Yesterday, apparently during a drunken binge, 58-year old Irish guitarist Gary Moore died, while on a holiday in Spain.

Not only is this a tremendous loss for the music industry as a whole, as it always is when good talent passes away prematurely, this is also a loss for those (few) of us who may have been inducted to blues culture in the nineties through his subsequent return to his blues roots after a long time of being a primary rock guitarist.

Being a wee young 14-year old lad (two years ago <_<'), I picked up an old Gary Moore album while at my local record store, figuring I might as well try it out. This was my first blues record. Today, I've a shelf full of music from all generations, skin colors, and parts of the world, all exploring this old music style in all its shades. From B.B King to Joe Bonamassa, Gary Moore introduced me to what I today consider the humblest and most primal forms of music. I can say, without hyperbole or exaggeration, that Gary Moore and Joe Bonamassa were the two musicians who inspired me to pick up a guitar.

Gary, if you're not giving the angels -eargasms-, I will be very, very disappointed.

(And of course, I can't send this off before I add a video, can I?):

Real sad about this, though Blues For Greeny was only a cover album of Peter Green songs, it was still really good. He'll be missed.

I really hope that what music he made in life, stays as it is, and is not corrupted by some shitty band trying to make a cover of it as a "tribute"

He was truly a wonderful musician. Tsk tsk to those of you who haven't heard of him.

You're not the only one. Although the profit margins of releasing a single like this wouldn't be that high, since there aren't as many blues fans around as there used to be. I doubt any "big" artists or bands will want to pick this up unless they really want to pay respects to his music.

Yeah I tried to do an RIP Gary Moore thread yesterday. Didn't work, no one on here really cares.

But I do. He was an actual real inspiration to me, which makes this the first time someone who inspired me has died while I've been alive. Given my taste in music I get the feeling it's going to happen a lot in the next few years.

I suspect B.B King won't last long either. Although I really commend the spirit of that man, he's been playing guitar since he was what, 16, and he's in his mid-80's now? He's really starting to look old now, though. Although it is a shame that Gary Moore was only 58 on his death. That's the worst, to me, that he died at such a relatively young age.

Since when did popularity have anything to do with how good a musician is? I'm no rabid fan of Gary Moore, though I did like a few of his songs I don't own any albums, but as a guitarist myself I certainly admired his ability. It's people praising popularity over lack of ability that leads to you know, you have only yourselves to blame!

Aye, 'tis a sad day. Never listened to any of his solo stuff, but I do love a bit of Thin Lizzy.

Chuck Berry 84, BB King 85, Aerosmith are all over 60 now, Keith Richards and Mick Jagger are pushing 70, Bruce Springsteen is over 60. Heck, even people like Bowie and the Eagles are well into their sixties now.

It's not going to be a good few years for rock and roll.

Just heard about it too. He was one of my favorite guitarists. I started listening to blues because of him. Damn...

He will be missed.

Same here, I think I like it better than the Nightwish cover I heard before the original.

Man, I remember when I would listen to Over The Hills and Far Away at a ridiculously loud volume while reading Transmetropolitan. Good times.

Actually it's only a loss for his little corner. If anything his death will perk up the sale of blues albums a bit.

I guess it sucks that he died, but no more than it sucks for anybody else to die. I must admit there's the odd Gary Moore song that I don't mind (in both genres), however it sounds like he brought it on himself through alcohol abuse and for that reason I find it very hard to have sympathy. If you don't want to die, don't go on stupid drinking binges when you're 58, I would have thought that would have been a no-brainer...

Not true. Gary was a hard rock/metal player:

and then later on he was a blues player:

He never did both at once. Ever.

Good tribute done by good band, is good.
Bad tribute that is done by shitty band, that completely changes the song into something shitty, is shitty.
