hmmm I was actually going to make a thread about how the new millennium hasn't had any iconic artists with which the decade will be known for. I me3an everyone can name great music from almost every other decade with ease, but I struggle to find GOOD music for which the new millennium stood for.

It's too bad that music nowadays is just so mediocre and bland. There are plenty of good bands and artists out there, but no great ones.

Some possible artists to represent to new millennium(for give me I'm trying): Eminem, Beyonce, Linkin Park, Queens of the Stone Age, Avenged Sevenfold, Slipknot

Please let me explain selections, which are not truly what I believe should represent this decade, but cut me some slack and think of the ones I forgot.

Eminem: he's an excellent white rapper who has influenced the industry
Beyonce: she's good and I'm assuming has won some awards
Linkin Park: not great musically on a technical note, but sort of represents that whole Nu-Metal scene and let's face it they are musically talented because they have been able to "succeed" with different genres and styles
QOTSA: sort of under the radar from the usual mainstream scene, but they're excellent and their style somewhat changed with each CD.
Avenged Sevenfold: let's face it, they're mainstream but it's not bad for mainstream. At least they're not Nickelback. They're almost like the Guns'N'Roses of our time.
Slipknot: not perfect but they do what they do well and there isn't much like them out there

Okay, please critique my suggestions but try not to rip them apart I'm no music guru but I feel that this is a good starting block to try to identify music with our decade.

It sounds like some people need a dose of Coheed and Cambria.

Coheed is a carbon copy of no band. Their concept alone makes them original, but their music is just outstanding.

Give them a listen. If you don't like them, then they're just not for you. They're a very acquired taste.

I realize that not many people(if any) will watch these videos. Do yourselves a favor and at least watch the first and last. If you're looking for some good, original music, this is a great place to start.

I liked the first one until the guy started singing. That kind of ruined it. And, I don't understand when you say "their concept alone makes them original."

People can piss and whine and moan about the state of music all they want, while continuing to seek the same sounds (but somehow better, if that's possible) that have been around for 50-60 years. Rock and country and the like will never die, but they've been around so long, done so completely to death, that the only way to stand out, to have a different sound, to not have anyone say "We heard this 20 years ago, GET ORIGINAL!" is to branch out into different territory, incorporate sounds and styles you may not agree with. But that isn't a reason to knock modern music. If you don't like the stuff coming out today, no one except the radio is forcing you to listen to it! Turn to the classic stations, if it's that big of a deal!

And, actually, that's kind of an interesting scenario in itself, these days. Now that the hits of the 90s are popping up on classic radio, it's getting interesting to look back with a certain fondness at the music that was coming out then, even stuff I had not really listened to at the time, maybe, even complained about! But nostalgia is POWERFUL. It'll be interesting to see in 20 years what music of today creeps into classic playlists, and how many of these same people complaining here will be going "damn, those were the days!"

Despite the misleading title, the stuff contained in this thread is the frontier of modern music. There's an amazing amount of power, feeling, and creativity left in music. An amazing range of sound and effect. And this is where it's at.

Or am I wrong? Will you show me some good music to make me smile, Escapists? Something with some heart and soul that came out in the last few years, that could be potentially as world changing as the greats?

Prove me wrong and I will be happy!
Basically what your saying is that music is in bad shape because you don't like it. What music you like is personal taste, no matter how much you want to say its not music.

Some might argue that Emo (I'm not really sure if this is the correct term for the genre) the sound of the 00's.

But tbh I think it is more to do with tastes, since this has also been a pretty good time for Rap and other non rock related music.

It's all about Megadeth and Johnny Cash my friends.
Followed by System of a Down, if they still made me music then I would hold them in higher regard, though I do think they were amazing.

That's the largest complaint when people first hear them. They just don't like Claudios voice, which is understandable. That's why I consider it an acquired taste. He's a natural falsetto and has ridiculous range.

They're a concept band. The singer/guitarist Claudio Sanchez has written a story and created an entire universe called the Amory Wars. He has a comic book series(and a prequel novel, with plans to novelize the whole series) based on the story and the songs follow the story of the characters and the events of that universe. So, their songs tell a story.

That first video was from a concert series called Neverender, in which, over 4 nights, they played their 4 albums(before the 5th was made) in order, song for song in the order they were on the album. If that isn't awesome, I don't know what is.

Well said, good man. You summed up my thoughts well, except that I was too lazy to write all that. I've said it before when this thread has popped up in the past.

About my thread: I'm really surprised how much the community knows about electronic music. I used techno, again because I'm lazy, not expecting nearly anyone to know the difference between terms. That really came and bit me in the ass.

Yeah, and in another 10-30 years, people will be saying that the 00s were the best decade in music and everything else was garbage. Listening to the radio usually gets you nowhere, unless you can find a station you actually like (101.1 WRIF). There's no point in me listening to a hip-hop/rap station then sounding off about the music industry if I don't like rap or hip-hop. I just move on and find other stations that I like.

OT: Meh. The next great musical age will come, just wait for it. I don't know when, but it'll be here sometime.

Here is a list of people, from pretty much every major contemporary genre (metal, rap, indie, electronica), who have had massive critical acclaim and a decent amount of commercial success.

Sigur Ros (and Jonsi)
Spoon
The National
OutKast (and Big Boi)
Animal Collective (and Panda Bear)
TV on the Radio
Radiohead
The Hold Steady
Wilco
Interpol
Modest Mouse
The xx
Joanna Newsom
Flaming Lips
Mastodon
Boris
Sunn O)))
Los Campesinos!
The Roots
Super Furry Animals
Amadou and Mariam
Dizzee Rascal
Battles
Flying Lotus
Janelle Monae
Low
Hercules and Love Affair
New Pornographers
Avalanches
Fucked Up
Arcade Fire
Franz Ferdinand
Anthony and the Johnsons
Godspeed You! Black Emperor
The Decemberists
The Streets
Madvillain
Tom Waits
Fuck Buttons
White Stripes
Sufjan Stevens
Burial
The Shins
LCD Soundsystem
Kanye West
Sage Francis
Aesop Rock
Caribou
Bon Iver
Iron and Wine
(I could go on but I think you get the idea)

All of them have put out albums that I would consider great, easily comparable to the best records of any other decade.
In fact, I think its been one of the most musically diverse decades we have had so far, with everything from Sunn O)))'s droning doom metal to the Hold Steady's hyper lyrical hard rock to classically influenced post-rock band's like Sigur Ros and beautifully intimate folk like Iron and Wine.
Furthermore, we have seen the underground breaking into the mainstream in a way that we haven't seen since Nirvana in the 90s. Heavy metal has become one of the best selling genres of music, indie has become massively popular as well, with bands like Vampire Weekend and the xx becoming massive commercial successes.

Heh, it's funny because it's true.

I would have mentioned them, but they were 90's.
I would have mentioned Rammstein also, but they started in the 90s too.

I like falsettos, like Boston and Queen, but only if they're extremely clean and precise.

Rock operas have been around forever, though. The Who made them all the time. The Beatles made movies out of some of theirs. Ludo made one. So I don't quite think that's going to make them original. But, if you like them, more power to you.
