I am not avant garde enough to know of films that nobody else has heard of but off the top of my head three films I quite like that seem to generally draw blanks from people would be:-

Instant swamp
Stickmen (not matchstick men)
Twins effect

But whats all the comments on Battle royale? its one of the most famous asian films out, along with the ring.

Oh heres two `Futtocks end` and `a home of your own` two old silent films (well not silent no one speaks but there are sound effects) starring Ronnie Barker (with others) and pretty good too.

Night of the Day of the Dawn of the Son of the Bride of the Return of the Revenge of the Terror of the Attack of the Evil, Mutant, Alien, Flesh Eating, Hellbound, Zombified Living Dead Part 2: In Shocking 2-D

It's a cult movie.
It is awesome.
It even warranted a sequel.

Not unknown as in 'underground', but unknown as in 'great old film no-one of my generation has seen' would have to be Dog Day Afternoon:

Al Pacino and the always-awesome John Cazale at their best, and one of Sidney Lumet's most underrated films.

Mine is a famous movie but non of my friends seem to have seen it. Donnie Darko. Takes a while to understand but it's awesome!
The philosophy of the movie is that if you say you get it, then you don't get it.
Do you get it?

Anyone here heard of this Italian film "Cinema Paradisco"? It sort of like Forrest Gump but replace the real world and famous people references with the history of cinema films.

Also this Korean movie "My Sassy Girl" has got to be the best romantic comedy ever (steer clear of the Hollywood remake trash version of it).

Hmmm, well, Oldboy is a kickass Japanese movie about a man who gets kidnapped and imprisoned for over a decade without being told why, only to be suddenly released and he has to find out why it happened to him.

Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Gex2NXTuL4

Trilogy: One, Two, Three is a trilogy of French films that are, umm, hard to explain, but here goes.

One is a thriller about a political bomber on the run after he escaped from prision. Two is a comedy about a man who becomes increasingly paranoid about his health and whether the mafia are stalking him. Three is a melodrama about a police officer who has a girlfrind on drugs.

All three are, as you can see, different stories, but interact with each other in interesting ways. It's pretty cool. There was a litte one screen cinema near where I used to live that would show foreign films. I remember going in there thinking "Ohh, french comedy eh? This'll be as funny as a kick in the nuts, no doubt." Ended up crying with laughter by the end though.

(Trying to find a trailer for an obscure french film is a pita, so http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucas_Belvaux the three films are the 2002 ones.)

If you're into horror, I'd recommend "A Tale of Two Sisters". About two sisters coming home after spending years in an asylum after witnessing their mothers death, only to start having strange visions, and they can't tell if they're real or just going slowly mad. It's scary as hell.

And if you're into movies so unbelievably terrible that you can't stop watching them, DNA is like the alpha/omega of hilariously awful sci-fi. Golden Ninja Warrior/Ultimate Ninja/Ninja Terminator, if terrible kungfu movies are more your thing. :)
Oldboy is South Korean actually. And yes, it is fucking kickass.

OT: The only one I can think of is Porco Rosso. There are probably quite a few that's heard of it, since it's a Miyazaki film, but it's one of his lesser known ones.

An Apt Pupil. A slightly racist yet intelligent white kid discovers that his next door neighbour is a gestapo officer who was involved in the holocaust. It's quite interesting how it all pans out...

Survive Style 5+ - it is weird and crazy but nevertheless brilliant and I have yet to meet someone who heard of this movie before I told them about it.

You have probably all heard of it but the movie Jumper. A lot of people seem to think it was mediocre but I absolutely loved it. Possibly because I would kill to have that power.

The Call of Cthulhu [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0478988/] - It's a short, 47 minutes long, black and white silent film. If you're an H.P. Lovecraft fan, it's a must see, definitely one of the best adaptations.

The Clinic - This film is an Aussie thriller-horror mix, starring Tabrett Bethell & Andy Whitfield. The year is 1979, a couple is spending a night at a seedy motel, the pregnant wife is abducted and finds herself in the middle of a nightmare. I know, it doesn't sound very original, but it kept me on the edges of my seat the whole time, with a lot of suspense and some really good scares. Tabrett's acting is excellent but the rest of the cast is good too, the musical score is great, so is the cinematography, and the story has some really nice twists. The film had a low budget but it still looks good, keeping that in mind.

Shadow Puppets - not a great film, but it has Tony Todd being creepy, and for eyecandy there is Jolene Blalock, along with most of the cast, including Natasha Alam from True Blood, spending a lot of time wearing panties and a tanktop, and it's cold. :)

Hmmm I will have to go with my favorite movie from my childhood, The Shadow. Great movie, though now that I think of it, I haven't seen it in quite a long time. I should fix that lol
I love that film too! :)

"The Man from Earth". It's my favorite movie, and it's amazing, low budget but amazing.
Agreed, I recommend it too. And unlike some others, I think the song at the end fits perfectly.

I really enjoyed the French animated film "Persepolis," and the Korean film "Mother." No one has really seen those, but I highly recommended them.
I've seen the former which I really enjoyed and I'm suprised to see people posting the likes of Donnie Darko and Oldboy as I really like those films as well but never would have called obscure. Now then:

-_- For your sake, I'm going to ignore that. Since this seems to be a pretty international community I think I'll nominate a few British films that people may not have heard of:

Red Road
Fish Tank
Shallow Grave
Naked
Nil by Mouth
This Is England
Four Lions

Hm, British films? Let me join you by mentioning two others: The Baker and Much Ado About Nothing, which is part of the ShakespeaRe-Told mni-series, both starring Damian Lewis.

I've really been enjoying the responses to this thread! I definitely going to check these movies out!

Now, while we're on the subjects of movies nobody has heard of, even though it was never released (IMdB says it's set for a 2009 release but it's still in post production, last updated March 2010. Yeah, that pretty much means it's dead.), I think that a movie called "Abundant Sunshine" deserves a mention. It's about a seemingly regular Texas guy who likes to film everything ... including the people he murders, all of which is seen through the videotapes he recorded. Sort of like "Blair Witch Project" meets Ted Bundy.

Here's the trailer:

I think it's interesting. I guess they ran out of money. <:-/

HA! I saw that movie! :D I liked it! And the black guy who says he's really JFK with part of his brain missing is classic!
