Norman Borlaug [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norman_Borlaug] Look him up. It's a miracle his name isn't widespread. He ranks high on my personal list of favorite peoples.

EDIT: I double-checked my list - he's at the fucking peak. I wouldn't have learn about this man if I didn't watch Penn and Teller's Bullshit. (Fantastic show, BTW.)
THIS, a million times over.

John Lacetter. He was the first animator at the little corner of the Pixar computer graphics company that made little animations as basically tech demos for the company. He and a few other tech guys stayed in a cramp corner spending all their times on the animated shorts that was only used as advertisement for Pixar and little else. When it became the computer graphics business was going to fall apart, Pixar got out and became an animated commercial company before having Disney come by asking if they could do a little CGI movie for them, and Toy Story was the result.

Andrew Wood. I can only wonder what he would have achieved if he was still alive. Maybe not as important as some other suggestions in this thread, but Mother Love Bone were amazing while they lasted.

Princip Gavrilo. He shot Archduke Ferdinand, setting World War I in motion. If he hadn't done what he did when he did, the entire starring cast for the rest of the century would likely have been completely different. Stalin, Hitler, Churchill, Lenin and so forth are only famous because they happened to be at the right place at the right time; a window of opportunity opened for them and they stepped forward to take it. Had it opened elsewhere, someone else would have had that place.

Sure, maybe Europe really was a powder keg waiting to go off, but when and where it did so forced the ever-shifting pattern of alliances to settle into the pattern we now know. His shot marked the end of the hundred years' peace; the subsequent wars broke Europe's dominance over the rest of the world.

Well in terms of how earth shatteringly evil he is...having been a cornerstone in the cold war and 'purging' millions (read:killed) from his own country, he rarely gets half the attention of Adolf Hitler does, despite both being mustache raving mental...so in regards to that he is under-rated

Personally? My vote goes in the UK to Steven Tyler, seeing as here only 3 fucking people of heard of him, and whenever I say Aerosmith are my favourite musical act I get this conversation

Me: "Aerosmith"
Misinformed idiot: "Oh really, I like them to"
Me: "Oh cool, whats your favourite album?"
Misinformed idiot: "Oh...ermmmm"
Me: *groan* "favourite song"
Misinformed idiot: "Dont want to miss a thing, from the film..."

Yes because apparently Aerosmith only ever sang Walk this Way and Dont Wanna Miss a Thing...

Globally...Keiko Nobumoto and Shinichirō Watanabe

One of the main streets in my city is named after him and I didn't know who he was (I had a vage idea). You learn something every day.

Osamu Tezuka. He's the God of manga, and no one else has created so much manga that's still so good, and yet any manga fans I meet have never read anything of his.
What manga has he created?

OT: I do not have much idea, except all of the teachers of the Conservatory of Chihuahua. They deserve to be on history. Particularly Liparit Terzyan and Ahmed Anzaldua.

How about Benjamin Franklin. He did a whole ton of interesting stuff.
Everybody knows about him. Everybody. And although a Franklin enthusiast might consider him underrated, I honestly cannot understand how he could be considered as the most underrated person in history.

Astro Boy among others, though it's far from his best creation (though good, don't misunderstand me). He also created Black Jack, Phoenix, MW, Ode To Kirihito, Buddha, and others. But since these titles aren't brand-new, not many English-speakers read them.

Oh, and I don't know if what I did now counts as a double-post. If so, I'm sorry.

Never heard of those (except AstroBoy of course, which I didn't like), I will check them out.

Also, I do not think what you did counts as double post.

That man is why we have cheap grain, and therefore, cheap food. Plain and simple. That man was THE greatest man alive.

I don't need to say anything else.
