or an Elder Scrolls game, I'm having power metal blasting.
lolwut? Elder Scrolls is a relaxing easy experience most of the time. That just sounds like it would be incredibly dissonant. What say you?

OP: It really depends on the game. First thing to note is: Is the game soundtrack good? If so, have I listened to it 5 billion times? If the first and second questions answer is yes and no respectively, I'll listen to the game soundtrack. If not, I'll choose songs based on the kind of game it is.

Play League, instalock J4 or Vi, load up every single Space Jam remix ever, win game.

GET DUNKED

For a little bit slower burning Champions I start each game with this:

It paces itself kind of slowly until it hits around 7 minutes, hopefully by then Hecarim has hit full level 6 riding potential

I played this for hours while playing Rainbow Six: Vegas. I don't know why I guess the song just highlights...something while I'm playing. The fast pace, the singing. Of course when you're listening to this you almost just think of fights taking place in close quarters public areas turned makeshift battlefields.

EDIT: Ah jeez it's a slideshow vid. Thought it was just the music : /

I usually listen to a lot of Aesthesys while playing strategy games like Civ.
When playing Doom and Doom-like games I listen to a lot of Death Metal, Thrash Metal and Techno.

And for more modern FPSs I listen to gangster rap, jazz or reggae.
Been listening to a lot of Lee Perry and The Toyes recently while playing through Halo Reach again.
The above song was also in GTA V :D

Depends on the game I'm playing. The more grindy games, once I've played for 50/100+ hours I'll start to have something else on in the background. When I was playing Torchlight 2 it was great for getting into new albums I hadn't listened to properly and investigating some band's back catalogues. Torchlight 2 and Enslaved are now intertwined in my head. WoW back in the day was also a definite for having music on whilst playing.

I'd also quite often have some music on when playing Civ4 - I tended to play on Marathon so a single game could last 20+ hours.. yeah I'll have some non-game music on for variety! Actually I also found that good documentaries on BBC iPlayer were a great accompaniment to Civ. Have the history of famous figures on whilst you're either playing as them, or smashing them into the dirt. These same style documentaries often give me a hankering to play Civ if I'm not already doing so, actually.

Otherwise, I tend to go with the game's own intended soundtrack.

Metallica goes well with Twisted Metal, especially Kill 'em All. There's nothing like making your enemies explode with delicious amounts of dakka while hearing Hit the Lights in the background.

On that note, just about any thrash metal band/song goes will with playing Super Smash Bros. Brawl with my comrades.

The game devs worked hard to put in a soundtrack they think matched the mood of the game, might as well give them the benefit of listening to it.
Well I sat through all of Dark Souls' non boss related OST for 1 1/2 years now and let me tell yah: No music at all gets pretty dull after awhile.
Or in other words OSTs can end up really short/after awhile get boring when played long enough/bad (games like Revengeance, Persona, ect. being exceptions, playing games like those without the OST should be a sin).

So I listen to either OC Remixes

and just so I can bring up Souls again, remixes that enhance the original tracks. For the better...

Whats it called "Aesthesys"? I love the melody, very soothing and something I can get into. Got some new tracks to listen to now, thanks.

I don't usually listen to music while I game, but I found myself gravitating towards AC/DC's Shoot to Thrill while playing as a Demon Hunter in Diablo 3.

If you've played as a Demon Hunter, you probably understand why they go so well together.

Depends on the game for me.

Hack and slash games it's Amon Amarth

Shooters and puzzles on the other hand get Extreme Metal bands like Children of Bodom or Kalmah or ETOS

The first thing I do when I get a new game is turn the music volume all the way to 0 in the sound options.

(I know some people turn the subtitles on, but honestly those people are crazy)
Mostly so I can hear the dialog in cutscenes and other scenes but also so I can still hear the ambient sounds while I listen to my own music.

I just listen to my playlist for any game. It's got like 900 songs or something in it so match specific songs to specific games.

But! for games that are mostly grinding like Minecraft (Not grind, but you know what I mean), Borderlands 2 or any number of JRPG's that I play I'll listen to podcasts while I'm playing in stead of music. a whole 2 birds 1 stone situation there.

I don't really listen to music while I'm gaming outside of maybe when I'm going through a scary level or something to keep my anxiety levels from getting too high to even continue playing. Before, it was something along the lines of just playing a BackStreetBoys CD just until I beat the boss on that one particular level and then I turn the volume on the game back to normal, now, I can just do with the game's music helping to create the tense atmosphere.

I mostly listen to Dubstep and Drum & Bass while I'm healing on an MMO, but for general gameplay on a game that doesn't have a decent soundtrack already, its Metal, like Five Finger Death Punch and Iron Maiden.

Only really listen to music while playing MMOs, so GW2 nowadays, WoW before. And nowadays it's usually stuff like Dr. Peacock, hard ass bass!

Well, I changed my Tank music to this in L4D2:

It's perfect. It even starts at the epic parts. I may be imagining it, but seemingly, it alternates between starting at the first outburst, and the latter outburst. This music just screams "BIG MONSTERS".

Lot's of example's so I keep it short as possible and in spoiler tags since there are YT video's.

Here's an example when I'm playing Borderlands 2 as the Mechromancer:
When I'm playing as the Psycho:
And when playing as the assassin:
When playing Carmageddon however it's more like this:

As you see it highly depends on the game and in some cases the character I play as.

Alice in Chains, Metallica and Megadeth with MMO's.
Roachford, Mastodon and Reverend Horton Heat with everything else.

And yes, I do suffer from identity issues.

If Im just tanking/vehicle whoring it up in BF3 (now BF4) I'll usually crank up the Red fang or some similar stoner/sludge metal.

Skyrim I run a combination of the various Witcher + LOTR film soundtracks.

Anything grindy or mindless I'll just chuck on whatever I'm in the mood for.

There's actually a bunch of stuff I used to listen to back when WoW first released that gives me massive nostalgia hits. Mostly a lot of industrial Alt-rock stuff that was all the rage back at the time. I must have listened to 30 seconds to Mars' very first album like a hundred times for no particular reason when I was leveling my first Night Elf toon. Really different from their subsequent releases which ended up being a lot more mainstream.

Also listened to a ton of Eluveitie during my hardcore Warhammer Online PvP days. Fond memories clutch healing on my Runepriest :)

I mostly play League of Legends at the moment, don't have much time for anything else. While playing I listen to:
1. Indie Rock/Alt Rock/Pop Punk
2. UK House/Future Garage/Chillwave, pretty much songs such as the ones you can find on a Youtube channel called TheSoundYouNeed.
For some reason I play a lot better when listening to the second genres.
Back when I was playing WoW I used to listen to a lot of Disturbed/System of a Down/Avenged Sevenfold a bit of Cradle of Filth, Amon Amarth, Sabaton. I still do sometimes, but quite rarely.
