I refer you to my previous post. Save for the likes of Star Wars and Warhammer, Halo has the most expansive and original backstory I know. And I say that having read the books, played all the games and basically looking at all aspects of the story. If you've played it then fair enough. If not, then as I said to the other guy, you have absolutley no right to comment on it.

Halo. Here are some aliens. Kill them. Here are some parasites. Kill them too. Oh yeah and all the other faceless super soldiers are dead. Have fun.
It seems you never played it and if(doubt it) you did and you thought the story sucked, I'd like to see you do any better.

I'm sick of people saying that.

Most people could probably not make a decent story. However, most people are not selling a product in which a quality story is expected. So just because people can't write a better story, it does not make their complaints invalid.

However, I really don't think Halo has that bad of a story.

Most games these days...mostly FPS. IT might be because FPS is supposed to be fast-paced that compelling stories cannot be appreciated when you're main objective is to just shoot anybody that's not your allies.

Although Call of Duty 4 proved the above statement wrong by giving a usual FPS scenario and creating a nice and different pace in FPS storytelling. Have you ever seen Modern Warfare 2 trailer? That trailer was heavily based on the continuing story and not just showing off how cool the nameless, mute protagonist is.

Overdone storylines? Hmmmm.... JRPGs.
How does this even make sense? Care to explain?

Overdone storylines? Hmmmm.....FPSs. See how that makes no sense at all?

Halo has a good story, but I don't think I can agree with you on the whole most expansive and original backstory bit.

People should bear in mind Halo was not generic, sometimes I wonder if people even know what the term generic means. Name three games Halo is similar to.

Guitar Hero. It's just so generic, and been done to death.

this is coming from the guy who though seven pounds was a "good" movie.
Hey, everyone has the right to an opinion. If you saw Seven Pounds and didn't like it, then fine, but I did like it and yes, I thought it was a good movie. You have your opinion, I have mine. But what I'm saying here is that whether you like it or hate it, you cannot reasonably say Halo's story is unoriginal if you know anything about it. Like it or hate it, I don't care, but even those who hate it still generally agree that it's original, and that's because it isn't simply the standard generic 'Space Marine kills aliens' crap. My second point was that having an opinion is fine, if it's informed. If you played Halo and didn't like it then fine. If not, then you have no right to make any comment on it whatsoever. I never played Bioshock, although I'd like to (a student budget limits the games I can buy now), so I don't comment on Bioshock. Likewise, if you haven't played Halo, then don't comment on it. It's as simple as that.

It really didn't. Just most people apparently have high expectations for a FPS having a great story. Guess most of those people play too many RPGs.

Halo, take a look at the factions of Starcraft, the take a look at Halo's. It's kind of like coke and pepsi, both are good but people have their own personal opinions about the which most likly demonises the other, but we all know coke came first.

True and if you dork yourself out enough the books add some depth to the games story.

Tales of Symphonia, combined so many cliches into a single story line. Wasn't a bad story though.

I have to agree.

Plus it features horrible plot twists that are painfully obvious. The main characters in that game act like morons.

I guess Pokémon games, they all start pretty much the same and have similar ultimate goals. A lot of Nintendo series are like that but in Pokémon they're all in the same setting (different areas of the same world).

Not that the interceding events are as repetitive.

Whats the most unoriginal story you've ever seen in a game?

Call of Duty 4 and both Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter games games
GRAW? Really? Yeah, the second was a little dry but the first one was great. Maybe it felt unoriginal because it was supposed to feel like it could actually happen. I could be that you're confusing realistic with unoriginal...

This is a difficult thread because on one hand you could easily say any movie game is unoriginal. I don't think I'll actually put in a vote.

Take elements of Starship Troopers such as, well everything except the bugs, Ringworld, and a few other sci fi classics and put it together and what do you get? Halo. Other than a few names, there is very little anything that could be considered original about the story other than how many pieces of pre-existing art that can be ripped off and integrated into one story.
