i know it sounds stupid because it is such a good movie but i just can't bring myself to recommend "a clockwork orange" because i think people will loook down on me because i like it

They don't know who Kubrick is. Besides i was thinking they would leave during the rape scene and dismis it as a porno or something like that

In which case you could inform them that this is the cinematic equivalent of not knowing who Winston Churchill is.

"Dismiss it as a porno" I don't see why. That's a tiny part of the film's running time.

It's a disturbing film, sure, and not for everyone, but it is one of the great undisputed movie masterpieces, after all. Shame should be the last reason you're not recommending it.

Even though it was one of the most confusing, non-sensical films I've ever seen, I enjoyed it. Unfortunately, I just can't see myself recommending it to anyone. I loved it, but I hated it. It's complicated =P

Also, I noticed that someone said Ichi The Killer. Why would you not recommend that? Is it because of the hideous amounts of violence? I've not seen it, but I want to, and I've heard lots about it.

The remake of The Hills Have Eyes. I love the film, but the mutant rape scene is a little much for many people.

Oh dear, that scene is just horrible. Yes, I could never recommend that, even though it wasn't a bad movie. Violence against women always makes me wince a little anyway, but rape scenes are just the worst.

I would never recommend Slent Night, Deadly Night. I thought it would be an entertaining, comedy Christmas film in the vain of Santa's Slay (which I recommend EVERYONE to see) but...no, it was just horrible. I couldn't even get through the first 30 minutes without feeling a little sick. It's not even THAT bad just...urgh.

I loved these movies, but I can imagine the awkward silence if I watched them with someone else.

Cause they're all fantastic films - hell, Watchmen is probably a close second favourite of mine - but...I couldn't recommend them to family, and my friends have all already seen them. And they're not great to watch WITH friends for...obvious reasons.

First movie that came to my mind. I found "Antichrist" very interesting, but it's kinda hard to really "recommend" someone a film filled with pornography, depictions of death, decay, and insane violence, all of the realistic kind. Oh, and misogyny, as some claim, though personally I don't really think "Antichrist" was misogynistic.

I'm glad I watched every movie I have seen, be they great or terrible. If I listed out every movie that I am glad to have seen but wouldn't recommend, I would lose over two hours of my life and no one would have the patience to read them all.

So, instead, I'm going to give you a title that I hated so much that I had to give it a high score but would never tell anyone to view it: Catherine Hardwicke's Thirteen. The story of two 13-year-old girls who peer pressure each other into diving into sex, drugs, and crime. It's a damn good film, don't get me wrong, but I hated the fuck out of it. It earns a 4 out of 5 score in my books thanks to a loophole in the way I score movies: the more emotion I feel during a movie, the higher its score. I will never watch it again and I do not recommend anyone else watch it, but I am still glad to have seen it.[/quote]

Seven Years in Tibet - I have trouble recommend a Brad Pitt movie to anyone, but being Buddhist, found the perspective & story interesting.

Johnny Mnemonic - I love William Gibson but hate Keanu Reeves. The movie appeals to my cyberpunk, Shadowrun days, but it's more of a personal appeal than anything.
