the Brotherhood Forever in TES5
jesus fuck
main problem is that it never fucking ends, whenever you finish it, it restarts with another target
it'd be grand if you could, like, cancel it or something
although it's a different type of "annoying", isn't it =P

I still haven't collected all the feathers in Assassins Creed II (and subsequent games.) Way too monotonous for me.

Though I've heard that the figurine collection sidequest in Wind Waker is even more tedious. I dread to start it.
Oh god, the Wind Waker figurine quest is the worst. You take your camera and take a picture of any enemy or NPC and then take it to a guy who makes a statue of it. That's fine, except your camera has a capacity of three photos and you have to play the sun's song twice between each photo you return. There are well over 100 statues and I think the boss ones are even missable. Plus the sculptor guy is a little off the beaten path as well. I don't even think there's a reward past just looking at the damn statues.

I'd also vote for the family feud chain of quests in Borderlands 2. Tired cliches argue with each other and force you to go back and forth across the damn world like eight times before eventually rewarding you with a crappy pistol you immediately sell.
Let's not forget he was picky about what qualifies as a good picture. Oh and you couldn't even start the sidequest until second playthrough iirc. But damned if i didn't collect em all anyway -_-

OT: It's actually a good question, i've had my share of tedious sidequests in my 25 years of gaming.

I could mention shooting pigeons in GTA4. Near impossible to find without a guide, hard to hit, and the gunfire attracted cops. I only killed 1 without a guide, but im not sure when, where, or how. Possibly a stray rocket? Never did finish this quest.

Or how about Pellet Figurines in Tales of Symphonia? Pellets are pretty rare and you had to trade in a bunch just for a chance at a new figurine. Another quest I gave up on.

In FF6 I read that General Leo could be recruited late in the game. I don't remember but i believe it involved killing a bunch of tyrannosaurs in a row. I spent days on it, only to find it was a damn hoax.

In Demon's Souls, manipulating World Tendency to get all of the unique items was a hassle and a half. Oh and Pure Bladestones? FFFFUUUUU

But my hat goes off to Oblivion. In the mages guild there was a quest where i had to cure myself of vampirism. I had to find a bunch of uncommon ingredients while only travelling at night and bring them to the count of Skingrad. Here's the kicker: I couldn't find the count for the final step, searched the whole keep. I eventually found him, but i guess I had trespassed while looking, because immediately after talking to him, I was arrested without being cured. But the game recognized the quest as complete so i was stuck as a vampire. I didn't have a backup save so I had to restart the whole game. I don't think I've ever been more pissed at a game.

Skyrim, Fallout 3 and New Vegas. Any quest that involves "talk to NPC #2314583, proceed to trek to opposite corner of the goddamn map." There's epic journeys across the landscape, and then there's busywork.

Oh, I almost forgot. Aveline's date in Dragon Age 2. At least it gave us this brilliant picture.

I wish Something Awful hadn't pulled Shadow Isaac's Let's Play. It was one of the funniest things I've read in a long time. Especially when InternetKraken got a "cameo"

the quests Bleed me dry, Return to Sender, Still In The Dark in fallout New Vegas is Pretty tedious. it is especially the case if you refuse to use fast travel. but the Wind Waker Nintendo gallery is the most tedious side quest I have ever done.

you forgot to mention the pictures taken can be denied; which is kinda annoying.
the award is the guy makes a figurine of Link and the King of red Lions along with you getting the right to brag about how you wasted valuable time in your life do this pointless bullshit. in other words the you are correct; the only award getting to look at the statues.

I got every single figurine including Knuckle [http://zeldawiki.org/Tingle_Brothers#Knuckle] who can only be obtained if you connect a game boy advanced to the gamecube/wii. It's impossible to obtain it once the Link and the King of red Lions statue is added to the galley.
It was not a side-quest worth beating.

I advise even if you have the have the desire to 100% wind waker; don't don't do it becaues it's not worth it. If you if you ignore the warning and want to do that sidequest there is no need worry if you miss some one time enemies on your on your first playthrough. There is always new game plus were you start off with the camera and all figurines made in the first/previous playthrough('s) are saved.

