The series underwent three morphs to have a total of four different themes in a 10 year period. It was low budget, low key, and pretty much had a small (relative) fan base.

This isn't to say I dislike the series. I quite enjoyed it and have sense bought every MST3K box set that they have released (1 - 12), of which some now are priced at over $200 / box, so I feel special in a way. Also I have "The Essentials" and "The Movie" to top off the collection thus far.

The only peeve I have with this, is that the box sets are not in order of air, so you never know which theme of the four you'll be watching.
Anyway I don't think MST3K was the best for its time or our time, but it was certainly a unique concept that had a lengthy run. -salute-.

While I absolutely love MST3K, I have trouble bestowing the title "Greatest _______ of All Time" to anything. I'm always hoping something greater will come along. I would say it's in the running for the title, at the very least.

Also, just a little side note...
Are you familiar with Rifftrax.com ? Even if you are, for the benefit of MST3K fans who will come here and aren't familiar, it's a site where you can download MP3 commentaries for DVD's of all sorts of movies (Terminator 3, Star Wars ep 1-3, X-men, etc...), and it's just like MST3K. Of course, if should be, since it's done by Mike Nelson (star of the later MST3Ks), most often with Kevin Murphy and Bill Corbet (Tom Servo and Crow!!!). If you didn't know, I hope I just made your year. ;) If you already knew, then I hope others go there and support them. Please no illegal downloads. Support them and keep 'em going!

Well, I've rambled on long enough!

Maybe not the greatest show of ours, or any time, but the only reason for movies like Manos The Hands of Fate to exist.

I would also like to second the opinion that the boxed sets should be put into some kind of farking order. That would be nice.

The real question here is what is the best episode of MST3K?

I really can't decide.

Also, Joel, or Mike?

I would have to say either Jack Frost or Space Mutiny, IMO

Also, Joel, or Mike?
I'm a bigger fan of Mike's style, and particularly his voice. Not to say Joel was bad at all, I just prefer Mike.

Great show, though like others it's difficult for me to bestow the "greatest of all time" title one much of anything(though I do stand with All In The Family as the greatest sitcom of all time I will say that). It really did not only breath some life into the wretched cinema of the past, it also brought on the ability for me to see the good in all movies, even if that good comes in mocking bad ones at every turn.

On the Mike and Joel front, I prefer Mike. I just think he put more energy into the role with the bots. Joel had his moments, but in the end, I'm just a Mike fan.

I love MST3K! They'd have a field-day on recent movies of the last decade!

Personally, I've always liked seasons 3-5 the most. The Sci-Fi channel episodes were very funny, but some of the changes were a little hard to swallow.

A part of me has always preferred Joel over Mike, but at the same time there's no denying how funny Mike was, so I honestly can't say who's better. If anything I prefer Joel's physical actions during the movie, say when an actress held a cigarette close to the screen and Joel would stand up saying "Can I light that for you, ma'am?" Simultaneously, Mike made up for that when he pulled a pool cue from under his seat and started playing pool on a table in one episode.

As far as specific preferences go, I must say I favored Trace as the original Crow over Corbett, mostly because his voice and puppeteering matched Crow's personality and physical actions; When Trace was around, Crow was jumpy, exciteable and even sounded like a kid at times (straight down to his signature giggle), but when Corbett was around, Crow was overly stiff and his voice just didn't sound like crow, KTMA days or Comedy Channel. Which isn't to say Corbett made that bad of a Crow, if anything was in his favor it was the many memorable riffs he made. "So, 'Rowsdower,' is that a stupid name..?"

MST3K seriously holds a special place in my heart. First of all, each episode is two hours long, so its almost not a TV show, its more like a great way to repurpose bad movies, but the characters are really good too, and the whole premise just rocks. Yea, I don't think I could apply the label of best show ever, or even of the 90's, but MST3K was definitely one of the most intimate shows of our time. By that I mean the characters were so damn likeable, and part of the premise was that they were talking right to you, so it really made me feel close [weird] to the characters. I love Southpark and the Upright Citizen's Brigade a lot too, but they never related to with the audience, which Joel/Mike and the bots did. And I prefer Joel, even though I was raised on Mike. Joel was just willing to do funnyshit, while Mike was a little more button down. Anyone seen the episode Pod People, and in one of the segments they recreate the scene where Trumpy goes all crazy and makes stuff fly around the room? When they do that on the Satellite of Love, its just beautiful, and Joel makes it work. Mike was a little more sarcastic which was cool. They both had their strengths, and I love them both, but I'm a Joel person.

I absolutely love MST3K - my personal favorite show of all time.

I think the real question here is: Why hasn't anyone ever done this for a video game? As in, recording a play-through of a game and overlaying their own commentary? I'd love to see this happen for a game like Daikatana.

Oh, I've always wanted to to do that, though the only games I can muster to make fun of consist of Countdown Vampires, Blue Stinger, Twisted Metal 3, the original Urban Chaos, Resident Evil Dead Aim and two games both involving the number 4 (with one of them having the number come before the title) that I'm sure that if I ever taunted online, I'd have mobs of game fans and reviewers coming after me.

Besides, I don't think many people would appreciate anyone else taunting games like Blue Stinger and Dead Aim which were only half decent (if not lower). I feel if you can't take the game's storyline and presentation seriously enough and/or the controls are horrible then it's worth taunting with the help of two friends, but that's really all within the eye of the beholder (I don't know about most you, but a game that proffers an instant three minute curing device for a parasite on an island infested with people trying to take over the world with said parasite, that is just begging to be made fun of ["Plot convenience playhouse presents..!"])

The Loading Read Run entry for the recent Escapist video fest was certainly a step in the right direction.

they have a new distributor for the dvds now. they said they would rerelease a bunch of stuff and hopefully in a better order

they just released a new box set for the 20th anniversary, it came in a nice tin with a Crow toy, tho it's kinda limited and hard to find

My friends and I gather every week to watch an episode. Funny stuff.

My favorite one is where they cover "The Creeping Terror"

The MST3K crew are a brilliant bunch. They somehow managed to trick me into watching Batman & Robin (Rifftrax). It took me abuot 3/4ths of the movie to realize I was watching Batman & Robin and should have been punished for it.

I faithfully tried to follow the show every Saturday even when Sci-Fi must have been trying to bury it by rearranging the schedule every other week. I've got to say that my favorite episodes are Prince of Space/Invasion of the Neptune men. "Due to the Apocalypse, cram school will be delayed by 45 minutes."
