This just in, every country on the planet has some terrible, horrible people.

And while my country, the United States, certainly has its problems. I wouldn't say that American culture as a specific influence is the real problem here. This could certainly happen in another country. The woman most certainly has mental issues. Self and entitled to the point of sexually abusing her daughter.

This is every bit as offensive to us as any other country in the world. I can understand where many in this thread are coming from, I, too, am sick of making a remark about a nation every time something that many consider noteworthy for bad reasons happens.

I could at least understand if this were something pertaining to the subject of guns, because the United States does have a gun culture stronger than most countries. But this is certainly not something that uniquely reflects the United States culture as a whole. If anything, it reflects rape culture. Rape culture is certainly not unique to the United States.

Damn straight.
It's awfully convenient too; Florida is right on the coast.
(not saying the crazy woman is from Florida; but that Florida is a concentrated point of pure crazy)

Because every other country doesn't have batshit crazy people too right?

I'm honestly sick of people from other countries hating on America or Americans. I hardly see American's on this forum say stuff like this about other countries.

OT: Yeah. She cray cray.
Ooh! Me next! Me next!
In my country, a family was found guilty in the past year of killing people and not only eating them, but also selling some food made of the bodies!
Really, there are people with serious brain issues all over the world. North Korea probably have a lot of those now, since they have basically concentration camps there (imagine the mind of the guards torturing the prisoners to death for giggles; I fear for their children and what they'll leave to the world after they die).
well, killing people is terrible. The cannabalism angle though i can understand and even apreciate. Ravenous is one of my favorite movies though. It illustrates perfectly how just adding banjo music turns a movie from a horror film to a comedy. Have a source on that story? Just curious about details.
Found a link in English for you: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/04/14/brazil-cannibal-empanadas_n_1426173.html

Here's in two of our news sites if you want to read it: http://noticias.terra.com.br/brasil/policia/suspeita-de-canibalismo-vendia-empadas-com-carne-humana-em-pe,48bcac68281da310VgnCLD200000bbcceb0aRCRD.html

Hum... I'm wondering what do you mean by "understanding and appreciating" the cannibalism angle.
I find it horrible, like forcing your adopted teen to have a child so you can have yet another child to take care of (seriously, addicted to having children; that's a new one for me), torturing people and thinking of new ways of torturing people, using people's trust in you to screw them over, mistreating animals...
Ah... It's been a while since I thought about how shitty people can be to other living beings... I think I'll look up nice stories now, to remember we are also capable of amazingly good things too.
Wow, an interesting case. I was right to ask for details. Made for a more interesting picture of the situation. Thank you for providing me with that. Impressive that a guy was able to get both his wife and mistress to help him out with this. On the other hand i'm not so impressed with his position of only killing women. I understand the rationale given how he wants some population control. But killing women exclusively, while practical for his aims, is still too repugnant to admire no matter how much in agreement i may be on the population control front.

As for my understanding/appreciation for cannibalism: It's more than i'm not opposed to using fellow human beings as a food source. Eventually i'm sure it will come to that anyway given the surplus human population which is far beyond the needs of our species survival and actually working against it given available resources. Yes i'm aware that we may yet have enough resources to support what we have and more, but we are a greedy species and will continue to allow those who have more to keep from those who have none or little. Which means that eventually those that have little or nothing will have to make hard choices in terms of who gets to live and who gets to be eaten. I'm hoping we could at least limit our choices of human culinary options to those too young to fully understand and suffer from the anxiety that comes with death and dying. Otherwise it would just seem needlessly cruel.

As a Brit, I want to disagree with this sentiment on the grounds that not all Americans are like this, but...I...just...can't.

My take away from this? So, a girl did nothing for 3 years but try to get pregnant? Some people got it good. Let's see that girl get up and commute to work every day, pay taxes, bills, and we'll find out which she likes me more.

Just five years in prison for sexual abuse, including statutory rape, of a minor extending over three years?

Just saying that's a little low.
Well, technically under UK law it was neither of those since rape requires the use of a penis for penetration (which the mother presumably didn't possess), and more general sexual abuse would either involve sexual contact between the mother and teen or exposure by the mother, neither of which appeared to have occurred. According to the article she was jailed for "child cruelty", which sounds like a fair description of the crime committed.

Five years enough? Probably, she'll never be allowed to adopt any more kids after this and so I can't see her being much of a threat to the public once she's released, no point wasting our tax money locking her up forever.
If she's american we could just forcibly deport her? Then we don't have to waste five years of tax money on human filth.

OT: That there is pretty fucked up. Our justice system really needs a way to handle people who can be demonstrated to be completely fucking insane and a danger to society and the people around them.

Ive always believed this, you need a license to get married, to drive a car, to practice medicine, but if I wanted to go right now and round up ten women I could make my own army in a matter of a few years and its all completely legal. The only problem with this kind of system is that it could probably be very easily abused by whoever was in charge.

Technically not rape, just sexual assault. Supposedly no part of the women would have entered her so by law it isn't rape. Question is, if a man raped her (weird to clarify this but, "with his penis") wearing a condom, is that worse than her getting injected with sperm?

Anyway, my main thought reading this was...
The judge said the mother also made the teenager use douches of vinegar or lemon and lime juice in hopes of increasing her chances of having a girl.
Seriously? Is that a thing? I mean this whole thing is weird, but this bit just gets me.

Also, AT LEAST SHE WASN'T A GAY COUPLE. JUST IMAGINE THE DAMAGE TO THE CHILD.

You know they're going to say it's because they don't have them overseas. Of course, America's big enough and there's enough going on that we're involved with, that the internet is just about the only place we can hear about overseas news. I wouldn't have heard about this without the Escapist. So... plausible deniability. Americans don't hear about it, non-americans can say it never happened.