Essentially most quests in Skyrim. "I accidentally my [useless/common item] in a cave, with monsters, and death, also traps. Mind fetching it for me? I could spare... 50 gold pieces! I also have no fucking clue as to how it got into the deepest corner of the cave, probably reason."

This probably goes for all None Main quests in most RPG's.

Finding all the resources/artifacts in Mass Effect 1, the only hint your gonna get about finding them is when your on a planets surface... and there are ALOT of planets.

Out of all the games I've played: FFX and the stuff you need to do to get everybody's celestial weapon.

Dodge a couple hundred lightning bolts in a row without getting hit once. Or play a buttload of blitzball. Or do a buttload of chocobo racing.

Pretty much all of them are tedious, frustrating or both.
Dammit beat me too it. Chocobo race was the reason i never beat the game. I love the game though but still i never thought i could hate chocobos im my life before that

In your opinion... what is the most tedious sidequest you've ever undertaken? Something that really made you yawn in the middle and made you think 'Did they really think this is fun'?
Dragon Age 2.

'Cause let's face it, it's sort of like a bad, pointless sidequest.

I love FFX but I have to agree with this.

I'd also say New Vegas. So many boring generic side missions in that game.

Collecting energy shards in Infamous probably takes the cake is it's one of the few collection missions I've tried and given up on (vs. completing Assassin's Creed and GTA collection missions).

While I generally love GW2, there's one quest where you only have one option on what to do, and it's to trade rocks and other useless junk between four Jotun. It is boring, seemingly random, and doesn't really tie in with the world at all (as virtually every other Jotun you see tries to kill you on sight).

That unmarked sidequest in Fable 3 that goes on infinitely with the only goal of amassing as much money as possible through the landlording business, but every once in a while, you have to go through menus and repair every single house in every single city one by one while that should have been possible with a single mass repair button.

Good thing it's so lucrative, or it wouldn't be worth it.

Ok I fixed your statement.
when asked to get x item from y location in skyrim it most often involves fighting draugrs in a crypt/tomb.

Just Cause 2. Those formulaic military invasion missions. About as entertaining as brushing my teeth every day. How you manage to make destruction boring, I'll never know...
Pretty much word for word what Yahtzee said. As for me, I'd go with the Arena battles on Taris from KotOR, and the sidequests you have to do for the Jedi Council. Such a lack of imagination continues to amaze me that people consider this the best western RPG.

90% of Maplestory quest are all basically go kill x number of creatures or collect x number of crap drop by creature(bonus points if it something that has a low drop rate. i know this the same for other mmo's but my god at least they have variety with quest.

More specifically, the Nesingway quests in WoW.
Really? The Nesingway quest lines were probably my favorite quest lines in that game. Both in Stranglethorn Vale and Nagrand. Probably my two favorite places in WoW. Now it was a couple of years since i played, so maybe it has changed. But I liked them back then! Even though these types of quests aren't my favorite, maybe it was just the areas I liked.

Oh dear god the lightning bolts. I've done it, but I'll never recover from that. There's a small part of my brain that's still sitting in the corner cutting itself and crying. Chocobo race isn't too bad, it' just luck based / as long as you avoid the birds you /should/ be okay. Aurons Crest which came from getting all the monsters was pretty tedious, but at least you didn't have to concentrate, just move the stick around and hold X.

Blitzball on the other hand I love, although that seems to be restricted to me and my mate, we'd spend aaages sitting there taking turns in playing blitzball. We were both heartbroken when they turned it into a crummy manager game in X-2

I'd love to see it made into a full fledged game to be honest, had great fun with Blitzball. Obviously it'd need to be fleshed out and changed a bit for multiplayer to work with it, but I think it'd be a great spin off game.

Aah yeah the lightning bolts were horrible! I just couldn't be bothered with that even though I found FFX to be a great game. And I agree, the blitzball was pretty fun! But once you knew what players to pick up you just started dominating the rest of the teams which was a shame. And once the Al-bhed dropped their goalie which seemed to be way better than anyone else it was basically impossible to loose.
