What do you think are the best genres of music for gaming? I am a big fan of techno, trance, hard style and that sort of thing. It really gets me into a great state of mind to play. What do you listen to, if you listen to anything at all.

Drum 'n bass and metal most of the times for me. Best types of music while gaming imho, as killing hordes of zombies in L4D while listening to Rammstein always makes me smile.

I usually just listen to whatever the game's soundtrack has to offer. If someone took the time to make a soundtrack, then I'll take the game experience with the intended music.

Anything really funny and unfitting. Like incredibly epic orchestra music for Pikmin.

Techno for shooting games... Geometry wars, case in point.
Does anyone remember the music from Alien Trilogy? (ancient PS1/PC FPS) It had the most atmospheric minimal techno soundtrack ever, was truly beautiful, pretty sure I still have the soundtrack ripped on my hdd somewhere.

I'm a fan of rock and metal, but dear me is it used badly in games. Remember Prince of Persia: Warrior Within? Every time you were getting drawn into the atmosphere death vocals or power cords would rip you out of it and smash your head against the wall of anachronism.
