I feel the same way. I won't play sometimes (like Mann vs machine) if I'm unfamiliar because I don't want to be harassed.

I know how OP feels, I was chased out of fighters cause I was a newcomer. It's gotton into real life as well, as I can't even play Magic or DnD.

Very rarely get anxiety for being bad at a game as I can pick things up quickly actually quite the opposite I get anxiety playing games with mates when i'm too good usually I beat them them one of them Beats me *sob*
But seriously I may hold up a team but I would rather suck than miss out on playing with mates.
I am a moderate player at RTS's and used to get slaughtered after five minutes now I can last a good 8 minutes before i'm wiped out see an improvment.

I'm the same - I tried playing L4D2 with strangers, as others have, and the first few games for me were all right, but then either everyone else got better or were cheating, or I just started sucking suddenly. Don't touch those modes anymore.

I can't play multi-player games like that without having a friend play with me, otherwise I just freak out.

I have a similar problem, but reversed, in a way. I can't handle playing in a 1v1 situation, where it is just me against some stranger, because if I lose there is no doubt in my mind that it is because I failed and my opponent outplayed me. That is part of the reason why I quit Starcraft 2, I just couldn't take it anymore, and 2v2, 3v3, 4v4 are not as good.

However when playing team games, such as Dota 2, I used to play MW2/3 etc., I have no such anxiety. Even if the team loses, it's rare for ALL the blame to be on one person, and even if I end up in such a situation(which I do not think I have), it's better than carrying all the blame every single time you lose.

It's just a game.
Most people don't care if you suck.
I suck at cod but I still play.
Anyone who would give you grief for not being as proficient as them is taking it way too seriously
I think this is mostly true. Sometimes when I play COD or BF3 and I top my team chart in terms of K/D or score but lose anyway, I tend to get angry at the game for not making balanced teams going in, rather than just getting angry at my teammates. I feel like until games can make balanced teams on a consistent basis, this problem will continue.

On the other side, when I play Halo, where I'm not as good, I do feel the pressure to contribute to the team, especially when I play with my friends. I think this is true for all competitive team sports for me, though.

Speaking as someone who is afraid of failure multiplayer games are a great way to address this fear. Yes, you will fuck up sometimes, and yes some people may call you out on your blunder. You will feel like shit and want to die inside, but if you continue you will learn to cope with failure. Mold it into ways to succeed next time.

Thats why I love multiplayer, its a healthy way to cope with one of my greatest fears. Also, when you do something right the feeling is intense. I remember in BF 3:

Players took the 2 tanks and heli so I was stuck with a jeep. I followed behind the tanks in the jeep heading down hill. There was 2 enemy tanks in front of us. Our tanks took out 1 of the enemy tanks before we lost one of our tanks and the other one chickened out. I kept going straight for the enemy tank in the jeep as explosions went all around me from the remaining tanks fire. I jumped out of the jeep right as it hit the tank, the jeep blew up disabling the tank. I threw a grenade at the tank coincidentally as the enemy players were getting out of the tank and blew them all up along with the tank.

Those are moments that make the failure worth while, because it can make you look badass.

I think it is somewhat common. I mean when I first started playing Guild Wars Fraction, I was shy when I had to join a party for the first time for a hard mission I can't do alone. This was also a similar case with a mate who also got shy when this quest require you to join another player to do the quest.
