I agree with the guy saying "Silent Hill: Shattered Memories". They threw out every staple of the franchise and still made an epic story that hangs on all the characters while out of their original element. Kaufman is pretty cool this time around, and great twist at "the lighthouse".

Otherwise, the greatest game twist of all time is; "Samus Aran is a chick?!"

Creators of Bioshock and Systemshock take the cake with this one.

Talking about cake, Portal had a funny twist with that also

I'd have to go with Fight Club, the reveal caught me completely off-guard. Also the revelation in BioShock

I was pretty surprised by halo 2.

Don't ask me why, I knew the first one had sold more copies than god and had single handedly brought casuals into the fps market (with auto-aim and regenerating health, of course), made by a developer that before then, barely made any games worth mentioning... But I was still pretty surprised.
Not familiar at all with the Mac gaming scene, I take it? As odd as it sounds now, Bungie were pretty much revered as gods by Mac gamers for their creation of the reportedly brilliant Marathon Trilogy.

As to the topic at hand, a recent one I really enjoyed was the past of Jack in ME2. I suppose it wasn't all that shocking, but it was surprising how well it all played out.

Oh, and I agree the SO3 twist pretty much spoiled a game (and almost a whole series) I had previously found enjoyable. I still love SO2, and somewhat enjoyed SO4.. but I have almost no fond memories of SO3 at all because of that garbage.

I actually didn't see it coming when ashley killed wrex in ME1 and I was so mad, I dashboarded, chucked a chair at the wall, and then did it again.

Seriously, why did you put the twist at the end for those who haven't had a chance to play it yet?

Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean.

You know the one.

I'm a girl, and that twist left me walking funny. The game as a whole was average at best. It did have some glorious moments shining through the verbose JRPG pitfalls, despite it's horrendous ending. But everyone remembers it for the plot twist.

I'm still new on The Escapist, so I don't know if I'm going to be torn to bits for mentioning a fairly obscure JRPG.
I was gonna say about that twist damn beated me to it. Great game, one of my favourites on the gamecube (i liked it more than final fantasy 10 even O.O) and the game is not as obscure as you might think. A couple of people including myself have mentioned it on these forums before.

anyway welcome to the escapist it's nice to have more people of the female gender come and post here
Charmed. Thanks for the warm welcome.

You play Baten Kaitos Origins? In my opinion, it improves on almost everything that it's predecessor did. Especially in the voice acting and writing categories. But instead of one hard hitting plot twist, you get three, slightly lighter plot twists in quick succession. It didn't hit me quite as hard as Eternal Wings did, but still.

You mean when you're trying to get the thing, and the guy screws you.
If so then that was spoiled for me when I was looking at multiplayer skins.

The twist at the end of Fallen really got me, and made me like that movie even more.

Knights of the Old Republic caught me completely off-guard. It was the best twist I've ever seen in any medium.
maybe I'm just old fashioned, but i like the Citizen Cain style of twist, more than the KOTOR style. one where there is a mystery to be solved and that it turns out to be so out of the blue it catches you by surprise and causes you to re-examine the entire journey with great depth of thought. thought provoking, maybe even moving.

The other, a villain disappears, the hero isn't really sure where you came from but is conspicuously poorly placed at the opening of the tale. several minor hints latter (Revan may not be gone) and several really big ones (why does a smuggler have advanced jedi powers) lo and behold you are the villain (pause for effect)sooooo.... now what. in KOTOR the "twist" is not surprising if you have been paying attention at all, and on top of that has almost no effect on the narrative.

Bleach spoiler reveals the series main villain.

When ever Aizen faked his death and came back as the main villain, I honestly didn't see that coming
