Nah, I find listening to music breaks immersion. I mostly listen to music when I'm drawing, then it's inspirational and stimulates my creative juices and such.

Usually I'll go for some Omar Rodriguez Lopez, Aphex Twin, Torche, Sleep, Brian Eno. If I'm playing an RPG or a game with a neat story however, I'll leave it off.

If it is a fighting game, leveling up a character on a rpg, multiplayer, or anything monotonous I play music that is fast paced like techno, apocalyptica, metallica etc.

Most of the games I play are immersive enough that playing music would screw it up. I like to hear what's going on and audio cues are becoming more common in games now, so playing music may cause me to miss something.

I listened to She and Him a lot while trying to play Bioshock 1. I still got too freaked out and quit.

Used to listen to music or listen to cartoons when grinding for gold in WoW. Never listened to music during raids. Now that I don't play WoW anymore, I need my ears in game, playing Left 4 Dead, Counter Strike, Call of Duty. I don't listen to music when playing single player games either, I feel that it ruins the atmosphere the game is creating. Only in racing games do I listen to music, because that's what they supply, and besides, I listen to music when I'm really driving anyway.

What ever I am in the mood for at the time, sometimes Nine Inch Nails, Sometimes Judas Priest, Sometimes Electric Wizard, and so on.

Only when I'm at a really frustrating moment in a game and I'm starting to lose my cool. The music soothes me and helps me focus more on the game. As for the music I listen to. A mixture of metal, rock, indie and a few japanese songs, love flow and Access, Aqua Timez is awesome as well.

Most games I play have a decent enough soundtrack that I just won't get in its way. Especially if I'm playing StarCraft or something- I can never get enough of the Terran soundtrack.

But when I do, its usually a mix of old Moetown R&B and Funk music.
You have not played Portal until you've played it listening to the likes of Soul Finger and K-Jee

I'll listen to music when I'm playing MW2, and that's about it.

I've played it with everything from The Smiths to Daft Punk to Between the Buried and Me.

Beck or Rush, if it's a laid-back RPG, but if I'm spilling copious amounts of digital blood, it's Black Dahlia Murder all the way.

For the most part I find trying to listen to music that isn't part of the game itself too distracting. The only exception to this is X3, when I'm playing that I'll turn the game music off and listen to a mix of podcasts and standup comedy to help pass the time.
