I reckon barbas is the best cause he doesn't take damage at all and is a great distraction tool for enemies. Easy to take down dragon priest with him. (temporary follower but yeah just dont finish his quest) can be a pain for sneaking though

Do any of them have much of a backstory? I've just been using Lydia and I'm pretty disappointed.

Not really, the companions are usually Mercenaries, so theyre just in it for the meager loot i give them.

I find them to just be in the way, so I haven't bothered much with followers.
The one I used the most was that woman you punch until she drops in Whiterun however.

I've been doing great with Lydia. She's listed as essential, so she can't die, and she pretty much tanks enemies with no problem.
There's also that Dunmer mage from the College. She can dish out a lot of damage, but she's extremely vulnerable to physical attacks.

The only companion I know of is Sven. He's fairly good with an axe, and can cut up some Bandits rather nicely.

None. I make my own fortune without anyone slowing me down.

My tactics rely on discretion and silence, therefore I cannot have noisy companions following me around, the clumsy farts.

Though the extra pockets they carry would be handy on more than one occasion. Alas, that is the price I pay.

So I checked the Elder Scrolls Wiki on the followers and I have one major issue with the way followers work. Aparently the followers are set to the players level whenever the player enters their zone, I honestly need some confirmation on this, it seems like this leaves most of the companions useless at later levels and I have no idea if this zone is limited to the city or specific building they are found in, also wheter of not their level is set to the players upon talking to them or recruiting them. A minor yet still gameplay enhancing thing that I wish they put in the game is having two followers at once for the classic warrior, rogue, spellcaster adventuring party, or any combination of the three, in fact I still haven't tested if that glitch from fallout is still in effect so this could be possible.

I'm currently using Stenvar as a tank, but hes terrible at it so I think I will be switching to Barbas soon as he seems to fit the roll of tank better in your description.

Lydia is essentially my extra inventory. A friend of mine actually has Faenlin follow him and he gets archery training from him then proceeds to pickpocket his money back. Talk about killing 3 birds with 1 stone: upping archery, sneak, and pickpocket!

I'd say Farkes, total tank.

Solo all the way. There's a little more romance to it.
You need to be either alone or in a party big enough for conflict to occur in the group, but small enough that everyone gets some characterisation. Somewhere between 4 and 9 people is best. 3 as an absolute minimum.
2 people just doesn't work on this kind of thing. When your tale is told in future years, it'll kind of suck. Or it'll be told as if there were just one person, and the other gets relegated to 'trusty sidekick' status.

Horses here don't count as party members, but should be named for maximum story appeal.
Note: Unless their death is by way of a heroic sacrifice on your behalf, and represents the bond between man and beast, you don't mention that you've accidentally had 3 horses die under you due to falling damage. They're all one horse as far as the bards will be concerned. I apologise to the broken corpses of Parallax 1, 2 and 3. Ion gets a mention for holding off a couple of necromancers and their skeletons whilst I dealt with the rest, then got distracted by lockpicking.

Having played the game more, I have to say Erandur is my favorite. The quest where you team up with him is very cool AND he's voiced by the same fellow who did Joshua Graham in the Honest Hearts DLC for New Vegas. There is nothing more badass than having Joshua Graham as your follower.

I also don't believe in friends. My Nord warrior journeys alone. Friendly AI is one of the few problems I have with Skyrim, and especially their infuriating tendency to move in your path as you swing your weapon makes them good for little more than creating collateral damage in my honest opinion. And frankly, they're not even necessary, since I don't have much problem killing anything on Expert with no magic and minimum potion chugging. If my next character is a spellcaster, I may have to revise my opinion, because it will likely make the game a lot harder to survive. That, or turn down the difficulty setting to Adept, I guess.

Go to the Shrine of Azura, just south of Winterhold.
Do the quest that you get given there.
Hire Aranea Lenith upon finished the quest.
Rape everything.

Then thank OnyxOblivion later for telling me about it so I can share this awesome follower with you. Here is the location of the shrine. [http://images2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20111115081129/elderscrolls/images/thumb/4/4a/2011-11-15_00002.jpg/553px-2011-11-15_00002.jpg]

I dragged Lydia's ass around right up until I'd completely learned Unrelenting Force. Then she... fell off a mountain. She was a good meat shield and living storage trunk, but she had to go.

Far as I can see, there's f*ck all difference. They carry some of your stuff, have a few lines of dialogue they repeat, help in battle, and die if you swing your sword while they're on the ground.

Unlike Fallout NV, there seems no reason to have them besides the aforementioned extra carry weight and battle help. There's no perks to be had, I haven't seen Kahdjro's (sp?) mission yet so no reason there. It's a ball that was dropped and rather sadly because a perk would give a lot more use or reason to have the character.
