Movies That Were Better Than The Book

Hey there fellow escapists.
Are there any movie adaptations you liked more than the original book/comic? Why?
I personally liked the Kick-Ass movie more than the Kick-Ass comic.
I felt more engaged in the story, the action scenes seemed "cooler", and I liked the comedy early on that wasn't so much there in the comic.

The Godfather... That is all.
Movies have that ability to make you engage better, Watchmen is one i hold in high regard; i prefer the movie adaptation just because i found the characters easier to understand, that coupled with the writing and direction made me really love the cinema's take on the franchise.
I will forever love the Scott Pilgrim comics over the film though... <3

Lord Of The Rings - it feels like sacrilege to say it, but there's an awful lot in the books that a good editor would have cut out. We didn't need eleven pages of Elven song, or Tom Bombadil (at all). Peter Jackson cut what needed to be cut and made the whole vision much more compelling.

Lord of the Rings. I'm going to get hate for this, but the story was just more... I don't know, connected. And Aragorn had a much better motivation- in the book, he wanted to be king basically because it was his birthright, while in the move he did it for his love.

Books were still brilliant, though. I just think the movies were better.

Howl's Moving Castle. It's my favorite movie but not my favorite book.
The film is very different from the book, especially in the second half and I prefer it.
The book isn't bad though.

The Bourne Supremacy and Ultimatum. The Identity was about even between the book and the movie (though very different). The books were among Ludlum's worst, and made me glad he didn't normally write trilogies.

Blade Runner. I know it's not a direct book-to-film but the movie just illustrated the scenery and the feel so much better and the characters were better (at least I thought so)

I thoroughly enjoyed the movies and can't wait for the Hobbit movies but I have to disagree, not to say you aren't allowed to have your own opinion. I can definitely respect someone who says how they feel even if they know it has a strong potential to upset fans of Tolkien. Bombadil was by far, my favorite character, in fact that whole period when they first leave Hobbiton until they get to Bree is IMHO the best part of the first book. I tend to agree with you on the Elven songs though, I completely skip over those parts now. I think there was a lot I would have loved to have seen and could have been added in Jackson's vision of LotR, which is why I will always love the book more.

Jaws is a well-worn example of this. The film eschew unnecessary scenes, like the mayor's mod ties and Matt Hooper's affair with Chief Brody's wife.

Jurassic Park springs to mind first and foremost.

the first of of Children of the corn was really good. then I'm only going ot assume that the people involved where all struck with a temporary mental disability cause it went bad int he second half.

and I have to say the First Blood rambo movie.

The one part I did like was the expanding on Project Mayhem's reach, how they trapped the narrator on the bus in the book.

V for Vendetta
The comic was weird and muddled while the film was an amazing anarchistic powerhouse.
That, and Hugo Weaving was incredible in it.

Watchmen - see above comment.

Stardust. Just read the book, then watch the movie and yeah...Stardust.

I also enjoyed Parts 1 and 2 of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows more than I enjoyed reading the book, but that's probably just because I've never been a good reader, and I'm better at processing information if it's visual.

Definitely gonna go with the Scott Pilgrim movie over the comics. Pretty much esthetic was an improvement: pacing, joke structure, characters, and the battles. The movie stripped out a lot of pointless bullshit and told the story in an altogether better way. Not to disparage the comics in any way, the noir is just supperior in my opinion.
