If you are looking for hidden gems you should definetely check out Jim Jarmusch movies. They are great but not for everyone because of very slow tempo and lots static camera shots.
I recommend:

Down by law (1986) - great black and white drama/comedy starring John Luire, Tom Waits and Roberto Benigni.

Dead man (1995) - Black and white western starring Johnny Depp. This one is probably not a good starting point since it is a very slow movie with lots of symbolism. Also a knowledge of William Blakes poetry would be good for this one.

Ghost dog: the way of samurai (1999) - crime comedy starring Forest Whitaker. This one is Jarmuschs most "mainstream" movie but still has some "art film" elements.

Limits of control (2009) - Thriller starring Isaach de bankole. Very very slow movie with very little plot and dialogue.

I'l tell you a film. My favourite film of all god damn time.

Let The Right One In.

And don't let the fact that it's a vampire film scare you away because of Twilight or anything, it's an amazing and emotional film. :)
