So as Summer approaches festival season is almost upon us again, and I was wondering if any escapists are going to any? If so, where are you going and who are you excited about seeing? Also, what festivals have you been to before?

As for me, I'm currently incredibly excited for Glastonbury which starts 5 weeks today! I've been to Leeds festival three times before, but not for a while, and Glastonbury is meant to be about a million times better.

I'm one of the young whipper snappers who still attends Warped Tour each year. I'm pretty excited to see Chiodos back together, and they're getting some dubstep as well as metalcore acts, so hopefully that'll make things a bit more interesting this year.

I find it interesting that the Warped Tour is like a traveling festival. It's so different to how they all are in the UK. I knew there were a few different sites for it, but from the website it seems like it goes everywhere.

I guess that's more of a necessity seeing as the US is so enormous.

Yeah, if the festivals stayed in just the big cities and well established rural areas, then places like the Northwest shy of Washington would be screwed. Hell, they still are a lot of the time.

Been to download in 07 but that's it.

I think they are nothing but a waste of money to be honest. I can see an argument being made for the "atmosphere" but from my experience you get ripped off something fierce, sound quality is fucking awful, lugging your shit there and back is a pain in the arse, sweaty people everywhere, the "toilets" (especially on the last day).

I have also seen the embarrsing bodies episode where they went to a music festival, chances are you will get ill from something! The foot fungus, the STD's, the piss poor living conditions ... it's like living back in the medieval times.

I'll be going to the Houston Free Press Summer Fest on June 1st and 2nd. Mostly going for Arctic Monkeys but a few other bands are in the lineup that I'm excited for.

I might be going to a festival called Muskelrock(Muscle Rock) since some friends are going, but I really dislike festival areas(three days with neither showers nor private bathrooms!!1) and the line-up is secret so there's no way of knowing if any bands you wanna see is gonna play. Makes it feel unecessary. I can get drunk right here.

They frighten me, honestly. The press of people, the crowd itself, the filth. I wouldn't know how to act and behave.

Which sucks because my girlfriend linked me the Best Kept Secret Festival near Tilburg and good grief the Saturday line-up is good. But I'm probably too nervous and anxious to really enjoy the music, and the sound quality is probably rather poor anyway.

Luckily it turned out that I couldn't really afford it but still, I feel bummed out about myself for being scared.

I feel pretty differently about it. I think part of me just quite likes the squalor. A festival feels like a completely different world, people behave differently to how they do in their everyday lives. Now I appreciate this isn't always a good thing (there's always going to be some dickheads) but generally people are much more open, more ready to strike up conversation with complete strangers and just generally up for having a really good time. The "toilets" can be pretty grim, but if you just suck it up (not literally!) and get on with it they're hardly going to ruin your experience.

I've been to three festivals, and the only illness I've suffered is a terrible hangover. As with real life, as long as you take care of yourself you're going to be fine. Some idiots seem to go expecting the rules of real life to not exist, not using condoms etc.

On top of the atmosphere, which is really hard to describe to someone who hasn't been before, you also get to see a load of bands, which can be great value. Sometimes the sound quality can be a little patchy, but actually I've never experienced anything too bad before. Nothing that stopped me enjoying an act anyway.

I guess they aren't for everyone, but I've loved all of my festival experiences so far.

Shambhala! The most beautiful setting, the most beautiful people, the best music, the greatest festival around!

Download this year, Sonisphere 2011 but that's it. Sonisphere was awesome; got me into Biffy Clyro and Slipknot's stage show was pretty cool. Looking forward to QotSA this year :D

I think it depends on what music you go for. Download is a metal festival and when metal is blasted into an open air concert it turns into white noise ... I'm sure if you go to a more "dancey" festival the more simple musical score will not be effected.

I say that 'cos all pop/dance/trance/dubstep etc is just a pounding bass line with a simple melody over the top (sometimes the bass drops out, sometimes the melody drops out) for 4 minutes and the only thing that suffers is the vocals but a lot of those songs either have none or is just 3 or 4 phrases repeated.

I get what you're saying, but you come across a little ignorant of different types of music. Either way, Leeds festival does not have a primarily dance line up, headlining bands that played in years I attended include Rage Against the Machine, Arcade Fire, Radiohead, Arctic Monkeys, and Metallica, so what you're saying doesn't really affect my point.

I'm going to Spirefestival (http://spirefestival.wordpress.com/). I think I've been there every year. A perfect festival for people who don't necessarily likes festivals.

I'd say more arrogant than ignorant but that's not the topic.

Fair enough, that's just my bad ... I hear "music festival" and naturally assume creamfields type stuff.

This thread made me sad. Only because I am not going to any festival this year due to my funds being quite scarce.
Though to be honest the only festival that I would even consider a proper festival that i have been to was Glastonbury in 2010.
I honestly have to say its quite possibly the best experience of my life so far. I got to see some of the greats and some of my favourite bands and artists. Jack Johnson, The Editors, The Gorillas, Faithless, Mumford and Sons, and my personal favourites, Stevie Wonder and Muse.

I can't compare Glastonbury to Leed's as I have not been to Leeds festival, But if you like festivals you will love it no matter what bands or artists are there. Also I highly recommend spending a good bit of time exploring the Shangri la, Avalon Stage and Block 9 areas. They really a treat for the weird and wonderful.

I am going to the Mayhem Festival on June 29th. It has been brutally hot the last 3 years so I am bringing a friend with a RV this year so we can chill out in the A/C and have cold drinks between the bands we want to see. I wish there was an OZZfest this year in the US, I couldnt make it to Japan.

Well, we've missed the blues weekend, but did catch jazz fest.
I don't go to rock and metal festivals any more. I'm getting too old for that shit.

You put youtube.com, but youtube= is enough.

OT: I've only been to one festival and that was mostly because Rise against played there. I don't like that many bands that are playing on the festivals close enough to go to so I rarely go.
