Wow, no one mention Volcano and Dante's Peak?

I suppose a recent example of coincidence movies is that Steven Chow film "Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons" came out last Feburary in Hong Kong while the The Monkey King will be out this July (I think) in Asia.
While both films are based on the same legend however Steven Show film is comedy base while The Monkey King is suppose to be an epic film (I think).

There's Dredd and The Raid, which both are about stopping a crime boss while trapped in a building. I liked Dredd better though.
Ninja'd! I can't say I prefer either over each other though. Maybe if Judge Dredd knew Pencak Silat xD?
I liked The Raid up untill the point where the 10 minute long martial arts stuff started happening. The cops trying to getting away from the gang members, punching holes through floors and walls to escape, using a fridge to blow away thugs at the otherside of a door. All of that was terrific. But the moment the lead guy took out a whole hallway filled with goons with his kung-fu I was like "Ah no..."

I know this is the selling point of the whole movie, but there's such a thing as having a fight scene be too long. Especially martial arts fight scenes, where after you get over the initial explosion of the fight it's just dudes quickly hitting eachother without much impact or progress of any kind. During that final two-on-one fight at the end I literally just started tidying up my room to break up the monotony of this endless fight.

I do see where you're coming from, and even as someone who loved the overly long fight scenes I felt the final battle was dragging along by a little bit. I'm curious to know, what did you like most about Dredd?

Well, Dredd himself I liked best. He perfectly embodied this fascist cop that you love to hate, but cry for the moment the shit hits the fan. Also that final scene where he gives a run down of what happened to the Chief Judge like it was just another day on the job, which for him it probably was.

And it was nice to see a brutally violent action movie again. A lot of it was CG gore, but it was good to see anyway.

I do wish they could've gotten Paul Verhoeven to direct it or something - The seams of the budget were visible here and there.

If he'd be willing to follow the established lore and mythos of the Dredd universe, he would be perfect. There is no other film director I know of that does smart satire and commentary while hiding it as a typical action movie as well as he does. Robocop and Starship Troopers is testament to this. Rob Ager's analysis [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jQcUa38KNFo] was incredibly eye-opening.

Now that I think more about it, Verhoeven would be a pretty damn good choice. Get Ed Neumier to write it and we have a winner.

OT: (2010) Kids animated films about supervillains
Despicable Me
Megamind
More surprising is that both are pretty good
Yeah, I was also surprised about that since one or the other typically sucks.

2009 apparently our national appetite for Mall Cops wasn't satisfied

Observe and Report [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1197628/]
Paul Blart: Mall Cop [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1114740/]

Granted one was a kids movie, and the other a dark humour but hey, same premise

1992:

1492: Conquest of Paradise
Christopher Columbus: The Discovery

500 years after Columbus sailed the ocean blue these movies came out at about the same time. I saw them both as a kid.

1993-1994

Tombstone
Wyatt Earp

Both movies about Earp, but it's Val Kilmer as Doc Holiday that I will always remember so Tombstone wins in my memory. I'm your Huckleberry.

1993-1994

Rookie of the Year
Angels in Outfield

Cheesy kid friendly baseball movies.

Unstoppable (2010) and Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 (2009). Same directer, both star Denzel Washington, and both revolve around a crisis involving trains.

2010: Knight and Day & Killers

Both of these have the basic premise of women who end up unexpectedly getting involved with a super spy. By the end of each, there's much love between couples and it all works out.

Whoa... I'm either looking at this too deeply or not deeply enough.
