So I saw the PBS Idea Channel's video on the new Ms. Marvel and decided to check it out and I thought it was pretty good, I like the whole cultural identity it has going for it and that it doesn't shy away from getting too into the Muslim culture, so I enjoyed it quite a lot, so I wanted to know a few things.

What is your opinion of Kamala Khan the new Ms. Marvel and the comics so far?

There are several other heroes getting new versions besides Ms. Marvel such as Nova and Ghost Rider, what is your opinion of them, which of them are worth reading too?

I think it's interesting (and the fact that Ms. Marvel comics are outselling The Walking Dead in many countries is as well), but it seems that some are portraying this as something new, when really it's only a new wave of what has been happening in comics for decades now.

I also am not sure what you mean by which "is worth reading" given the nature of comics is that they span many genre and people tend to gravitate towards the ones which are well written and meet their interests.

For example, I love reading Ultimate Spider-Man, but I can't get into normal Spider-Man comics to save my life. I also am not a fan of the more supernatural comic book series or the Xmen.

Not my thing at all really.

Kamala Khan is a nice enough character but being neither from a religious family or a teenage girl, the personal issues don't really provide much interest for me.

Plus of course being so early in the titles life there hasn't been any real 'super' stuff to get into.

I'll give the book my standard five issues, or end of first arc to impress me, but I have a feeling it's going to be stuck on 'meh!'. Given the price of comics these days, being average simply isn't worth my money.

I think the fuss comes from the fact that the character is very relatable to the Internet generation and is a Muslim girl, I don't normally follow comics so I wouldn't know much, but I do know that the Internet loves to exaggerate things.

As for my question, well as I said I don't normally follow comics, so I guess I was wondering what other ones I should read since same generation heroes are likely to end up together at some point, so when that happens it would probably be better if I knew more than one of them, but as I said there are several so I wouldn't know where to start or which are simply new series of old heroes rather than new versions of old heroes, the only ones I'm sure are new versions are Ghost Rider and Nova, I think Moon Knight may be too and I know there's a recent version of Hawkeye which is supposedly pretty good, I guess I'm just to lazy to research it myself.

Only comics I really follow are Star Wars, but as a concept I like Kamala. Don't know anything about the new Ghost Rider, but I did see some of the art, and I don't really like the character design. What happened to the flaming skull and the motorcycle?

http://marvel.com/comics/issue/49488/all-new_ghost_rider_2014_1

Skull design looks like rejected Bleach fanart, and he drives a goddamn car. I don't even...

I see your point. I'd point to Ultimate Spider-Man when it went from staring Peter Marker to Miles Morales, who made it into mainstream news years back for being a half black, half Latino, and the writing is pretty good. Though no crossover will ever happen with Ms. Marvel due to them being in different universes.

The Ultimate Universe and 616 have crossed over a couple of times now so a Mile Morales/Kamala Khan crossover isn't impossible.

Don't you find it interesting or rewarding, personally or just as character narrative, to empathise and gain insight from another perspective, though?

Not read any of her stuff, but after reading various interviews with the creators, I very much like the concept and would like to see the MCU include her eventually, simply on principle (young female culturally Islamic superheroes aren't exactly commonplace, and the MCU is in need of more diversity).

Yeah it's probably too early to call yet with only 2 issues out now and yeah I guess she wouldn't be that relatable to white guys and perhaps even white girls who knows, but the way it seems to be making the whole cultural identity thing a main issue is really interesting to me, I don't live in a foreign country but I've never stayed in one place for long so I can relate to not being sure what your culture is and when I was a teenager I did wish I was white a couple of times, so I can personally relate to her character very well despite not being a teenage girl from a religious family or Pakistani, her being a pretty good character so far does help though.

To be honest I never really heard much about Miles other than he was half black, half latino, so I never really got curious to read it, maybe I should, I don't care that much for the crossovers so it doesn't really matter if it doesn't matter if it doesn't happen, however this whole multiple universe is confusing though, I wasn't aware that the new Ms. Marvel wasn't from the main universe, whichever that is, but apparently she isn't.

I see, this is why I normally don't read these sorts of comic books, just how many universes are there?!

