Right, I tried the demo on steam for Mount and Blade vanilla and really, REALLY enjoyed it.
I did some research (looked for it on Amazon) and found it has 2 expansions.

I have to ask. When it comes time to buy them from Amazon (as Steam is asking £15 for the basic one where as I can buy all 3 from Amazon for £22) I was wondering if I should bother with the 1st one?

Are there any major differences between War Band and Vanilla or is War Band just vanilla with a flake in it?

I also saw Fire and Sword is like... Cossack era Russia / Poland. Is it worth getting it or has it pulled away from the original structure to much to be enjoyable?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Listen to a veteran player. Get either the original or the first expansion, whatever tickles your fancy.
most importantly - the game can't hold its ground as a stand alone for long, so after a few playthroughs I suggest you go to their website and browse the many mods you have there. The reason why you should get the expansion is that all currect mods are being developed for it.
.
Fire and Sword just implements what the community had fixed themselves months ago. With fancy hats and voices.

You don't need to have vanilla and Warband is just better in every way. With Fire and Sword isn't that great honestly, way more restrictive than the other two games.

As far as I know War Band is a stand-alone game. It's Mount & Blade but with an online mode. And as the poster above me said, there are a ton of mods out for all the games in question.

Warband is essentially a largely upgraded version of the original. So I suggest getting that one.

Has a new faction, more environments to fight in, a completely re-done instant action mode, more stuff to do, more mod support, and is basically just better.

I've actually never played the Vanilla version actually, only Warband and Fire and Sword.

F&S doesn't move too much from the original I think (comparing it to Warband anyway). Only a few differences, like the Merc camps where you can hire Mercs and upgrade their stuff, and crossbows are now guns.

Warband>Fire and Sword.
Personally I feel that Warband outperforms Mount and Blade, mostly due to it being released as an improved version of the original.
Fire and Sword is a faster and more linear, which doesn't really play well in a Mount and blade game.

Oh man. Get ready to lose 200+ hours into Warband if you play the single player. Fire and Sword was a big let down for me, personally. Really couldn't get into it at all. So if it were me, I'd just stick with Warband, and vanilla.

I agree with the two above posters, the stand-alone expansion (Warband) is the best bet. That said, it is also the most expensive of the three.

Fire and Steel just is underwhelming.

The the main difference between Warband and the first Mount & Blade is multiplayer, a new faction in single player, and a few other minor changes in single player. But, mod support has really shifted to Warband and away from the first. That is what makes it a winner over the original.

Get warband, its just a better version of the original in pretty much every way. I dont know much about the new one though so i cant really comment much on that.

But if you liked the demo then definately get warband and if you have the money get the original too so you can see how much better warband is.

*Out of an unintentional 24 hours Mount and Blade session* The original is pretty cool, but Warband adds a whole new layer of story and possibilities, a whole bunch of cool stuff - quests, another country ... What I personally didn't like about Warband is the remade combat - they removed the coached lance attack (which is basically the toughest attack there is) and the combat felt icky and non responsive (then again it was a long time ago and maybe they fixed it with patches, haven't tried it since). For me combat is a big issue so I went back to the original. Haven't tried Fire and Sword - it looks cool with the guns, but I'm not sure how the guns would affect the battlefield (they seem pretty overpowered from the trailers), the setting looks interesting and all that, but again from a combat perspective you can be really badass with medieval tech, with guns it seems like your talents are taken out of the equation and whoever has more guns wins (kind of like The last samurai movie except without the samurais making a come back).

Warband has everything that vanilla mount & blade has, plus bug fixes and an awesome multi-player. Fire and sword has guns which (in my opinion) break the game a bit and make the game frustrating to play.

Oh no, you can still couch your lance. It's no long automatic, you have to manually press X (The switch weapon type button used for ranged weapons that can double as melee ones) and that will make the lance couch. Just as powerful as it was in the original.

You are the awesome. Seems like a weird choice to do it manually... what with doing it on dozens-hundreds of guys per battle... oh well atleast now I can try and go back to Warband.
