So, my friends and I got to see The Desolation of Smaug today... and, just to cut it short, I was the only one in the group that hasn't seen An Unexpected Journey beforehand... I originally was going to wait until the Hobbit trilogy came out on extended blu-ray and just marathon it like I did with the extended LOTR trilogy... Sure, I still remember how The Hobbit book went and already knew the reason why this was put into three movies, but considering what my friends thought of TDOS compared to AUJ, I kinda have an idea of what mindset to have once I see An Unexpected Journey... (even though I'll still be watch the extended version, anyway...)

Which got me thinking that this wasn't the first time I saw a movie out of its sequential/original order... I remember seeing Resident Evil: Apocalypse and X-2 in theaters before watching their prequel movie... I even saw Army of Darkness way before watching the original Evil Dead movie and Evil Dead 2...

So, has any of you seen a movie "sequel"[footnote]The reason for the quotations is because this can also apply to remakes and reboots... like Titanic or King Kong...[/footnote] before its original and/or prequel (unless it's Star Wars, then it would be like watching one of the prequel movies before one of the original movies, I guess)? I guess this can also apply to episodic shows (or shows that have time progression/continuity), when you think about it...

I saw Fright Night 2 before the original.

Was rather surprised that anyone bothered rebooting that.

Honestly...not really.

I am a HUGE stickler for some reason when it comes to spoilers and viewing in the "proper" order. Unless it's something that I just don't care about (like "Everybody Loves Raymond" where I'll just watch whatever is on TV when I'm bored) or if the sequels have nothing to do with each other (like Final Fantasy or the James Bond series), I do my very very very best to watch/play/read/whatever in the correct order.

Hell, if a prequel comes out for a series that I haven't experienced, I will usually go after the prequel in it's proper order in the story (For example: The Wheel of Time started in 1990 but had a "Book 0" written in 2004; I didn't read the series until 2012 and therefore book 0 was my first read since it took place before the others even if it was written later).

The only one I can remember is Code Lyoko, but I came in about half way through the first season when there still really wasn't much of an overarching story at the time, and even then I eventually got around to watching the earlier episodes before the overarching story began to materialize towards the end of the first season. Other than that, I'm quite adamant about starting from the beginning, even to the point of avoiding a movie night with friends if they want to watch one in the middle.

I've seen every episode of Seinfeld ever made. Just not in order. I actually watched a few seasons chronologically and I was surprised by how much continuity there was between episodes, like jokes that wouldn't make sense if you hadn't watched the last one or two eps or just plain references.

I haven't, but I plan to show my children the Star Wars movies in the machete-order. That is:

1. Episode IV: A new hope
2. Episode V: The Empire strikes back
3. Episode II: Attack of the Clones
4. Episode III: Revenge of the Sith
5. Episode VI: Return of the Jedi

Yup, episode I completely cut out, like the miserable POS it is. In depth reasons here:

The Evil Dead series was one for me as well.I saw Army of Darkness way before Evil Dead 2, and it was even longer after that when I saw the first Evil Dead.

The only one I can think of is that I saw The Return of The King without having seen The Two Towers beforehand. I more or less understood what was going on even as a kid, so I don't think it was that big of a deal.

I actually made a point of NOT doing this when I decided to sit down and watch Wrath of Khan for the first time. I actually went back and watched the episode of TOS that Khan first appeared in before watching the movie. By the way, that episode is kind of fucked up. Khan repeatedly verbally and physically abuses a female crew-member of the Enterprise, so she... falls in love with and decides to marry him? Oh, hello 1960's backwards values. Long time no see, how are you?

I mean sure, Khan in the movie really mourned her off-screen death, but then that movie was made quite a few years later.

Death Note. I started watching it right after...
Light threw out the Death Note and he ceased being Kira. To be exact, it was the episode where Light and L got into a fistfight while handcuffed. Because of this, I thought Light was being honest when he kept insisting that he wasn't Kira. Cue my "Oh shit" reaction when Light got the Deathnote back and killed L. Oh, how naive I was.
In all honesty, I'd say that watching it when I did made the show more exciting, even if the earlier episodes were still pretty good (from what I remember anyways - I have become a lot more cynical since then, so who knows if I'd still enjoy them).

Saw Matrix 3(dont know if that's the proper title) with some friends without having seen the other movies before. Got a quick summary and ended up not understanding shit.
Also saw Terminator 2 several times on TV before I saw the first one. Left me quite disappointed tbh.

It's a book series instead of a movie or show but I read the Darren Shan series of twelve books in a completely random order since I borrowed the books from the library and it was pot luck which were present on any particular week. It was interesting since an earlier book would often explain how situations I had already read about in later books came to pass.

For actual TV shows, I've only ever seen individual Inbetweeners episodes so although I've seen most by now, they've tended to be in a random order. Same with the Big Bang Theory actually. Both are fairly episodic though and only have a very loose ongoing plot, so it doesn't really matter.

Although it isn't a movie I did play Final Fantasy X-2 before X.
Might be why I think X-2 is better in every way.

When shows like Friends and Fraiser first aired, I didn't watch them straight away and once I did started watching it was in season 2 (The One with Phoebe's Husband). I have no idea which Fraiser episodes was the first one I watched but I know it ain't season 1!

My wife and I saw Serenity before we saw Firefly. There was a big gap in between, so when we went back to see Firefly, we had to see Serenity again.

When I got into Star Wars as a kid I actually started out of order. I saw Empire Strikes Back first, then A New Hope, then Return of The Jedi.

Then there was Gundam Wing. When I first started watching it, the very first episode I actually saw was the final episode. Needless to say I had no idea what was going on, but it kept my interest enough for me to stick around for when the series started again from episode one(good ol' Toonami).

I started watching DBZ near the end of the Frieza saga.

Doctor Who was another show I watched out of order. I saw Rose first(because I wanted to see the first episode to get an understanding of the series), but then the person who was showing it to me had me watch 'Blink', 'Silence In The Library/Forests of The Dead' and 'Midnight' in one sitting. After that I was hooked.

I saw the series 1 finale of Game of Thrones before seeing them all (and reading the books) in order. It's a pity, I would have liked that moment to sneak up on me.

I seem to only do that with anime series... even the more random ones where you can watch them in any order... I even go as far as just buying complete season box sets in order just to make sure I see it in the order it was released, at least...

Though I still feel any kind of prequel that comes out after the original needs to be viewed after said original, mostly because I feel the prequel tend to spoil more than the original... (like Kingdom Hearts 1 and Birth By Sleep...)

The only book series I kinda read out of order was the Artemis Fowl series where I read Book 3 and 4 before finding out which one was actually the first book... But, it's been a long time since I read that series, so I only remember wondering why they weren't numbered or something like that at the time...

And even though I started watching Big Bang Theory around 2011, I only watch the current episodes and have avoided any of the earlier episodes for some reason... (It's probably because I tend to compare the current episodes with the older episodes whenever I do end up watching a show out of it's original released order...)

I have never heard of this way of viewing those movies, but it sounds like the most beneficial after quickly looking it up...

I remember starting to watch DBZ during the middle of the Frieza saga... I remember that vividly because I was watching Toonami with my grandma and we would usually tune in to Sailor Moon or Tenchi Muyo... (mainly Tenchi...)
