Hmmm, well to name a few: Wrist Cutters: A love story... Cashback...
I'm just surprised as Hell to see these get a mention. Wristcutters was flawed but enjoyable. It had some nice touches and it had Tom Waits in it which is awesome enough. I wouldn't say it's a particularly good film but I liked it. Cashback though is actually one of my favourite films.

As for me? Hmm... I have Death to Smoochy on DVD, I'm sure that counts as it's a film that was pretty much universally panned - and with good reason - but I like it.

Can't think of anything else right now.

Let's see... Space Jam, Looney Tunes: Back in Action, Speed Racer, The Fantastic Four (not the sequel, though), Transformers, Pirates of the Carribean, Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, The Dukes of Hazzard, Wild Wild West, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen...

What? I have strange tastes...

(Also, who in their right mind could hate a movie like Spaceballs or Monty Python and the Holy Grail?! Blasphemy, I say!)

Skyline

Almost every single person I know was absolutely scathing, but they were criticising exactly the kinds of things people complain about in "yay america" sci-fis.

They watch ID4, and they hated the unrealistic rubbish, eg:
"why can a f-18 shoot down a vastly superior alien space ship?"
"why can will smith basically one-hit-kill an alien in combat suit?"
"wtf is the president doing flying a fighter plane?!"

Then they saw Skyline, and complained reverse:
"no way could that house sized alien take a bazooka! it's made in the US of A!"
"what the hell?! they killed Turk from Scrubs!? That's illegal!"
"the ending was stooopid. Humans would have kicked alien arse."
"ps. USA, USA, USA!"

Skyline presented a thoroughly plausible version of alien invasion - you gonna get raped, and no matter how hard you try, you might as well just pass them the lube and think of happier times.

HAHAHA I thought i was alone on this one... I watched it with a whole group who cracked it and said pretty much all you did and my one response was... 'vastly superior race invades earth, what did you think was going to happen?'
What actually happens in Skyline? Does everyone die? D':

OT: Equilibrium. I thought it was a really compelling dystopic story that isn't too far from plausibility.
mmm I would answer but I am not sure how to put the code for 'spoiler alert'

incidentally I am a HUGE fan of equilibrium.

The Star Wars prequels. I recognise just how bad they are, but I can't help but love them anyway.

X-Men: The Last Stand, never thought it was bad as comic book fans claim it is.
Maybe I just have bad taste.
tough call on this one for me... I was sooo peeved to see a couple of things unfold...I like it as a separate movie all on its own and not as a part of a trilogy. I definitely keep it filed under L so as not to sully the others in the collection.

which reminds me!!!

The highlander movies!!! They made no effort at all to try and make any kind of continuation of the story other than to link it to the first one... kinda like a choose your own adventure :p

I dont know anyone who actively doesn't like it but considering how badly it did at the box I suppose it works on this list

I'm gonna say "End of Evangelion", because when me and my friends watched it I was the only one that saw it as the jewel it was! And the others can go fuck themselves...

...pretty sure I'm the only one here who's actually watched it though...
You'd be surprised how many anime fans there are here. Did your friends see the TV series? If not, that's probably a big part of why: no way in hell they'd have been anywhere near attached enough to the characters for the film to be effective. Still, I'm surprised they didn't at least pick up on how well executed a lot of the sequences were, even if only on an intellectual level. After all, the first clip I ever saw of anything related to the franchise was Asuka's demise, and that was very effective even without knowing who the hell the girl in the red mech was.
My friends did watch the TV series, (and really liked it... NGE is such an underrated anime!), but when watching EoE there was a lot of "WTF?" moments... which isn't all that uncommon with NGE...

...plus they're all huge Rei fanboys, and they were seriously pissed the end! I'm more of an Asuka fan myself though...

But it doesn't really matter, because the reinvention movies kicked ass!

Ghosts of Mars. It wasn't fantastic or anything, but I've seen far worse films that people flock to like they were giving out free blowjobs.

2012.

Movie seems to catch a lot of flak. I know it's completely over the top and implausible as all get-out, but it's a big, loud, dumb movie that's also got some wicked special effects. Watching LA get torn apart in the beginning never really gets old.

I don't get Rei's fandom... NGE isn't so much underrated as it is divisive: the people that hate it, hate it, and it's hard not to be annoyed by them because NGE is such an easy show to internalize without realizing it. Anyway, I'm kind of like your friends in that while I absolutely love the series, I didn't really care for EoE, not because of WTF moments, but because despite many of its individual components being nothing short of genius, I didn't think it functioned too well as a film. I see where you're coming from though.

And yes, Rebuild is totally fracking awesome.

I hate that movie, but for reasons that have nothing to do with its quality, and everything to do with watching it in a really uncomfortable bio lab chair and being totally creeped out for some reason I still don't quite understand. Still, not a bad movie.

Independence Day.

Well, maybe it's not that other people don't like it, but the movie is rated very highly. So it's basically of the same thing.
