That title must be a little confusing, because many of you must be thinkig: "Well, duh, if you like a movie you like, if you don't, then don't. As simple as that." I'm talking about those cases it really isn't as simple as that. I have two examples:

Zoom is the usual case of "this was way better when I was a kid", but surprisingly a lot about it holds up in my opinion, I love the story, the superpowers, the comedy, the setting, there are things to be enjoyed. And yet there are things that I despise about it such as the acting (and I'm not talking about the children) and the tone really shifts back and forth, this is more noticeable in the climax as they have serious moments of coming of age, followed by slapstick comedy immediately. I'm on the fence of this one.

Next up, Jupiter Ascending after watching this one I didn't know what to think, I loved the setpieces, but the story's a mess; I loved the technology and architecture [like seriously, it's beautiful to look at], but the actors don't seem invested; I liked the premise and other things such as the rocket skates and the "animals", sadly dragged down by the 'chosen one'-style narrative and a character that may come off as Mary Sue the more you think about it. It managed to create an universe I was on board with, but it didn't do much interesting with it, add to that the overuse of exposition and the outright ridiculous attempts at comedy and you've got a mess interesting to look at.

This is less about their quality and more about personal taste. If you ask me if I like either of them, my answer will be neither a yes, nor a no. There are things that I like, but the sum of their parts does not create something appealing, and as someone who maths for a living that's a mindblowing achievement. So I'm left scratching my head about what made disappointed, yet wanting more with those.

What about you? Is there a movie out there you simply cannot decide if you like it or not? If so which one and why?

Star Wars. All of them. I want to like them, I tried but it doesn't gel with me one bit.

I personally liked the technology, the mythos behind it, the whole story of the Abrasax family and their relationship with their mom, such a shame that did not translate well in movie form.

The Expendables. Now I know they're silly. Really REALLY silly. Like a coffee cup trying to convince a Kitten that Adventure Time is this generation's Batman Animated Series silly. Its every action hero for 30 years saying their best 1-liners over and over and just murdering everyone in site and hot chicks with belly tattoos really wanting you to know they have belly tattoos....And they're just so boring. I just glaze over.

I should be doing shots, riffing them, laughing at the absurdity of Jackie Chan, Harrison Ford and Arnold Schwarzenegger arguing over who shot first and who's on first...but its like watching your little sister's 3rd grader play. You couldn't care less and really want to go home and play Conker's Bad Fur Day.

To be honest, the movie felt as if it was based on a YA novel, and that's why it didn't work in movie form--the Wachowskis tried to fit too much book into too little running time. I know it's not actually based on a book, but it still felt that way.

So movies we're ambivalent about, or movies that our tastes point towards that we don't fully engage with?

I have a lot of those, but one I've been thinking of lately is Everyone Else by Maren Ade. It's a smart, very dour relationship film about two people who are so thoroughly unlikable, I just couldn't care. I just wanted them to be away from each other. It's one of those films that says something true but unsavory, and left me thinking if it was even worth exploring.

I've been thinking about rewatching it lately because I saw Ade's latest film, Toni Erdmann, and thought it was great. Makes me wonder if I'm missing something.

Avatar. The idea is interesting and the visuals are great... but the story is both kinda cliche and rather preachy for my tastes.

...Why are we getting an Avatar theme park again?

Texnolyze. I really like the creators. Their the same team that made one of my favorite anime series, Serial Experiments Lain. But it's just so boring. The pacing is awful, and nothing seems to happen. The characters are dull. I can't follow the story. The visuals are all brown and grey. I hear that the second half of the series is amazing, but my eyes glaze over and I never make it that far. It feels like is twice as long as it needs to be. One day I would like to finish it, but damn.

Blade Runner. So many people tout it as a sci-fi masterpiece, and while I thought it was visually spectacular, the film as a whole was pretty rubbish. Story wasn't very good, a lot of the dialogue was nonsensical (and not in the 'deep' kind of way) and Harrison's character was simply unlikable. I did watch the recent directors cut and not the original, but I don't think it would improve it that much.

Not a movie, but the anime Monster. The concept is so bloody interesting, yet the execution is so hokey.

Its a 74 episode anime?

By what episode did it lost its way in your opinion?

I think the directors cut is the definitive edition. The original has Deckard driving away into the sunset having a monologue. It's...not the best ending.
The worst I can say about Bladerunner is it can be a little slow.

OP: Hmmm, none come to mind. If I don't like a movie then I don't like it. I may say that a certain element was done well, but a movie is a sum of it's parts. I don't force it, that is disingenuous. If I begin to like it on repeat viewings though, that is cool. Pretty rare though.

I don't think it lost its way, I think it never really found its footing. The problem I had with it was that it's a very mature story, but the dialoge comes across almost like it's for children. I think I got to about episode 11 or 12, it's been a long time.

I don't think I've ever been impressed with a story as much as Texhnolyze. It's a slow burn for sure and it's contemplative nature don't take you by the hand for an exciting ride but it's social commentaries and character studies are just so damn interesting. It really plunges the depths of the human condition and it's absolutely harrowing. No story ever really fazes me but Texhnolyze..jeesh. Maybe you have to be a bit older to really appreciate this show. You really have to adjust your mindset to fully comprehend it's more abstract form of storytelling.

Anyways my personal pick would be Full Metal Alchemist(the second series I guess it is). Really enjoyed it but..just too many episodes. Another one would be Westworld. Wanted to like it but just can't get into it for some reason.

It's not Jackie Chan you speciesist dick. It's Donnie Yun-Fat.

In Time because if it just lost all pretense about being for "adults" and embraced the inherent cheese in its setting it could be a decent movie for kids that grown-ups could enjoy too.

Kingdom of Heaven the Director's cut, it's just beautiful to look at. Unfortunately the story and characters aren't that interesting.

Just curious, was the dub in english or japanese?

A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night

Utterly gorgeous movie to look at that I've been wanting to watch for ages. Turned out to be a very thinly told love story that lacked conflict or depth. I was kind of hoping for more out of a hispster Iranian vampire spagetti western.