The problem is what we have here is 'lite'. There simply isn't enough substance there to gather my interest. Will there be by the end of the arc? I certainly hope so as Marvel needs some popular new heroines instead of giving Black Widow her 600th shot at a solo book.

There are quite a few.

616 is the main Marvel Universe and I don't believe that the Ultimate Universe has a number designation. At least it doesn't on any of the lists I can find. Not even on the Marvel Wiki http://marvel.wikia.com/Multiverse/Universe_Listing.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ultimate_Marvel
Ultimate Marvel is an imprint of comic books published by Marvel Comics, featuring reimagined and updated versions of the company's superhero characters, including Spider-Man, the X-Men, the Avengers, and the Fantastic Four. The imprint was launched in 2000 with the publication of the series Ultimate Spider-Man and Ultimate X-Men, giving new origins for the characters. The universe has been designated as Earth-1610 within the Marvel Multiverse, which comprises an infinite number of alternate universes.

What a weird random number to choose, so she is from the main universe then...
Also Ultimate is 1610

Yes, she is from the main universe. The 616 designation comes from the Captain Britain comics, where the number was thrown around by some Britain Corp. member. The reason stems from the writer wanting to have a number, but not wanting to do like DC and use 1 or 2 or Prime. So instead he chose 616 as it's an alternate number of the devil (lesser known then the conventional 666).

At least, that's what I've learned from looking into it, but I honestly don't know with absolute certainty.

I just realized the devil connection while I was scrolling.

SEeing how the number of the beast is linked to the impurity of life and civilization, it works)

I'm just annoyed that they'd give Captain Marvel's identity to Ms. Marvel and her identity to some teenager.
Ms. Marvel is a mighty heroine all on her own accord. The idea that inheriting Captain Marvel's name somehow elevates her position is bullshit.
Similarly, Captain Marvel himself shouldn't just be over written, and some random teenager isn't remotely worthy of the mantle of Ms. Marvel.

Why couldn't they just let everyone keep their identity and give the new girl her own unique name? Is riding on Ms. Marvel's coattails the only way they thought she'd get any attention?
If she needs a "Marvel" moniker so badly, why not let her inherit Jean Grey's "Marvel Girl" name? Jean's too busy being Phoenix and/or dead to use it.

....anyhow...

New Ghost Rider looks utterly stupid. Terrible character design....and a car, no less. We've already got 4 Ghost Riders. We didn't need a 5th.

New Nova's alright. He's no Richard Rider, but Sam's cool in his own right. Not a bad Nova Corps uniform variant either.

Also, Miles Morales seems to be fairly decent as Ultimate Spider-Man. (gods know we've had an awful lot of different Spider-Men...)
I know 616 Peter Parker met Ultimate Miles Morales, and I think it was implied that there's also a 616 Miles Morales who will be showing up sooner or later.
So, if they wanted a team up with the new Ms. Marvel and a 616 Miles Morales, that might be possible sooner or later.

Yeah I liked her but I found it rather confusing that Carol is now Captain Marvel and that Kamala doesn't even seem to have the same powers, so it's a bit odd to me why she's even Ms. Marvel other than that "I want to be you" line, but as I said before the origin story hasn't been finished, it's still rather odd that she doesn't have her own alias.

Yea. Exactly.
It made sense for Mar-Vell, a Kree captain, to take the name Captain Marvel as a superhero on Earth.
It made sense for Carol to take the name Ms. Marvel after she accidentally ended up with a copy of Captain Marvel's powers.
But this girl is just a shapeshifter... She has more in common with Mystique, Morph, Mr. Fantastic, and the Super Skrull than with Ms. Marvel.

In fact, that's the real ironic silliness of this. The "Marvel" mantle belongs to Kree-powered heroes, and now a girl who has Skrull-like powers has inherited it. Derp.

Her taking the identity of Ms. Marvel would be like if Peter Parker took the identity of Captain America when Steve Rogers became Nomad or Commander of SHIELD.
A guy with spider powers running around calling himself Captain America just because he's a huge Captain America fanboy. ....that's stupid.
