Movie Defense Force: Event Horizon - You Won't Need Eyes To See

I watched a bit of this on TV once. I remember thinking I really should get around to watching the whole thing from beginning to end one of these days. Eventually. Hopefully. What I did see of it looked really good though.

@Jimothy Sterling, you should watch Elementary the CBS Sherlock Holmes show where Sean Pertwee plays Detective Lestrade a washed up has-been that takes credit for all of Holmes' work.

I just watched this again a few months ago and while I don't consider it one of the best horror films (shitty "in your face" CGI kinda puts me off a bit), it's still one hell (no pun intended) of a VERY entertaining ride, I ALWAYS make sure to watch this with loud volume, in the dark and if possible, alone.

This is definitely one of those movies that just doesn't seem to get old with each subsequent watch (bar shitty CGI) and definitely one of those I watch yearly.

I also like to think this movie is more related to Doom than you might think

Anyone else ever slow down/pause the film when they're watching the video log of the first crew? Particularly about half-way through the movie when it just starts playing my itself and the images come through really clear.

There's some really fucked up stuff going on in that video log. o.o

Wow. It's been awhile since I've seen it. I remember some creepy imagery from the video log, but those are some screwed up shots.

Well, seems like everyone has their own version of that other universe this movie might relate to...

For me, it is the DooM universe. In fact, for a while I thought Even Horizon was the actual DooM movie they had been hinting at for so long, only retitled for some weird reason.

And, honestly, I think it captures the feel of the setting (teleportation opens a gate to literal Hell) quite well.


To this day, the most chilling part of this movie, for me, is the Video Log from the dead crew. Not because of the eye thing... But because they all start screaming in terror an agony the very second the drive is engaged, and my imagination went wild with speculation on what horrors had befallen them.

Guess in horror, rather than "show, don't tell", it's "suggest, don't show".

God, my family and I love this movie to death. The reason it needs a "defense force" is because it was apparently panned by critics upon release. But when has anyone ever taken movie critics seriously?

And so many quotable lines, to boot.

Agreed Jim, this is an overlooked classic, an overlooked "I'm not going to sleep for a week" classic!

...Yep, then that flashback scene. You know the one, the one in which every transition is accompanied by a white flash and a screech that would send the unaware viewer ass over elbow out of their chair. And her face..."well...that's not right at all, I wouldn't...F***!"

Exactly what I thought, actually. This is a very good movie and, yes, this is one of the few that actually managed to affect me. It's not even that bloody, but then most gore fests actually fail to be scary anyway. The implications and hints in Event Horizon are scarier than mere blood ever could be.

Well, I think that's certainly true...but the flashes of gore I saw were...still quite something. Especially right at the end when everything goes Hong Kong style. Almost looks like a shrine to Khorne, particularly situated in the portal room itself. That thing is intimidating.

Definitely lost in the Warp for a while there, but changed in a way that is far more subtle than red goat-demons swinging hellfire swords at you because RAEG.

Well to be fair, Khorne is more about swinging swords and axes at his foes than mind fucking with them.

My personal take on it was yes it got lost in the Warp but some minor daemon managed to get on board the ship, just a little minor daemon not belonging to the Four.

Always tickled me that when Tuvok goes a bit wrong in Voyager the images that flash through his head are almost all pulled from Event Horizon. Even Vulcans liked this movie.

After re-watching this on netflix after so long im convinced its a warhammer40k film lol set in the early days of warp traval and simply got lost in the warp and the shit was possessed by a warp deamon and then in tern corrupted the science guy to chaos who made the ship. Think.....i need to lay off the 40k novels

To be fair, when the film came out, I remember the reviews and the general consensus it received. People HATED this movie, and I remember thinking "what the hell is wrong with you people?" Guess it could be considered pretty niche, but it's encouraging to think that it seems common knowledge that it's a badass flick these days.

This movie really nails suspense and atmosphere, but doesn't match films like John Carpenter's The Thing for me simply because it gives the malicious force a human face at the end. Keeping it in the unknown and inhuman gives me the chills a great deal more than anything else.

Still, it gets nearly everything down perfectly. It lets your imagination run wild instead of spelling things out for you. If they had more time to re-work on the third act I'm certain it would have been a near flawless movie.

One of the ways it could have been improved was to simply keep the root cause of all the horror an enigma, and give the audience clues that makes it NOT wanting to know... Apparently being exposed to the magnetic device for a moment was enough to drive you insane. Maybe it could have been a dimension of absolute serenity and calm. Making you gouge your eyes out and turning your own body inside out, desperate to feel -alive-. Because isn't that a true hell, denying you any and all sensation?

Or not. Believe me, even this kind of mania can be not only entertaining, but useful. For example, I just wrote my Master's thesis on 40k.

And yes, Event Horizon is totally 40k material.
Never knew it reviewed so badly with critics at the time. Goes to show even those folks are not immune to the occasional blunder... Event Horizon is one of the best horror/thriller flics I've ever watched, and I've watched maaaaaany.

Great movie. Not entirely sure why none of Paul WS Anderson's other films show the same degree of effort and skill. I mean, yes, the Resident Evil movies are nice little earners but there's no reason why he couldn't have made them something like as good.
