I can't tell what this is.

Is this like a Militant Muslim dictatorship owned thing to block games in such counrities, or is this just the Muslim equilavant of a religious ESRB?

Either way, I'm getting some popcorn and watching the fireworks on this one.

Actually, those of us on the Cross side of things who know a thing or two about our own beliefs realize that the two are very similar, and I'm led to believe that the same is true for those on the Crescent side. Jesus Christ is an important prophet in Islam, and Mohammed preached many of the same values that Christians hold as their own. This is the super-simplified version of the creation of Christianity and Islam

God: *create universe*

Mankind: *mess it up*

Jesus: *respawn in 3...*

Christians: PHWOAR

Mohammed: I HAVE SEEN THE LIGHT!

Some Christians (now Muslims): omfg u r winnar

Other Christians: lol fail u noob

There are more but I can't be bothered. Christians have been doing this since the media came to prominence. That a religion that claims under its auspices over a billion people is acknowledging a component of modernity is progress, even if we as gamers may ultimately disagree with the results.

As an aside, I liked "Jesus in Space" better when it was called Mass Effect.

i didnt look at all the sites just the last one,

that has got to be a troll site, i couldent stop laughing while reading the reviews!

Not related, but why no more Hypnotoad?

OT: Hm. I don't think this will end well. While it gives another culture the chance to rate games on their own system of right and wrong, I can only see this as creating more conflict and confusion....

Poe's Law. I remember people actually saying that Bully promotes homosexuality, even if that last one is a troll site, its an argument that has appeared in Christian Media.

No different than Christian groups measuring content in games. Don't see the issue.
I'm going to go with this, because Muslims are the latest thing to hate on people are going to add this to their lists as another reason to hate on them.

Yet another example of religion being barking mad and continuing a long tradition of coercion and censorship.

I get the same vibe. Thankfully the ESRB, unlike the ESRA(curious similarity there), is non-denominational.
But let us don't forget that California is on the precipice on being the same way, which if that law is upheld will only create an avalanche through other states...12 at least.
This does make me think that the hardline Muslim states like Iran, are what the hardline Christians want to turn their countries into. Oh joy.

But I'm worried that the ESRA could be the start of a worrisome trend. While the U.S has a tradition of respecting free speech, there is no equivalent to the First Amendment in many Islamic nations. Laws could be enacted in Middle Eastern countries which forbid the sale of games which are rated poorly by the ESRA. I'm also not sure that it's a good idea to have a videogame rating system based on each and every race or creed in the known world as it could quickly become confusing and needlessly complicated. "Well, the ESRB gave Mass Effect 3 an M for Mature, the ESRA gave it a WP for Western Propaganda, and the Communist Ratings Board gave it a CaP for Capitalist Pigdogs! What's a parent to do?"
Yeah, let's open the floodgates, so that other groups whose members are all mentally unstable lunatics can have a shot at this. PETA: "there are bugs in this game that the developers are trying to kill, not suitable for anybody!" NRA: "the exit velocity of the bullet in the M4 rifle is 4m/s slower than in real life, not suitable for anybody!" KKK: yeah...not doing that.
*sigh* religious people...funny until you remember they are real...
KKK would approve if Ashley's still alive, and from all the Renegade options from ME1.

True, but I was specifically talking about Muslims and Christians. We could go on and include Protestants/Catholics, Shiite/Sunni, Scientologists/Not Batshit Crazy People, and so on.

Hmm...

On one hand, they have every right to do that. I mean there are some Christian-based websites out there right now that are designed to let parents know if a given game is appropriate for their children, and some of those are really great for parents that want to be careful what they let their kids play, regardless of their faith. I imagine this would be the same for Muslims, and they have every right to help determine how a given game lines up with their values.

However, the concerns expressed in the original news post are definitely valid. While I do think Muslims have the right to determine how appropriate a game is for their beliefs and values, making it the official rating system could cause problems, especially considering the lack of free speech protection games would have.

Interesting news, for sure.

Why should a religion be entitled to this kind of special treatment? It's just a philosophical choice, nothing more. I really hope that no developer takes this seriously because it's pretty laughable how any religion thinks it's automatically right just because people believe in it. There's nothing in any religion that makes it more right than another, and even the complete lack of religion and/or a belief in a deity/deities (atheism) isn't morally right or wrong either, since the entire concept is subjective anyway. Hell, (sorry Godwins law haters out there) Hitler didn't do anything immoral according to his beliefs, if he thought at any point that what he was doing was the wrong thing to do then he'd stop doing it, but he was doing what he thought was right and as far as he's concerned, it was.

Just because someone says that something is a "value" doesn't mean it's useful, true or even relevant. This is a joke and I hope it's ignored for the sake of sanity.

The stupid ones, maybe.

If you're a Jew, Christian or Muslim then you should know how closely related your religions are to one another.

Oh, and I don't get why people think this is going to affect us in any way. The Middle Eastern countries that don't have free speech (or that thing we claim is free speech but really isn't but nevermind) won't allow the games anyway, and Muslims who do only want to play that sort of game in the Western world can use it as a guide line.

Everyone seems to be forgetting that the people in the States who most commonly condemn games are Christians; at least here they're not just trying to ban them outright.

And if anyone thinks that's offensive... then I really don't care. I am against Islam itself. The people I can deal with.
I am soooooo going to quote that in everyday conversation. Although, I think it would be better spelled as "Muslims gonna Muz". Just a thought.

OT: I think this is going to filter out just about every game ever made. Except maybe Bejewled, although I wouldn't be surprised if they found a reason to censor that one too.
