That is actually an awesome idea. Give the actual development team, the people who not only know what they're doing bu know the actual intricacies of the code and engine, time to to make whatever they want. Everybody should do that. It isn't expensive, you don't have to add anything if nothing good comes up, but you get the option of dozens of new features. That's just a smart idea.

Seriously? Am I misreading or are there people posting on this site who are unaware of mounted archers? Wow!

Frankly, lord of the land style player I am, I'm thrilled with the idea that a bandit will now leap out in front of me on my horse only to be trampled and finally, if that isn't enough, horribly slashed with whatever weapon seems to suit the occasion.

Maiming. This game now requires maiming! Giant war hammers, animated crushing blows from horse back. Come on Bethesda, we're counting on you!

A mod to make horses faster and a mod that allows you to whistle to call your horse wherever you are, as long as you're outside, and your horse is suddenly very lovable.
Add to that a mod that makes your horse double as a pack mule, and it becomes infinitely more useful.
And now with mounted combat, it'd be stupid not to have a horse.

You know what would be even more awesome? Mounted bandits. Imagine, roaming the lands when... wait! What's that? By the Nine it's a mounted raid!

And as the DragonBorn you fus roh dah their asses off their mounts and splatter their brains on the grassy fields with your mighty warhammer.

It would make for a nice high level encounter.

Won't they need to introduce some freaking lances? What's the point of being mounted if you're not able to take the same advantage of it that people took for thousands of years?
Well, a couple of hundred years depending on your definition of a lance. There were some horseback-mounted spear use in ancient times (wielded with two hands or thrown etc), but anything people would recognize as a lance is pretty much a medieval thing and came as a result of a bunch of horseback riding advances (spurs, cantled saddles and stirrups) that were needed to get the proper control of the horse. On top of that it's really not a one-on-one weapon outside of jousting and is more meant to be used en masse to cause catastrophic damage to the tight infantry formations of the time. I have a bit of a hard time seeing them work in Skyrim's more Iron-Age-y setting.

Now, if we're talking about adding spears and javelins and letting people use them from horseback I'm totally on board with that. That'd be awesome!

The traditional "thrusting spear" lance has been around since at least Alexander the Great. The couched lance required stirrups, but if your intent is to take a long pole with a spear point and jam it at high speed into your enemy, you only really need a horse. And an enemy, I suppose.

I might well revisit Skyrim once the patch is installed, then. I just hope they've improved the horse controls, i.e added some. It would be nice if my horse would stay put, instead of always wandering off to wherever I "acquired" it from. In the same way that it would be nice if they didn't rush into fights against frost trolls. Thank the Nine for the Resurrect console command.

... sounds alright, but do NPCs ride horses into combat too?? Will there be spears so I can charge at enemies and such?

Well, at least they got there eventually. Any word on spellcasting on horseback? Mages have been gimped enough already, so at least that much would even out the playing field a little.

Skyrim still stinks of waaaaaaaaaaay too little, waaaaaaaaaaay too late. I wanted it to be good, but it just failed at pretty much every turn, adding mounted combat won't change that for me. But I do hope all that effort pleases -at the very least- someone. It'd be a shame for the work put into the addition to go entirely to waste.

No lad. No. You've got to consider your reputation. You don't take on 'mounted bandits'. Slaughtering the bandit scum from horse is just, common sense I suppose. To really be heroic, you make the Storm Cloaks or Imperials hate your guts, and then you take out their cavalry, every last mounted bastard ye find! Aye, you'll win that war yet, whether the scripting likes it or no. LMAO

Seriously? There have to be mounted adversaries now, there's no two ways about it. It would be nice to see roaming bands on horseback. So yea, I'm totally behind your mounted bandit initiative. Of course my horse no longer makes me feel special. I mean usually its rich guys and imperials on horses, just handing them out to bandits... Well there had better be a lot of dead someone's to justify all those mounted bandits. And when they die, I want the horse. Sorry, I can take their armour, cheese and weapons I want the horse to! Or at least the option to take the horse.

Eh, mounted combat seems horrendously overpowered . . . unless they are added speedy or mounted enemies, in which case horses will practically be a requirement . . . unless spears/polearms are added to the game.

These balancing issues likely continue until you give a mouse a cookie. ;)
Maybe the charge doesn't do damage? If it does then mounted may be a bit overpowered, but it all equals out when you consider horses aren't allowed indoors. Now if mounted Archery is allowed it'll be SUPER overpowered.
Also, spears and polearms will (supposedly) be added, though I doubt they'll topple horses or do extra damage to them.

Also, question: Would using the one-handed sword on horseback up my sword skill? Or-and this is very unlikely-are they planning on adding another warrior skill pertaining to mounted combat?

That would be awesome. If Bethesda doesn't do it, I'm sure someone will mod it in.

I'd also like to see enemies on mounts attacking me now.

Now I can feel like I'm in Shadow of the Colossus when I'm firing my bow at a pursuing dragon. You can fire bows from horseback right?

Still no word on an official "No-Spiders" mod?

*sigh* Oh Bethesda the only thing I want out of your game.

OT: Well mounted combat should be fun so long as it works well.
Why don't you just use the 'unofficial' no-spiders mod?

OT: Good for them, although I'm so desperate for some horse armour that I'd happily pay for it.
