I still catch The Headbangers Ball on MTV. Not as good as it used to be, I blame the current metal trends, but at least it's music.

For smaller bands, the bands themselves, and myspace. For larger bands I tend to rely on my friends, as they are more into the music scene as a whole, and they'll tell me if anything good is coming up.

VH1 Classic or whatever has good shit playing sometimes.

I'm ashamed to say I actually was introduced to one of my favorite bands through MTV.

Not sure exactly what your looking for, but myself i like http://www.exclaim.ca/
they got a dayly updated news section, plenty of album reviews of any genre, good interviews,
forthcoming album release date, tour dates ...etc.
they have a paper edition also(wich is free), but i dont think its available outside of canada.

I write a music review column for a local rag, mostly indie bands and local stuff. I know some of the local bands personally from going to their shows often enough, so I get that news from them directly. Otherwise, I just keep an ear to the ground. I talk to people who know people who rep for a band. I know a handful of small-time managers and bookers. The bookers actually know quite a bite, more than most people give them credit for. And they tell it straight unlike people in the band's camp who always try to paint a positive picture. I like firsthand sources more than relying on some website for my info.

The NME website (although their reviews/articles completely suck), and I generally hear about bands either through that or the music channels on Sky.

MTV has officially become a parody of itself.

it's like muchmusic in canada. they used to play all kinds of music from a fairly wide number of bands, only to be overtaken by shitty rappers, slutty pop stars, and downright horrendous "reality shows". i'm amazed people actually watch that garbage

The best music news i have heard recently is that Daft Punk is not only in production of a new album since last year, but they are composing the score for the Tron Movie Sequel. It is my assumption the new album will be the score.

I flipped when i heard this...Daft Punk are my GODS!!

I will occasionally check bands web pages, I would never use MTV or the slave of the media Rolling Stones magazine
