Most shocking twist or ending to a game?

I know there have been tons of threads before asking for the best endings in a video game, but I just replayed Resistance 2 and it got me thinking of the subject again. The Resistance franchise has a pretty flimsy storyline, I'll admit that, so it's in no way a competitor for any creative awards.

Having said that, I think Resistance 2 has the most shocking ending I've ever experienced in a game.

Not the best; simply the most shocking. And this is partially because the storyline was so flat that I wasn't expecting anything good to come of it. So when the ending finally did roll around, it caught me WAY off guard.

To those four of you who don't already know, Capelli, the least characterized Sentinel, ends up shooting Hale right before the credits roll. A character dying is hardly an original conclusion to a story, but it came so far out of left field that my jaw dropped for a good ten minutes.

So I'm not looking for the best twist or the best ending. Just ones that you found particularly unexpected. Ones that smacked you across the face when you thought you were in for a nice, easy ride.

EDIT: A lot of people here don't seem to know how to use spoiler tags. You just put [ spoiler ] before whatever you write and then
[ /spoiler ] after (without spaces between the brackets, of course)

Well, there's obviously Bioshock. That's the one that pops into my head right away.

The main one that stands out in my mind is the ending to Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge. I'm not sure if it was good or bad, since it never got a true sequel, but it was certainly unexpected.

Does it count if the twist came some time before the ending? If so, my favourites are:

Sam & Max: The Devils Playhouse (and season 2)
Second Sight
God of War
Eversion
Beyond Good & Evil
Psychonauts

I'd reveal the twists, but I'm not a fan of spoilers.

Second Sight. Mostly because my first thought was "HOW THE HELL DID I NOT SEE THAT MAI BRAEN IT BOOM" And then you replay the game and it all makes SO MUCH MORE SENSE.

The ending of Portal 2 has a bizarre and surreal feel to it that caught me way off guard as well (the relevant achievement was even called "Lunacy" and described as "Yes, that just happened").

I would argue that, after the Andrew Ryan sequence, the Bioshock story became utterly bland and predictable.

In the first few levels alone, I managed to piece together that Atlas was Fontaine. That much was expected. And after Andrew Ryan dies, the rest is just a journey to kill the big ol' bad guy, just like every other game and their mother.

Knights of the Old Republic. Not quite the ending, but when you
Find out that you're Revan, it really hits you. By far the best twist I've ever seen.

The only one that I can remember recently (besides Bioshock since it was mentioned already) would be Final Fantasy X.

I did NOT see that coming. Playing through the game a 2nd time there are some hints that Tidus isn't real, but it definitely caught me by surprise the first time I played it.

Modern Warfare 2's ending is pretty shocking.

Shepard organized the attack on the airport with Makarov to start the war and kills most of TF141. Makarov is still on the loose, and Soap and Price are on the run and branded as traitors

Pretty heavy stuff. Also, Enslaved had a pretty out there ending.

The party finally makes it to Pyramid, where they are beset by giant robots. Pigsy dies getting them in, and they meet the "leader", who is actually a centuries old AI program designed to keep the survivors of the apocalypse happy and comfortable by plugging them into a Matrix-style simulation of the 20th century. Monkey tries it out, and is dumbstruck before Trip murders the man powering the AI and frees all the humans. It ends with Trip in tears, asking if she did the right thing by releasing all these people into a post-apocalyptic wasteland, and Monkey has no answer

That ending! Pissed me off to no end, especially since the writer left after Monkey Island 2 and the plot point was never resolved.

Damn, ninja'd. I have to agree though, it's the biggest twist I've personally experienced in a game.

Kane & Lynch 2 pushed the boundaries of how anti-climatic an ending can possibly be, so much so that even after such a mediocre experience that was the previous couple of hours of gameplay, I was still genuinely shocked.

Or am I missing the point? Bioshock was already mentioned.

EDIT - NO NO NO I'VE GOT A REAL ONE!

GTA: Vice City. Being as young as I was....

Lance flipping on Tommy

took me completely off guard.

mmmmm FFIV and FFIX didnt see those coming and to be honest that was because they made zero sense on the other end recently I did not see the twist coming in Xenoblade chronicles which was suprising as it makes perfect sense and is integrated wonderfully best twist I have seen in a long time.

thank you for complaining so well I don't have to :)

On to the subject at hand God Of War 3 ending I was like WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING!?!?!
in a good way... probably could have predicted the ending if I wasn't mindlessly playing it like: bad people dying! YA-EEE!

edit 1 sec later: woa! I just typed in the first word to post that is that how its always been?

Bioshock - *spoilers* Despite what others are saying on here, I don't think it was that easy to guess that Fontaine was Atlas. Frankly, in 2007 I wasn't ready for games yet to have that level of storytelling. I expected Atlas to simply be some barely-necessary npc that moved you from level to level. I was delighted to find that novel-worthy content was included in a game for the FIRST TIME. Bioshock broke ground in many ways. Besides that, there was far more interesting content and twists in your bloodline and being controlled.

AssCreed II - *spoilers* When Minerva turned to the camera and said Desmond's name for the first time I nearly threw my TV out the window, screaming and running around as if I were on fire. I was so astonished. I had not expected that at all, and Ezio's reaction fit my feelings precisely when he asked, "Who is Desmond!?"

Persona 3 ending spoilers

The ending to Persona 3, That last scene with Aigis on the rooftop was awesome(for the record I chose the "...'s" cuz just clicking "close your eyes" sounds too defeatist) I still don't see how The Answer needs to exist though, the ending didn't really raise any questions that needed answering. The MC dies sealing Nyx, case closed

Maybe that's just me trying to justify how I can't be arsed to grind my way through a fuckton of dungeons...

Also Saints Row's ending, your character speaks! Then gets blown up (he gets better)

Also also Persona 4's playable epilogue
