Zelda soundtracks, Pokemon, Mario osts, especially Mario Galaxy. Halo, Golden Sun, Metroid, even Kirby games. I love all of their soundtracks.

Also I think I'd actually have to disagree about the characters in FFXII as much as I like the game. Fran and Balthier were both great (Balthier especially) but virtually every other character in the game was a bit flat and uninteresting for my liking, especially Vaan who had about as much personality as a baked potato. I think unfortunately this nulls the story somewhat as well. You can get away with a fairly overused story as long as you have interesting characters (e.g. The Last of Us) but conversely having dull characters can make even the best story seem a little worse. It's a shame really as it's one of my favourite games of the PS2 age but I just can't find anything to like in all but two characters, if I could I think I would rank it even higher possibly up to the dizzying heights of Resi 4 (my favourite game of all time).
I agree, it's just that I hated pretty much all the FFX characters. Vaan just being there for no reason wasn't nearly as annoying as Tidus thus a baked potato is better than Tidus.

Well... I bought Skyrim's OST, which was mostly for "Dragonborn" and "One They Fear". It was actually kinda fun listening to each track and trying to think of where I would hear that in the game.

But if we're talking about best overall soundtracks, I'm going to go with Chrono Cross. Yup. Not Trigger, though it does have a fantastic soundtrack which I will remember until the day I die. Chrono Cross has the better soundtrack because, well, it just does. And, more importantly, the individual tracks can easily stand on their own. Part of why Trigger's music worked so well was because of how well they fit each scene.

I listen to a lot of VG music so I'll just mention the OST's that really stuck with me:

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: The Game - Anamanaguchi's mix of chiptune and rock was a serious breath of fresh air for me, along with the gorgeous pixel graphics, it was a game that just tugged at my nostalgia strings! Behold:

Rayman Origins - its a mix of melodic symphonies and just straight goofy happy tunes like this:

Guilty Gear X2 - its a nice heavy metal soundtrack, but the tune that made me buy the OST?
never before have I made a firm decision to main a character just based on their soundtrack.

Hotel Dusk's and its sequel Last Window's OSTs are absolutely fabulous. I listen to them all the time at work. They're low key jazz affairs, but quirky enough to stay interesting for repeated listens.

Also recently I've been listening to Trauma Team's OST. It's called Hospital if you buy it in Japan. Really, really great music. All kinds of styles and variety, but it never loses the pop angle. Well we all know Atlus knows good music.

My personal favorites are Shadow of the Colossus, Kingdom Hearts and Halo. I have to give a honorable mention to Persona 3 though.

I'm just going to echo the many votes for Shadow of the Colossus. It has such a unique blend of sadness and triumph in it's sound that captures the essence of the game perfectly. L.A. Noire and The Last of Us are also strong contenders for my favorite soundtrack.
