I remember when I played Fallout 3 for the first time, a friend of mine send me a pic of the world map with marked points of interest.

One of those points was ol' olney...

I was a lvl 4 with no ammo for my gun and encountered my first deathclaw, never heard him comming until he was right in front of my ready to tear my head off.

That kind of startled me :/

So Ive played quite a few horror games, survival horror games, just-generally-creepy games, etc, and I found my self wondering which one I considered to be the scariest. I considered Dead Space for a while, but I actually came to an odd decision:

The Dunwich building in Fallout 3. Those of you who went looking for the bobbleheads will remember it as the haunted office building, where you experience hallucinations, flashbacks, find the bodies and logs of wastelanders who try to find shelters there, the diaries of Jaime as he becomes a ghoul, the automatically slammign doors and floating objects, and of course, the giant demonic obelisk in the undershambers with hordes of ghoul worshippers. After the Blackhall quest was added, it got even creepier...

Considering all Ive played, I didnt really expect this one to top the rest, but its one of the few that Ive actually stopped playing because it got to me like that... So tell me forum, what game, or what part in what game, has terrified you the most?
The Dunwich building was amazing, yet another homage to HP Lovecraft in a Bethesda game. There is one in Oblivion too that is a quest called 'The Shadow Over [insert town here]' that pretty much copies Shadow Over Innsmouth only with Oblivion monsters.

My own terrifying moment has to be the start of the ending movie in Eternal Sonata. It's so long and make so little sense (like most of the game before it). And you can't skip it...

I preferate disturbing to startling, which is why Silent Hill 3 was horrifying entirely. when it comes to startling, then condemned: criminal origins takes the cake.

Probably the first time one of the plastered spider splicers in the Fort Frolic level in Bioshock sneaked up and jumped on me. It came up so silently, because I was expecting the normal splicer screeching.

Suffice to say this: "The Path" endings. I swear to god, after seeing a cute little girl die in barbed wire, I uninstalled the game as fast as I could!
P.S.: That's only one of the many weird things in that game...

Yeah, Fallout Three has quite a few references in it. The Book of Eibon is in there I think, and the Kvblahblah whatever its called is part of a duest involving dark evil.

Mine isn't a scripted event or setpiece. I was playing Quake once and I had killed most of the monsters in the level I was doing but there was a big one (the big white things that shot lightning and went 'ogghh', I think they were called Shamblers or something?) who nearly killed me. I ran away to get a tiny bit of health and when I came back he had gone. I cautiously went around the level for about 30 seconds, unable to find him. Then suddenly I turn round and he's right there behind me and he instantly kills me the moment I see him. It made me jump more than anything else in my life. Definitely the most terrfying moment in gaming I've ever had.

I never like any sort of 'spider' creatures in games either, the Spider Splicers in Bioshock 2 creeped me out a bit but the spiders in Thief really made my skin crawl.

The Dunwich building was pretty awsome/freaky.

Vault 108 really freaked me out though, strange thing is im not all that sure why.

As of yet, nothing else has affected me like these two places.

I din't find the place that scary.

OT: The beginning of the last Scarecrow's hallucination in Arkham Asylum.
The one that broke the fourth wall. THAT was scary.

The sound those damn Regenerators from Resident Evil 4 will haunt me forever. Also, since I'm afraid of heights, the Blades of Hades from the original God of War. Oh yeah, and the dark apartment in the Chicago level of Resistance 2.
Yes,yes, yes. When i first heard that crash i shat a few too many bricks.I unloaded every bloody bullet i had into it,and was left fighting the other 2 with my knife. Then i reloaded from earlier on,got the thermal scope and lol'd at them when i 3 hitted them. And then i got my Chicago Typewriter...Oh sweet revenge.

Oh,and on the subject of RE4,the first encounters with Dr salvador, the bella sisters and J.J give me shivers.

That place is a lot less intimidating when you have Fawkes backing you up at level 24. Jesus christ I will never ever piss Fawkes off he does not die, from anything ever. We'll be trekking through the wastes and all of a sudden I'll hear RWAARGGRBRAGLE *pew pew pew* and I'll turn around to find a pile of dead raiders.

The first quest in Broken Steel when the orbital drop destroys Liberty Prime (those Enclave bastards) I was pretty far away from him (the robot) and Fawkes was practically touching him shooting at a couple of Enclave, orbital drop hits, Prime goes down and I figure "Shit that Probably killed Fawkes I'll have to reload" out from the dust walks Fawkes hardly injured. Yeah, never fucking piss him off. Even as far away as I was it still knocked of 200 of my HP and crippled and arm and a leg through Winterized T51-b and adamantium skeleton.
Before:
Fawkes [||||||||||||||||||||]

After:
Fawkes [ |||||||||||||||||| ]

Think I'll go with Fawkes being terrifying in general. Oh and I've had him with me since escaping Raven Rock, he has yet to use a single Stimpack.
I once tried to kill Fawkes, I used everything in my inventory. Nothing worked. The only way I've ever been able to kill him is by pushing him off Tenpenny Tower but even then the first time I tried he CLIMBED BACK UP and proceeded to fill my face with laser.

Little girls, this seems to say / Never stop upon the way
Never trust a stranger friend / No-one knows where it may end
As you're pretty, so be wise / Wolves may lurk in every guise
Now as then, 'tis simple truth / Sweetest tongue has sharpest tooth.

Aaaaanyway I'd have to go with Ravenholm. As a wise man once said: 'RAVENHOLDM WAS NOTHING NYE'.

You know, I always feel really confused when people say this about the Dunwich Building - when I went there nothing happened. No doors slamming, no hallucinations, just a load of feral ghouls. Is it random maybe? I feel like I'm missing out on something here!

The scariest moment in a game for me was in Project Zero 3, when you have to photograph the little girl nailing something into the wall - you do this early on in the game and have to do it again later to unlock a door. On the second time you do it she doesn't disappear like most ghosts do, instead she turns around and looks directly at you.

Nearly wet myself.

I have to say that the bit in eternal darkness when you go into the bathroom...

[spoilers] You pull back the shower curtain, and suddenly the game flashes to showing you dead in a bath full of blood [spoilers]

I don't know why but I just never expected it or anything so it nearly gave me a heart attack!

Really? I think most of it is scripted. The most noticeable would be the flashback of the pre-war of the scientist, which is replaced by a Glowing One, and then the gigantic Obelisk. Is it possible you were too busy slaughtering ghouls to notice?

Every second of the Penumbra series.
Scariest games ever made.
This, without a doubt. They're the most atmospheric games I've ever played. Overture (first in the series) had me on edge every second, had me moving so laughably slowly through the game it only made me jump more when something scary did happen, and best of all? When you get to the end you realise "man, I've shit myself enough times to die of dehydration, and yet only fought mebbe 10 enemies during the whole game"

If you like atmospheric, pants-wetting games, Penumbra is what you need
