Do you listen to music while gaming, and if so, what?

I never listen to music when playing anything like an immersive RPG, or any potential story, unless I've done it before, but I always do during multiplayer.

What I listen to generally varies by the game I'm playing, I generally listen to a mix of classic rock and metal while playing shooters (Iron Maiden, Led Zeppelin, Rush, Beatles, Judas Priest)

During platformers and , I tend to lean towards alternative, grunge, and industrial (Jane's Addiction, Alice In Chains, Nine Inch Nails)

However, during RTS skirmishes, or when grinding in an RPG, I'll frequently listen to either Progressive or Indie (King Crimson, Tool, Sonic Youth, Pixies)

I listen to whatever's playing in the game.

Unless its a fighting game and all the music sucks.

I only listen to music when gaming if a story is absent or I need to grind for hours in an RPG.
When I do listen to music, I just leave it on my top rated songs on Shuffle. There's over two hundred songs there so it keeps me entertained.

Not really. But I do watch a lot of film while playing.

Recently I got a hold of the Black Adder box-set, so now I'm listening to Rowan Atkinson as I play AVP online (Seriously, the last time a demo had this much replay-value for me was when I got the Red Faction: Guerilla demo)

I do, but only in certain games. Fallout 3 for example. Oblivion was another. When I used to the Sims I would listen to music. It's only really in games that I don't deem the sound necessary. Playing WC3 online and at LANs in another example.

I listen to music while I'm playing racing sims or online shooters, usually a mixture of metal, techno and pop-rock.

Namely The Prodigy, Kings of Leon, Rise Against, Rage Against the Machine, Nirvana, occasionally The Beatles, and some Metallica thrown in for good measure.
I generally find I play better in shooters, and race more aggressively in racing sims depending on how aggressive the music is.

Always. The only exceptions are games that have music that I like and have that music running consistently for the whole game. Mass Effect 1 and 2 I played without external music.

Games I dislike the most are ones that have good music but only have it running for one or two minutes every once in a while. Be consistent please.

I'll usually have some J-Rock goin on usually as well as some other random stuff that I can't be asked to look at. But whenever I play RE4, I have to put in my James Bond CD...Cause playing as Leon makes me feel like a spy for some reason.

Hmm, rarely, unless it's a sandbox game or something, and exploring times are ahead.
Putting on a good cd and playing Spider man 2 for hours is awesome by the way.

When I played WoW I used to have films, TV, music anything other than the game sounds on once I'd heard it once I didn't care about hearing it again and DBM covered raid boss announces with visual queues so it was not essential to hear anything.

Other games though, I listen to whatever the game has to offer, unless it's got a mechanic that allows you to add MP3s to the game like GTA.

I'm not sure what made WoW so different, probably that you spend hours hearing the same little scores of music and it gets dull.

I find industrial or progressive metal music often is a good soundtrack for games set in a modern era. So if I'm playing Bioshock or Far Cry 2 I'll usually be listening to NiN, Fear Factory, Rammstein, Pink Floyd, Mastodon, etc. For Oblivion and the like I usually go for folk metal ,Korpiklaani, Ensiferum, In Extremo, Finntroll, stuff like that.

Yes, mainly in FPSes where I've heard the music before and it's boring. (Or where the music is completely gone.)

EDIT: Except for last weekend, the Daytona 500 was on so I listened to a radio of that.

I only really listen to music when I'm on TF2 for a few hours.
I'm making mini-playlists for each class to prove my nerdiness.
So far all I have is "Cotton-eye Joe" for the Engineer and "Bad case of loving you" for the Medic.

It depends, in RPG's or any other slow paced game I listen to coldplay or some other indie stuff. But if I'm playing an action game, which I usually play anyway, I have to listen something epic/crazy/hardcore like dragonforce or prodigy, or maybe even the soundtrack from another game, especially if the soundtrack for whatever I'm playing is shit like bayonetta... *shivers*
