By being in human form, you have accepted any an all chances of invasion in return for the ability to summon phantoms to help you through the game. Don't complain when you get invaded, it is your own fault. By using invasion items, people are seeking pvp and being linked with your 'request' rather you ment to or not. That being said, well known pvp areas such as the forest, burg, and kiln are almost never used for just pve. Just remember, if you gank or heal, all rules go out the window.

I remember Republic Commando multiplayer having strict rules about what weapons one could use. The DC-17m anti-armour attachment, the Trandoshan Heavy Repeater, the Wookie Rocket launcher - all off-limits. Anyone who dared to defy this rule was named a noob, and lambasted by all.

PVP is dull and boring in DS?

It is the unspoken, but ever present rule of dueling in Dark Souls that every duel begin with some kind of gesture in greeting.
So unspoken a lot of people don't know about it and don't follow it.

It is also understood no lagstabbing and no Estus (though it never seems to stop people doing it).
If it doesn't stop people from doing it, it's not really understood.

If you want to live by those rules, fine. Just keep in mind others do not.

Even my own cardinal rule of "do unto others" is not widely treated as a rule by others.

If you don't like it, steer clear of PVP. Most of the time, I do just that.

I hate the idea of a lot of these. It REALLY favors certain strategies and doesn't acknowledge that all weapons take skill. That said, spawn camping is a dick move. Don't do it. Don't team kill. Don't harass the other players (spamming team chat or constantly clicking the map in LoL).

My 100 rules for all FPS'

Rules 1-99: Thou shalt NOT CAMP!

Rule 100: Take the killstreaks out of the game, they encourage camping (mostly applies to Call of Duty MW2 onwards)

When I play Halo 4, I never kill players who are assassinating or being assassinated by someone.
Not that anyone else follows this rule, except for this one bloke with a Sticky Detonator.

Ehh... the last time I got invaded in Dark Souls it was in the Depths, near the bonfire. Some bastard ran up to me, instakilled me with that fire-pillar spell and then did the 'come at me bro' gesture. I was not impressed.

I've gone up about 50 levels since then though. I think I'd stand a better chance this time ^^

If two cloaked spies bump into each other in TF2, you do not acknowledge them presence, try and follow them, or give them away. You just keep on going as if it never happened. I don't even know how this rule even came about, but pretty much nobody ever breaks it. It's just part of the unwritten code of TF2 :D
err....what servers are you playing on? All the ones i play on when i play spy, when two spies bump into eachother, it is common courtesy for the two of them to run wildly around each other in ever decreasing circles, trying to hide their backs, and shooting at eachother's heads with the ambassador.

It is highly amusing to watch.

Unless it's Quake or any twitch based FPS, please camp, you're infinitely easier to hit.

Rules of engagement are useless. The first time I come across a guy not using them, my faith in it will be lost and just go to being a dick.

Playing fair is not an ideal strategy in any conflict.
Thats my rule for the most part. Use whatever is at your means to win.

Unless we are talking COD, in which case if you use any noob tactic and not a noob, you are a ****.

Imo the majority of fps' now have no real rules of engagement. That being said in a FFA match I have got the drop on a sniper who is totally engaged in his target, I'll usually let them finish their shot before I assassinate them. I have been on the flip side of that as well, where a player waits a second before they kill me. I can also recall in melee m/p games players waiting for a 1v1 fight to end and then attack the winner. I consider that to be some semblance of civility in a multiplayer games

In regards to the camping debate, I am all 'makes sense' camping. By this I mean if you're a sniper, by all means camp the hell out of that map, I know I do. As for the heavy machine gunner who is camping the corner of the stairwell or w.e, that is somewhat annoying, but if the player is dumb enough to stay there, he'll get a grenade when I get back there. I have to say in Battlefield 3 I am not noticing the number of dick campers that CoD has, so I enjoy that very much.

Oh dear GOD!!!

I dont think I can agree with you enough. Im almost positive that every problem that can be found in COD MP is related to the K/D ratio.

But if you are playing the honorable fighter thing then why engage in a 3-1 match, wouldn't you then work it out to go at it one on one...

For the most part these rules are meaningless without means to enforce them, and with match making the players usually get zero control over the numpties they end up with, on top of that with most games the skill ceiling is so low the troll shots can't be warded off.

That is why the best game for an honor code is still Jedi Outcast, there you had direct and indirect control over the server and a skilled player was near untouchable when he didn't want to engage you.
Near all players understood a few minutes in that shit was played with dignity, and those who kept on trolling around got torn to shreds.
You apparently missed the bit about it wasn't my idea in the P.S. I wasn't actively looking to gank dark spirits with the other two players, they were there to help with Manus Father of the Abyss. So this wasn't a case of bait and gank, it was just getting the spirit out of the way to move on. The point was after getting killed by being herded off a cliff the invader sent me a message calling me shit for getting him in a 3-1 fight. Keep in mind there was no imput on my part to this invasion so he was making himself out to be a whiny finger pointer. I replied, "Did I summon you? No. So stfu."

There are no Rules of Engagement in Dark/ Demon Souls When someone bows that's just a free BS.
Yeah this, it can be fun and polite and everything (I was completely into the whole 'bow politely and duel thing' when I played and platinumed Demon's Souls) but it's not required.

In Dark Souls I went full asshole because it felt so fulfilling.
Bowing means absolutely nothing, I've seen someone bow and than pull a TWoD glitch and bow again.

Bowing means nothing.

I don't have a lot to add, but I got to say people need to learn some Chivalry in, well, Chivalry. Free-for-All games are crowded with short-sword wielders who avoid fights at all cost, running around pot-licking and back-stabbing everyone else's glory. They always win.

Also, I feel it's quite dishonorable for one to behead me while I'm issuing a challenge with in-game taunts. Or shot in the throat, though one should never wager on an archer's honor.

I try to be polite about the whole bow thing when people invade me, but sometimes I start stabbing as they're bowing out of pure reflex, and then simply don't want to lose my momentum. I felt like a dick though.

For FIFA, if someone stops playing I will pass it out a couple of times (pauses the clock and gives them control) and give them a chance to come back. Any more than two or three, which is a good couple of minutes and more enough to go to the toilet/answer the door/find extra batteries, they're fair game.

Back when I played duels in Regnum Online (Don't judge me) I used to give my opponent a breathing room before rushing them down. As I played a Barbarian, it was then difficult to chase after a spell lobbing, or arrow shooting guy, but it gave me much more satisfaction that I prevailed. And don't be a dick to the one who lost, you already bested him, there's no reason for berating him too.

Also, don't cheat, etc., you know the whole thing.
