I can see why the concept is good, but I don't get all the hype around the combat system. I tried Warband after seeing it referenced (admitedly, half-joking) as a possible sucessor to the combat system of Jedi Academy. I found it very dissapointing.
Well, the combat is extremely visceral. Shields break, people bleed and stagger, weapons clang against steel etc.

Compared to Skyrim in which you swing away until they are out of health, MnB has amazing combat. What does suck are the combat controls, but there is no real fix for that AFAIK.

I will answer all of the questions in order.

1. I spend 40 dollars on Warband and I do not feel like a wasted a single penny.

2. My largest battle included all of the Nobles from the Rhodoks fighting against all of the nobles from the Nords with me being on side of the Nords.

3.Yes, there is a mod the lets you have like 1000 troops in one battle. Make sure your computer can handle it.

4. Their really is no overall goal in any of the Mount & Blade games. You do quest for Villages and Nobles, but alot of people will tell you that the overall goal in Warband is to become king of the land by taking over all castles in the land and starting a new empire.

P.S. You don't have to really anything you could be a simple bandit, a pilliging warlord, a noble, a merchant. Basically you can be anything you chose to be.

If you like things like the Total War series but wish you could be down with your troops, yeah, I'd get it. The thing with the Mount and Blade games is it tries to do everything and ends up doing a fairly poor job at all of them. However, just due to the fact that you can still do everything somehow still makes it enjoyable.

Just don't go in with really high expectations to be on the safe side. And if you don't like non-linearity or sandbox games, then I would stay away.
