Circle of Doom, for me, felt a lot like a Gauntlet game. It would depend on if you like the genre.
I think I do like this genre; and it's not usually a big one with the critics. I like hack-n-slash games that involve a lot of killing and looting. Not only was I a
NINETY-NINE NIGHTS fan but I also thought
BALDUR'S GATE: DARK ALLIANCE for the Xbox 1 was fantastic (now supported, albeit pretty crappily, via back-compatability.) Loved Diablo II of course.
Circle of Doom should be showing up anytime, so I'll find out soon.
DEAD RISING is absolutely a great game, one of the best for any system in years; I just didn't think to include it at first because it seems to me it was pretty well-received. However, when I think about it it is still underrated. It should've beaten out bigger, more hyped games like GEARS OF WAR and OBLIVION for Game of the Year that year. There's nothing else quite like it. It's part RPG, part action sandbox, part story-driven adventure, part hack-n-slash beat-em-up; it's both incredibly fun, and highly challenging. I think some people were put off of it just because it was so different, and even for me, it took a little while to wrap my brain around the confusing save system, the linear-but-optional aspects of the story-driven gameplay, and really click with the game as it was meant to be played (i.e. you'll probably want to do multiple play-throughs, just levelling up your guy and concentrating on useful unlockables like the mega-man blaster on the first play-through and ignoring the main story -- this way, you also get to see the different endings, too.) And it's one of the few games I know where after you finally beat it "the right way," it opens up a whole new "overtime" game. But it's not just an extra mode, the story continues into it, and in fact you haven't really beaten Dead Rising or seen the end of the story until you complete Overtime. Then there's Infinity Mode after that or whatever it's called, but that's more just a regular "mode," not part of the story. Such a great game on so many levels.
I'd like to try
ENCHANTED ARMS and
LOST ODYSSEY sometime, too; they both seem promising to me.
ETERNAL SONATA is beautifully designed but it's just way too goddamn linear and confined for my tastes.
