so I want to ask and to especially ask anyone who has been in the room when the decision to change the plot of a game when making a film WHY?! what is the reason TELL ME!
Because video game plots and characters are boring, worthless, tepid garbage written for children and teenagers that only gets a free pass due to the pitifully low standards of the target audience. Anyone trying to make a decent movie from a game would have to be clinically insane to not change the plot.

At the end of the day. you can't make trifle out of dog turds, no matter how hard you try.

Of course, the fact that nobody really gives a shit is also a factor.
on a game website and hating games... ladies and gentlemen i present to you..... THE MISSING LINK!
I don't hate games. I just despise 99% of game stories.

Bear in mind a game with a shit story can still be enjoyable.
OK first of all a list:

mass effect

kotor

god of war

dragon age

assassins creed 2

infamous

jade empire

and second of all im going to address a common misconception on this thread, take any of those games strip away the gameplay and you still have a decent plot, not forgetting that you could include some of the better gameplay moments in the movie. I example the part in sands of time when the prince has to kill his own father, tell me that wouldn't have been good in a movie. really most boss fights would do well in a movie as long as you didn't over use it, and if you remove all the gameplay that's unnecessary to the plot you still have room for the character development movies demand, while leaving in the action a movie based on an ACTION GAME demands

I've been disappointed thus far with game movies. I recon Red Dead Redemption could be easily transferred into a decent if fairly generic western.

The lara croft movies aren't too bad.

And according to rotten tomatoes the best videogame adaptation in a movie is:

The spirits within.
Must be some pretty low fucking standards.
I thought Spirits Within was neat, though it shouldn't have been titled Final Fantasy at all. Granted, I saw it when I was really young so perhaps the spectacle enthralled me.

In my opinion it's because the movie makers don't realise that a game shouldn't be followed trough it's story in the movie as closely as it was in the game, beacause a game is not a movie. If I would ever make a movie about a game, it would be some story placed in the world of the game, and maybe even referencing to the game content i'm basing the movie upon sometimes, but not at all about the plot in the game itself.

By the way, i'm sure someone has already pointed this out, but you realise that an Extra Punctuation has been just released with the name ''Why Movie Adaptations of Games Suck''?

I like a lot of movie adaptions of games, and by "like a lot" what I really mean is "Anything but Uwe Boll, dear god anything but that." I think they change the plot so they can at least throw in a little originality, something new to not make it boring for the fanbase.

you cannot play a movie.

simple as that.
Um... pretty sure that's exactly what you do with movies you watch. You hit Play, and play them.

(Yes, I know what you mean, don't give me that look!)

One of those, by the hand of he things. Or just pure timing.

Or those pillocking Oscars, those sefritious, simple-minded, egotistical, aragont....... sorry about that.
As a film student, I smile and aplaued. As someone sane, I fail to see the point [Oscar rant over]
